To reduce the number of showers I have each week

Let's be honest here. During lockdown probably most of us that worked from home rolled out of bed to their laptop and started the work day (in pjs)

I believe my need for showers daily took a nose dive. Don't get me wrong I went old school and did a daily clean with a flannel and yes still brush my teeth twice a day. I was showering twice a week.

Now back into the swing of things, working face to face (twice a week) I find my routine has stayed the same and the need for daily showers has gone. Obviously if I go work out I will do but I'm talking daily no.

What's other people's experience? Has everyone resumed normal life or are there people out there like me who are now content doing a flannel wash instead of a daily shower????

I am waiting for the gross comments but honestly I don't feel worse for it and my water bill has dropped!

And every black person I know showers every day even though hair isn't washed. With soap.

How do you know the showering habits of every black person you know?

I couldn't possibly tell you how often my colleagues wash, or my DSs mate or the neighbours a few doors down.

Kanaloa · 09/07/2022 08:10

@mjf981

Seems to be just splashing soap and water at yourself then wiping it off. I did see someone on another thread say they also do their feet by putting them in the sink one by one. Just seems like for the average person it’s making an easy job hard and uncomfortable. Surely can’t be nice to be scrubbing your bum and feet with a cloth when you could just shower.

SillyDoriswithaDangler · 09/07/2022 08:14

So the stereotypes are true, the English are soap dodgers...

Sosiej · 09/07/2022 08:19

@00100001 because I'm black and know black people? It's a norm that has carried between black people everywhere, I'm telling you that now. Daily washing and less frequent hair washing due to its texture. This isn't really a debate, but you'll make it one. It's true for most people outside of Britain probably to shower daily. Just like shoes off is a thing for many people.

Not sure why you care enough to bring up this point really, It's a cultural norm that has spread across continents. I do not care enough to argue further.

My good friend showers before bed then goes to work the next day having merely splashed water onto her face and brushed her teeth.

I sometimes sit with her on the train. She absolutely does not smell of BO, but she also does not smell exactly fresh.

What do you mean by “not smelling fresh”? Do you mean she doesn’t smell of soap/shower gel?

5128gap · 09/07/2022 08:40

I agree that most people are conflating 'fresh' with perfumed. A small number of people smell unpleasantly of BO. Others smell pleasantly or unpleasantly of perfume ( I'm very sensitive to smell and can pick up the scent of aftershave, perfume or other highly scented toiletries as soon as the person walks in the room. It can makes me feel quite queasy unfortunately.) Still others smell of nothing at all really. Maybe if you stuck your nose in their hair or inhaled their skin they might, but in day to day contact, nothing. I have no idea how often they shower. But I'd rather be close to these neutral smelling people than the 'fresh' perfumed ones personally. And its extremely rare that I'm around a person with BO.

Belephant · 09/07/2022 08:46

@5128gap I agree, I think lots of people slather on scented stuff to quite an antisocial degree. It's not very classy or sophisticated.

lap90 · 09/07/2022 08:50

Takes less than 5 minutes for me to shower. Can shower and do a quick bathroom clean in 10 minutes.
The comments about lying (about a daily quick, basic shower of all things) are pretty amusing.

Mitzymarvel · 09/07/2022 08:53

I’m really surprised at how many people would rather flannel wash at the sink than have a quick shower! Only takes a minute!

I am excluding people with mobility issues from this. But for most people, why on earth not just have a quick shower?! So much better, easier and fresher.

You may not smell bad if you’re cleaning yourself (although some people sound deluded with their weekly showers!) but why choose to do that?

I feel so so much better for a shower every morning. Even on a lazy Sunday when I’ve been slobbing around the house, I’ll have a shower at some point or I just feel gross.

Adversity · 09/07/2022 08:55

@5128gap exactly my experience, I’m really allergic to any perfumed product on my skin inc washing powder and have to arrange hotels to boil wash linen or mire likely take my own. Actual scent makes me feel unwell.

Why are you excluding people with mobility problems? If a shower is 'better' and 'fresher', why is that only the case for able bodied people? If you believe a flannel wash to be inadequate for hygeine, you can't just arbitrarily exclude some groups from that in order to keep your PC credentials. I have a friend who can neither bath or shower without assistance which is provided to her once a week. She has a flannel wash on the other days and is clean and fresh at all times. Why would that be different for me who doesn't have a disability?

Pruella · 09/07/2022 10:30

Yes that makes no sense. I guess you mean people with mobility problems are not to blame for being less fresh and not ‘better’.

Oh do calm down dear. I’m excluding people with mobility issues because I made a point that it’s ‘easier’ to jump in the shower. But may not be for those who are disabled.

I also never said they weren’t hygienic - you added that bit!

But seems to me a lot more effort for most people to have an effective flannel wash than a quick shower.

Point is, some people have a good reason for not being able to shower regularly. Others just sound like they’re choosing a less effective, yet probably more labour intensive route than just having a quick shower.

And if your flannel wash is not taking you more effort, time and mess than a shower, then you probably don’t smell that great!

You not only said easier, you said better and fresher. I simply pointed out that if my flannel wash isn't the best or freshest then surely you believe that to be true of everyone, including those with mobility problems?
But by all means suggest this perfectly reasonable question denotes an inappropriate over reaction on my part from which I need to calm down, and suggest I smell ( are you 5?) To sidestep it. I understand that's easier for you.

MuddlingThroughLifeLittleByLittle · 09/07/2022 10:44

Daily shower /bath but at night.
Flannel round face etc in the morning.
Even in lockdown

I can't settle if im out of evening routine

No..it fucking pisses me off when I am told how grim and vile it is not to shower eveyday. But when I say I'm disabled apparently it's not me. I'm free from being grim and vile because of a disability but dp apparently still will be? Make sense of that for me

Because it is the most effective method! I’ve been to enough festivals and camping trips to know that a shower beats a flannel wash hands down.

When done properly, a disabled person - or anyone for that matter - can still be clean with a thorough flannel wash, but lets not pretend that it’s the preferable or better option.

I can certainly tell you my grandparents were desperate for showers in their later days, and for them not being able to have one was a compromise.

I do wonder if you must be kidding yourself to think otherwise.

Well we will have to agree to disagree on what is preferable or better. There are enough people on the thread who've explained why you're incorrect with regards to their personal circumstances.
Personally I afford other adults sufficient respect to accept they know how they prefer to keep their own bodies clean. If someone smells that's not very sociable, but provided they don't, how and when they wash is none of anyone's business. If you must judge, do so on results, not the results you imagine there will be based on their actions.

Yes unwashed hair has a smell, just like washed hair has a smell. Its a fact, they smell different and thats what is meant by 'I can smell when someone hasnt washed their hair that morning'. It has a different odour to hair that has been washed...For some people that might be offputting or unpleasant

You know that many/most Black people choose not to wash their hair every day?

And what of it?

bellac11 · 09/07/2022 11:08

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 09/07/2022 02:54

Well my hair isn't unwashed. It was washed on Tuesday. Just because it wasn't washed today doesn't mean it isn't washed. If I'd gone a week then yes maybe I'd say it was unwashed. But when my hair still smells of shampoo then I'll argue it's clean

Jesus, you're being so defensive. Has it just been washed, no. Therefore its unwashed, its not some awful statement, its just a fact.

Currently my hair is unwashed. Im still in bed. I washed it yesterday. Once I get up, have a shower and wash it, it will be washed.

You're the one who cares so much about other people's washing habits duck. I will defend the fact someone is saying I am unwashed. Your hair is washed. It was washed yesterday.

bellac11 · 09/07/2022 11:15

I couldnt give a toss about people's washing habits, I havent claimed otherwise, I pointed out that people seem to be misunderstanding the concept of a 'smell' and you came right along to prove me right.

Everything has a scent, a book, the pavement, tarmac, grass, plastic, paper, cardboard, everything has a smell to it and hair that has not just been washed that day will have a different smell to that which has. Its just a fact, its you that seems to have taken offence about that.

I suppose I can consider my teeth are brushed too, I did them last night after all.

Haha prove you wrong. You're not remotely right. But you can keep telling yourself that if you want to. Bless.
