To wear sandals to an interview?

I've damaged both my big toes running and they've come off, I cannot put my foot in a shoe without wincing.

Would this be absolutely horrendous and I can tell the story? Or do I wince and just put a shoe on?!

It's not like they're getting their minge out.

😂

All this talk of 'flesh' it's like the OP's looking for a job as a Victorian governess

hamandpotato · 07/07/2022 17:25

@Duttercup I was warned about AIBU and I can see why now. It's a happy chaos!

99% of people have been helpful to be fair and I have found a lovely pair of smart work shoes now. Worth an ask though, seems very 50-50

What on earth is wrong with smart sandals. Its not as if your going bare feet.

Good luck 🤞🏻

And the safest option, at interview is probably advisable.

This is a common misunderstanding, but there are plenty of industries where dressing over formally is more problematic than under formally. It demonstrates you don't understand the culture.

But then you're advocating white trainers over dressy sandals, so your own view is all over the place anyway.

@daisypond PA in NHS. I waddle with shoes on as they only came off this morning and the interview is Monday morning.

If you waddle then put swimming flippers on and say you have just come from an all-night celebrity fancy dress party where you were Orville the Duck.

That's what I would do.

No, I advocated a specific type of outfit, for which white trainers would look fine and nicer than bandages toes, with rational given as to why trainers are being worn at all.

Dogscanteatonions · 07/07/2022 17:35

I don't know if anyone else has suggested this but you can get silicone toe caps for about a quid in Savers (or on Amazon) they should make it comfortable enough to wear shoes.

Ultra runner here - lost a few toenails in my time!

Duttercup · 07/07/2022 17:39

@Dogscanteatonions I thought you meant to disguise the missing toenails. A kind of fake toe effect. That would have been amazing.

lemonsorbetinthesun · 07/07/2022 17:40

I interview people. If you had sandals on and had bandages on some toes I would assume that you were wearing sandals because you had to.

hamandpotato · 07/07/2022 17:42

@Duttercup I did too!

Thank you @Dogscanteatonions I will see if I can locate this shop, we definitely don't have that in the village. It's quite boring here

Your ability to do the job is a long term thing. Your toes are a short term thing. I would get the nicest sandals I could, no velcro, no hint of care home chic. I would apologise for them straight away and explain that you ran a marathon and injured them. You may find someone on the panel is also a runner and you can chat about times etc and break the ice. Good luck. Of you are the right person you will get the job

hamandpotato · 07/07/2022 18:03

@AngelinaFibres care home chic made me laugh!

NHS admin managers aren't generally fans of sandals, sleeveless tops, bodycon dresses or anything that's comfortable or vaguely fashionable.

The admin dress code could very well also say no trainers or sandals.

I'd go for a larger pair of lace up shoes from the men's range and like the UltraWonderwoman PP, get a protector from Amazon to stop pain from the nail touching the top of the shoes. Like I have to do for running (size 8.5 cloudmonsters when I'm technically not even a size 6 women's). It's better to be able to walk confidently than hobble about with a giant bandaged toe, IMO.

Out of interest, what was your finish time?

hamandpotato · 07/07/2022 18:05

@NeverDropYourMooncup I think that might be a good idea regarding trainers!

4hr 56 finish time

deedledeedledum · 07/07/2022 18:07

Could be an ice breaker especially as running can be seen as a good healthy committed activity.

bbqhulahoop · 07/07/2022 18:08

It's fine but I'd message in advance. I did an interview in joggers and a blouse and jacket once cos I'd broken my leg. Just sent an email before saying I'm so sorry about my attire, really want to work with you, but no trousers/ tights fit my cast! They laughed and I got the job, with wfh until my leg healed

Well done! If you search for toe protectors on amazon, you can get individual ones or ones for the entire set, which might be more comfortable, they're not exactly expensive so you can buy both types to see what you like; this is an example of the whole toes ones

Well of course. Everything on here is an opinion FGS
Your views are opinions too.
That is rather the point of chat forum isn’t it.

And some of these opinions will be informed by facts and experiences too.

Fizbosshoes · 07/07/2022 18:09

Is it too late point out that skate-board-lady has (shock horror) bare forearms...? 😀

Maybe the schools and 6th forms who insist on formal suits and business attire are preparing kids for work in the NHS..? The type of clothes they are meant to wear bears little resemblance to what most people wear in RL!!

As an aside I feel fortunate that I have run several marathons and the worst foot injuries I acquired were minor blisters and a bruised nail (2nd from little toe - I just covered it with nail varnish!)

TheKeatingFive · 07/07/2022 18:12

Thats not how you're presenting your contributions. You even threw around the word 'fact' upthread, with no factual support at all.

So in your opinion, and literally no one else's on this thread, white trainers would be better than smart sandals. Cheers for your contribution, let's move on.

wandawhy · 07/07/2022 18:15

Borrow crutches, explain it was an injury due to running several marathons.
You will get the job because heroic.

ThatDreamSheep · 07/07/2022 18:28

I would say so yes, but with long trousers so it's not as obvious as a skirt or dress when there's a lot of bare skin and would draw the eyes to your feet.

Re-read my comment where I used the word fact. Go back and re-read it.

There’s suggested interview attire for a reason because there are established facts around people’s perception and rationale for them.

That’s not hard to understand.
