@justasking111

"We only bought four percent of our gas from Russia. So puzzled by the shortage excuse. "

+++

Because nat gas is a global commodity so although Russian gas accounts for only 4% of UK gas imports, it accounts for 65% of German gas imports. So if Russian supplies are interrupted then Germany will try and buy more gas from Norway or LNG via the UK and this in turn pushes up the price of Nat gas the UK pays for Norwegian or LNG and so on.

Plus the price for long term nat gas contracts is often indexed to oil prices and the embargo on Russian oil has pushed up the price of oil and thus the price of nat gas.

I can’t understand what’s going to happen. We’re never going to do what France has done are we? We’re all fucked. I feel sick, and frustrated because I’ve worked so hard for a promotion and literally all my extra wage is going to go straight into the cost of fucking living crisis. I know that’s ultimate first world problems but it’s so hard when you can’t get on however hard you work because of world governments fucking our economy all the time. It’s just so unfair.

Never vote Tory. That will help, long term.

Hrpuffnstuff1 · 08/07/2022 23:20

I'm perplexed as to why people are paying so much.😬🙄
What the chuff are you using energy on in summer.
I wouldn't be surprised to see the energy companies doing this to nudge peoples energy consumption.

fatfrenchprick · 08/07/2022 23:21

I have storage heaters and my house is only electric. God help us all

PatchworkElmer · 08/07/2022 23:21

I’m so worried about this. We’ve got decent jobs but I think we’ll have to look at just hearing 2 bedrooms in winter. Can’t imagine how awful it will be for vulnerable people.

ThisIsNotThePostYourLookingFor · 08/07/2022 23:22

Remember this at the next general
election!

justasking111 · 08/07/2022 23:22

@1dayatatime thanks for explaining that.

From May 1 house coal was banned I recall reading, so that's bad timing for many

Diverseopinions · 08/07/2022 23:24

The Conservative Party will be out of power because of this crisis. Re-nationalising energy under a Labour government will be what will happen. There will be a solution which requires a massive amount of state intervention and some methods which I can't foreshadow or imagine, but somebody will be able to think of something.

This is a crisis which is affecting professionals, who usually just about manage to survive, and petrol price increases will hit self-employed trades people and business owners who need to drive. I think there will be a massive political change affecting how people think about their political loyalties and the rationale for free enterprise and a small state. People are going to compare themselves with families living generations ago and realise we've been conned, working all hours and ending up with a meagre standard of living. I think the whole mantra of 'work hard and make your own success' will fail.

We're on British Gas variable as our old supplier went under. Just looked on their website and there are no deals/fixed tariffs available at all. It says don't ring customer services as they don't have anything else to offer.

I'm in a similar position, moved to BG after our supplier went bust. I did managed to fix on a 12 month deal around mid June. We're paying more now but will hopefully be less in October. Keep checking they may put some other offers on soon as I know there originally was a May deal that I missed out on but then a new one appeared in June.

Two five minute showers a bit of washing up water is a £1 a day. Then you've leccy for everything else. Wonder how much it will cost to charge the car this winter??

daisybrown37 · 08/07/2022 23:29

We are lucky, we can pay it, but the savings will go down. So spending will be less, no holidays or non essential purchases.

however, I appreciate we don’t have to choose between heat and food.

whynotwhatknot · 08/07/2022 23:29

its just unbelievable isnt it feel llike we're in some sort of war time film-unfortunatly my father is a tory always has been hes still excusing boris-i said what are yu going to do when it goes up-oh just pay it

thanks that helps

justasking111 · 08/07/2022 23:31

We've never heated the bedroom but have a huge comforter over the duvet in the winter. I bought mine from Macy's in the sale they are very heavy and keep you warm. Bedsocks from Primark and fluffy pyjamas and dressing gown plus proper sheepskin slippers.

Rugs on the sofa are a must for me.

I guess people are paying an 'average' monthly DD to even out over the year. Of course, it's 5 months till December and 3 months till an increased price cap in October - when demand for energy is higher.

whynotwhatknot · 08/07/2022 23:34

ive just checked offers and they want to double the price to put me on a fixed tariff well its going to do that anyway isnt it

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 08/07/2022 23:38

That is crazy but things the same here in Ireland, has gone up 3 times already in 10 mths or so and gas going up nearly 40 percent and electricity 12 percent and will likely be another rise before Christmas, I could not afford the gas bill last jan so cannot imagine what it will be like then, will not be putting heating on but getting cosy warm blankets and thank god never liked heating on in bedroom, and I do not usually feel the cold and the stuffy heat affect my sinus. Just shocking that our governments are not doing more as these companies are making millions of profits yearly. Sick of it all really as food shopping gone up so much and not much left when pay everything. Feel so sorry for older people who will not have heat or who will not eat properly.

PotatoFamily · 08/07/2022 23:40

I grew up in a house where my mum couldn’t afford the heating. It was miserable.
I’m so looking forward to this winter 😩

justasking111 · 08/07/2022 23:42

My USA friend bought me my first bedspread. I was hooked. So cosy Macy's have a big sale until 13th. I buy cotton fabric it washes well. Bit of a beast to dry

I'd like to add that I haven't changed my direct debit for gas/electricity. It was £90 a month combined before "all this". Ovo wanted me to increase my DD to £300. I refused. I'm a single parent/carer to a disabled child reliant on benefit income (hopefully only until September but that's another matter). Instead I decided to change our usage. I bought a combined halogen oven/air fryer, stopped using my range cooker, heating on for an hour a day (not now obviously but during winter), turned boiler right down, stopped using tumbler, cold wash as much as possible, lights off, stopped leaving things plugged in or on standby, bought Primark oodies and fluffy slippers etc etc. My bill has increased by 22 a month. I put in monthly readings on the dot and pay for what I use. I am not sure why more people are not doing this and are just accepting massively increased direct debits. Admittedly it was much easier for us to cut back as there are just two of us but I will not pay an unnecessarily massive direct debit to line the pockets of suppliers. Had I increased my direct debit to £300, I'd be in credit to the tune of £1,100. It's not necessary.

How can it be possible that my minuscule <70sqm house is apparently going to cost me over £5000 to power in the next year? It is complete and utter insanity!!!

That’s just under double how much my mortgage will cost me in the same timeframe.

I can’t wrap my head around this. What’s a measly £400 going to do to help?! People will die.

Blow that, pay for what you use.
Still think some of this usage is excessive.

Someone mentioned self employed. Business owners can offset costs via their expenses. So we get tax relief on all our bills.

If you are doing monthly readings and paying for what you use, doesn't that mean that when winter arrives, you will be using a lot more and paying 'as you go' for energy used in those expensive months.

I am paying monthly for energy that I use and I know that I will have much more expensive bills over the winter months.

I should have made clear that I started this regime after the October increase. Of course given the predicted rises, it means my bill will increase again but it will still be a manageable increase. I am already planning and preparing for a no heating winter (and praying for a mild one!). My point was that with my usage savings my bill has increased by only £22. Yet my energy supplier wanted £300 which I simply couldn't have afforded on my very limited budget. I am annoyed with myself that I didn't take these measures before as I would have saved an absolute fortune.

I am guessing people just won’t use their heating in winter. So their bills won’t increase as their usage won’t change. This is what we will have to do - family of 4 including 2 disabled people. We will get the help from the government but with these increases we just won’t be able to use our heating at all. The cost of living in general including petrol is crippling us.
