To reduce the number of showers I have each week

Let's be honest here. During lockdown probably most of us that worked from home rolled out of bed to their laptop and started the work day (in pjs)

I believe my need for showers daily took a nose dive. Don't get me wrong I went old school and did a daily clean with a flannel and yes still brush my teeth twice a day. I was showering twice a week.

Now back into the swing of things, working face to face (twice a week) I find my routine has stayed the same and the need for daily showers has gone. Obviously if I go work out I will do but I'm talking daily no.

What's other people's experience? Has everyone resumed normal life or are there people out there like me who are now content doing a flannel wash instead of a daily shower????

I am waiting for the gross comments but honestly I don't feel worse for it and my water bill has dropped!

I have to in the summer, otherwise I stink. I use really strong deodorant and barely make it until the end of the work day .

RoseMartha · 07/07/2022 20:08

I will either have an old fashioned strip wash at the sink in the bathroom. Which takes me less time than a shower. Or I shower, and now and then treat myself to a soak in the bath. Depends how much time I have and how much hot water there is.

ConfusedParticle · 07/07/2022 20:09

I wouldn't ask this on MN, a shit show of competitive showering habits is sure to erupt!

ConfusedParticle · 07/07/2022 20:10

Saying that, I never take a bath or shower. It saves so much money. I just wait for an impromptu rainfall and stand naked in the garden with a bottle of bodyshop rose gel and a sponge.

CallOnMe · 07/07/2022 20:11

It takes me at least 3/4 days to start smelling without washing so I can easily see how you can shower the amount you do.

I don’t think it does your body any good washing every day but I try to work out most days so I’ll often jump in for literally 1/2minutes just to wash the sweat off. If I don’t work out then I don’t bother.

But I properly shower and wash my hair every 2/3 days. Usually every other day.

Tabbouleh · 07/07/2022 20:13

Why is it not good for your body to wash daily? Always bemused by this.

Cuppa2sugars · 07/07/2022 20:14

i have a quirky house where it’s an effort to get to the shower ! so i’ll shower every other day or leave it max 3 days. my skin is better for it anyways.

^ this. I don't believe half the amount of people who say they shower every day. It's a bit like when you do you wash you bedding, every one usually days 2-3 times a week but we all know it's lies! Grin

I actually do have a daily shower, and didn’t stop during lock down. I don’t wash my bed sheets that often though.

moneyortime · 07/07/2022 20:15

I frequently have a 60 second shower. So much quicker and less messy than a sink wash, surely? I only ever spend 10 minutes in the shower if I'm washing my hair. I frequently wash twice a day but very quickly.

moneyortime · 07/07/2022 20:17

Also - the less you shower, the more often your clothes need a wash so it a false economy. Stale sweat rubs onto clothes and THAT is the thing that actually smells

CockysGirl · 07/07/2022 20:18

I shower virtually every day (sometimes miss a Sunday if having a duvet day!) otherwise I feel smelly. My OH only showers twice a week and doesn't smell. So basically I think it depends on whether you need to or not.

Coughee · 07/07/2022 20:18

I'm an every day showerer but I work out most days and I SWEAT. I went to the gym tonight and didn't even do cardio but my hair was plastered to my head by the time I came out! My skin gets quite dry so I'm sure it would be better if I didn't but I - personally - would probably stink. I don't believe that's true for everyone though.

Apparently it's because it's too drying (moisturiser hasn't hit the UK yet). People Ik other countries seem to fare just fine. Anyway, most people don't stink after 2 days, maybe 3, but if you smell your pits and bits they probably will a bit.

Sillyotter · 07/07/2022 20:20

I shower every other day and just do a top up wash of the essentials inbetween if needed. My skin couldn’t cope with daily showers

I can't believe you don't just grab a handful of privet or laurel & lather that into a soap, so unnecessary using something out of a bottle!

YouOKHun · 07/07/2022 20:23

I shower every day but since lockdown I’ve stopped washing my hair every day and I don’t wear make up much. I’ve cut my shower down to under a minute if I’m not washing my hair. I’m desperately trying to cut costs in any way I can which is the main reason for dispensing with lengthy showers, products and hairdryers etc. in the autumn when the prices of E&G go up I’ll probably be having a once weekly bath!

Surely it depends on your skin type. Mine is oily.

Scianel · 07/07/2022 20:24

Can someone explain to me in detail how a strip wash or flannel wash actually works? Is it just poking a damp flannel at your crack? If you put soap on it, how do you get it all rinsed off again?

I shower twice a day but that said its a detachable shower so often just undercarriage etc.
Like some PPs I always wash after a poo. I'd feel really gross if I didn't.

BreadInCaptivity · 07/07/2022 20:28

One for the pearl clutchers....

I've never showered daily. Only weekly.

I suffer from eczema and it drys out my skin terribly.

I am also not "immune" to my own smell.

I wash daily the old fashioned way with two clean flannels (one to remove dirt and another to clean) and then moisturise my skin.

My hair is washed weekly (it doesn't get oily).

DH showers daily and would have no hesitation in pointing out if I was smelly.

Merryclaire · 07/07/2022 20:30

I have a quick shower every day as I love the feeling of being fresh and awake.

But I only wash my hair 2-3 times a week, and clothes when they need it - which is more during the summer months.

I’m surprised so many people think people who shower every day are lying - it’s just normal to me. Though I can imagine a lot of people could get away with every second day.

If you want to hear something really gross, my FIL recently admitted he only brushes his teeth a couple of times a week!

mumda · 07/07/2022 20:30

Those energy bills are going to cut back on people showering?

user1487194234 · 07/07/2022 20:31

I shower every day and often twice a day if I do a lot of exercise or if it’s very hot
just wouldn’t feel clean earlier

How much does a warm shower cost, 3 mins long from a combi boiler?

courgettigreensadwater · 07/07/2022 20:34

I shower and wash my hair every day 🤦🏻‍♀️ I have to have a shower when I get up as I literally do not feel awake otherwise and I also do 30-60 seconds of freezing cold at the end. I've tried lots of times not to wash my hair every day but have realised at 45 I can't cope with the not clean feeling as I get greasy roots by the next morning.

It's so weird how the "1+ a day otherwise it's grim folk," are so adamant that they absolutely know how your body works and how anything else is wrong.

I completely understand why some people feel the need to shower twice a day, just as I completely understand why some people only need 1-2 a week.

As long as you aren't smelly, it's down to the individual!

Totally agree. Personal preference.
