How are people even affording holidays? It seems mad. I've cut back on all luxuries.

ToastedWaffle · 08/07/2022 20:40

I'm.a single parent with two primary aged kids. Just been informed they will be putting breakfast and after school club fees up in september. And this shit show on top. Genuine question, what would happen if we all cancelled our direct debits to the energy companies? I feel sick I cant afford these hikes.

You'd accrue debt and get put on a more expensive prepay meter, with debt automatically deducted when you top up.

Time to put electricity, gas and water back into public ownership. Simple as that.

We should all stop paying these ridiculous bills as a protest and force government to do something about it.

Other countries like France have managed to keep cost down. We need to stop letting corporate companies make profit out of people's misery...

If you see Sid, tell him.

40 years of Thatcherism finally coming home to roost. Everything is going to shit.

Neverendingdust · 08/07/2022 21:16

The deaths will shoot through the roof, suicide rates will increase, small businesses will simply fail and a large majority will be very miserable and cold. It’s an absolute disgrace how far we are falling behind. Where is the hope of secure futures for those who were struggling already? Millions are going to be left behind.

Good luck to the next PM, talk about a poisoned chalice.

And I've never known so much chat from my friends about money worries, and these are generally professional couples who are both in work and are on decent salaries.

People are going to freeze to death, starve, or just kill themselves due to the stress. In 2022. While there's so much money floating around the world. It's bonkers and terrifying.

And the rich get richer.

Lemonsqueezy22 · 08/07/2022 21:22

It’s very worrying. I am a single parent to a 12 year old. I work but am struggling and it’s getting worse each week. Petrol to get to work and child to school is costing me £80 a week. If petrol goes up anymore I literally won’t be able to afford to run my car which then puts my in a predicament of getting my child to school etc

We have cut back on so much there is nothing more to cut back on really. I was talking about cutting back on Netflix today and just having the free apps like itv hub (we don’t have a tv license because of the cost so don’t have normal channels). I have also cut back on food by only having 1/2 meals a day myself with no snacks either. If the energy prices do rise with what has been predicted then I honestly don’t know what we will do.
Upsets me to think pensioners are also having this problem as they should be able to enjoy a little bit of heating in the winter without worrying.

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2022 21:24

There isn't even a functioning government in charge to moan about , just a squatter , Peter bone and a leader ship contest !
Yet we all put up with it .

motogirl · 08/07/2022 21:25

They said that in March but mine hasn't actually increased - not sure how much is scaremongering

You do understand that the price cap went up in April and it will be going up in October.

It's not a figment of someone's imagination

Well the rates and standing charges must have increased, surely? And you will see that increase in winter. Last month my g+e was £77. Higher than this time last year. In October/November i dread to think what itll be.

If we all did it en masse, I think it would create such a monumental headache that something give. Everyone just refuse to pay. 1 person does it and gets penalised. Millions of people do it and ....

The strange thing is they were so keen to lock the country down to save the lives of the elderly and vulnerable. But now they are happy for them to freeze and starve to death.

Makes me think it was all about finding an excuse for money printing in a last ditch attempt to save a collapsing financial system......🤔

The financial system collapsed in 2008, it's been artificially kept up since, starting with the bail out of the bank. The top 1% have got a lot richer again during the pandemic. I think we've finally moved on from Capitalism to an Oligarchy without any pretence behind it now.

User135644 · 08/07/2022 21:36

We need some sort of longer term plan. The nationalisation of utilities and laws/ /grants to get all homes fully insulated.

Ed Miliband called for this in an election campaign. Jeremy Corbyn did. But the Tories and their henchmen in the press wouldn't have it.

Squiff70 · 08/07/2022 21:43

I echo the sentiments shared throughout this thread - it's an utter nightmare for millions of people and soon to become an utter nightmare for many millions more.

We live in a 2 bed semi and have a toddler with additional needs plus a baby due next month. When Winter hits our baby will only be a couple of months old so we can't shirk on the heating for either of our children.

There are things we can still cut back on but why the bloody hell should ANY of us working parents (or those unable to work) cut back to the absolute bones when the energy companies are making so much profit? Same with fuel - BP said recently they're making so much profit they literally don't know what to do with it all. How the fuck does that even happen?

£9 for Lurpak - not essential when there are cheaper alternatives but what the FUCK???

I am outraged by this. I follow Money Saving Expert and Martin Lewis on Twitter. Martin is beside himself with worry on the behalf of the British public, and rightly so. Every time I see one of his posts I get another punch to the gut.

DP proposed to me in February. We were also hoping to buy a slightly bigger house in a different area. We cannot now afford to save for either a wedding or a house (I know that's insignificant when so many can't afford to feed their families or heat their homes so I'm not feeling too hard done by) but we DID have enough income to save for those luxuries but now we have no chance and are cutting back more and more. Somebody asked me how the wedding plans are coming along the other day. I felt so sad explaining and so so many people are in a far worse situation than we are. It's dire.

fghj149 · 08/07/2022 21:44

This is insane..no idea how we’re going to cope in my house anyway

Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase · 08/07/2022 21:50

Well the Tory party aren’t in any hurry to do anything about this. I can’t believe that Richie is putting himself forward in the leadership contest. The nerve of that man 😡

Just remember this when we have the next election and punish them at the ballot box

I've already cancelled mine. Just do it. I read the meters monthly now and I'm paying quarterly. Usage is down 35% on last year and my bill is up from £90 to £180 a month.

That's with no heating on.

So basically, we won't be in poverty this winter, we will just be fucking cold - because £200 a month is the absolutely most I can afford to spend.

My normal monthly direct debit last year across the 12 months was £150.

Excited101 · 08/07/2022 20:01

This makes no sense. It cannot be the case, people will just die 🤷‍♀️

Have people had their heads in the sand or what? This is not news. Martin has been sounding the alarm about this for months. People need to start getting angry that the government aren't preparing for this

ToastedWaffle · 08/07/2022 22:00

It's like a dystopian nightmare we're all trapped in.

OP posts:
Wheati · 08/07/2022 22:01

We feel the same I completely sympathise. I'm hoping the government will have a plan In place for the winter as surely noone will be spending?

Our family for example. My dh finally found his feet with a job paying above minimum wage and the new wage increase has gone into the food/gas / elecy increases when we had hoped for it to go into a better future, lifestyle and maybe towards a longer than our once a year 5 day camping holiday.

I normally buy second hand for the kids clothes / toys for birthdays but my usually places to go - marketplace, charity, ebay etc are either depleted or charging extortionate amounts. So we're just going without. Same for days out, trips and spftplays these have all been cut back in favour for walking distance parks and beaches with picnics. Will this not have an effect on the economy? I'm incredibly worried for the future and what it might look like.

The quoted figures fornthe october price cap was initially around 46% then 51%. But 64% is really taking the piss. Something needs to happen

I must admit I thought it was a lot of scaremongering until I received an email today from my energy company. Currently paying £144 a month for gas and electric combined - they said they are increasing it to £503 per month. Absolutely gobsmacked by this!

plugee · 08/07/2022 22:07

I'm started to think this

SunflowerGardens · 08/07/2022 22:08

'Same with fuel - BP said recently they're making so much profit they literally don't know what to do with it all. How the fuck does that even happen?'

The Tories enable it with their policies because they have shares in the energy companies. The fuckers are coming on telly and making sympathetic faces to the rest of us then laughing all the way to the bank.
