To wear sandals to an interview?

I've damaged both my big toes running and they've come off, I cannot put my foot in a shoe without wincing.

Would this be absolutely horrendous and I can tell the story? Or do I wince and just put a shoe on?!

My big toes haven't come off - my toenails!

Hahahaha oops!

I think it would be fine if they're not too casual

CrowsEverywhere · 07/07/2022 15:17

It depends if you're comfortable that they might remember you as 'the one who showed us her toe nail injuries'.

daisypond · 07/07/2022 15:18

I’d try to get shoes on, personally. Can you walk OK with them on? Depending on the job, sandals are generally not appropriate.

hamandpotato · 07/07/2022 15:19

@CrowsEverywhere this made me smile! They're appropriately bandaged the other toes do have nails with polish on

Wear sandals to the door then put your shoes on for the interview.

hamandpotato · 07/07/2022 15:19

@daisypond PA in NHS. I waddle with shoes on as they only came off this morning and the interview is Monday morning.

If they’re dressy sandals, I’d wear them. But, don’t tell the toenail story. Few people would remember that you wore sandals instead of shoes, but everybody would remember your toenail story. Not in a good way.

StoppinBy · 07/07/2022 15:21

I think it's ok as long as you preface with a cheerful 'sorry about my shoe attire, I injured my toes, they are on the mend but with the bandages on my shoes are a little too tight'. Get the elephant in the room out of the way and move on :-)

Meraas · 07/07/2022 15:22

I've damaged both my big toes running and they've come off

Whaaaaat? <misses point of thread> Is this common?

StoppinBy · 07/07/2022 15:22

Also, I wouldn't go in to any further detail than that.

hamandpotato · 07/07/2022 15:22

@Meraas apparently so! I did a marathon and I now have no toenails to prove I did 26.2 miles Blush

If they are dressed and you still can't get your shoes on by Monday, wear your sandals and it will be obvious from the dressings that you have a problem. Would be a bit of a worry if the NHS held an injury against you.

hamandpotato · 07/07/2022 15:23

@StoppinBy thank you, that was the plan. Might be a good ice breaker...

@daisypond PA in NHS. I waddle with shoes on as they only came off this morning and the interview is Monday morning.

Wear the sandals then, don't waddle in, they will see the bandages on your toes anyway and that well probably explain why you're wearing them and it is the NHS after all!

MaggieFS · 07/07/2022 15:24

Please do not mention your toenails in an interview.

I really wouldn't be going in sandals if at all possible. Even if they are horrible granny comfortable flats, can you find a cheap roomy pair for the interview?

And it's still a few days away.

daisypond · 07/07/2022 15:25

Yes, I agree now. Wear the sandals. Better not to hobble if you can help it.

hamandpotato · 07/07/2022 15:26

Mixed reviews... I'm now nervous!

I'm going to pop into Asda to see what they have that's not going to age me 30 years or make me walk like a duck

Nothing wrong with dressy sandals. I wouldn't mention the toenail story as that's what they'll remember about you!

ItsSnowJokes · 07/07/2022 15:30

I can honestly say in all my years of interviewing I have never really noticed shoes. Sandals can be smart, they will see the dressings and totally understand. If they didn't offer you a job based on wearing sandals with toes bandaged you have dodged a bullet!

hamandpotato · 07/07/2022 15:30

@TheKeatingFive I don't think I could live with the nickname 'toenail' Grin

OP posts:
Motheranddaughtertotwo · 07/07/2022 15:34

I would wear the sandals. I once dressed really uncomfortably (but smart) for an interview and it was awful, I was in pain the whole time and I did not come across well at all.

emmathedilemma · 07/07/2022 15:34

runner here and I was going to say that no one needs to see your manky toes in sandals but if they're bandaged that's a bit different and does indeed give you a talking point......although surely you'd have managed to slip into conversation that you ran a marathon anyway ;)
How sore are they though, i've lost a lot of toenails and never had to bandage them.

hamandpotato · 07/07/2022 15:35

@emmathedilemma I can assure you the remaining 4 on each foot aren't manky and are freshly painted!

They're very sore at this point, can't put pressure on them... maybe I'm an odd runner

OP posts:
emmathedilemma · 07/07/2022 15:38

gosh the only time i've had toes that sore was when they blistered underneath the nail. You need bigger trainers!
