To wear sandals to an interview?

I've damaged both my big toes running and they've come off, I cannot put my foot in a shoe without wincing.

Would this be absolutely horrendous and I can tell the story? Or do I wince and just put a shoe on?!

That post was what made me decide to post in spite of the fact that the OP has successfully located some shoes!

Well cheers for that 😆

I think it depends on the sandals. I have beautiful sandals and very well manicured feet. Not icky Birkenstocks or the like. Dressy, patent leather, high heeled sandals that look stunning with skirts and dresses in summer.

That said, I had the most severe blisters on the bottoms of my feet once - about the size of my palm on each foot (from wearing flat shoes). So bad I had to walk on my heels keeping the balls of my feet off the ground. I've also torn the plantar fascia under my foot. Both times I've had to wear joggers in the office. Fugly joggers - they were my at home treadmill joggers. Little soft clouds on my feet but majorly fuggers. Everyone knows how much I love shoes, so for me to show up in fugly footwear, there's definitely something wrong.

Now I'm relegated to flats while foot recovers from the plantar fascia tear. So hard to find non fugly flats....

Good to hear you've found shoes and have toe protection options, but if you're still too sore, I'd do the sandals with apology for the bandaged toes. I don't see bandaged toes as any different to a bandaged finger. I cut my finger nail in half, vertically, once 🤢 and that was bandaged for 8 weeks. Nothing you can do to hide that.

I would probably be a bit surprised if someone turned up to an interview in a t shirt but I don't think it would stop me hiring them.

It would be a very nice t-shirt, promise.

Nicer? Not sure what you mean by that though it sounds really condescending so I suspect it’s to make me doubt myself. Nice try but I’ve worked in many, corporate, shared, funky London studio types, provincial small town formal, rural barn conversion type. Never had a sandal issue. Or maybe I have and not known. I’ve never worked in the public sector though.

They just sounded nicer places to work in terms of both the attitude towards women's footwear (and how women are expected to dress) and in terms of actually being able to wear things without running the risk of injury.

FishcakesWithTooMuchCoriander · 08/07/2022 11:15

I’d just email to let them know that you have injured your feet so you have to wear open toed footwear right now. No need for more details. And it doesn’t matter if the sandals are dressy enough - it’s an adjustment for a (temporary) health need.

no need to mention it to the panel. They can be told in advance. And you can all just ignore the footwear situation in the interview.

I'd wear the sandals and explain.

I interviewed someone years ago, she was green and new to interview/work, her dress had split at the back when she ran for the bus. She didn't want to be late and brought it up as soon as she walked in the room, she was mortified.

15 years later she is in a very high flying position at the same firm. Sometimes you need to have the balls to own a situation.

I completely agree with this - it wouldn't bother me to explain about my toenails, like you say, better to own the situation than side step it (no pun intended!Grin). It'll be an ice breaker and a talking point with regards to the running/marathon subject.

Where do you all work?!

I work for a large corporate, not a creative industry, and wouldn't think anything of sandals for an interview in the middle of August. Sure not flipflops but sandals? Fine.

What's an NHS PA? Band 5? I'd happily wear trousers and a t-shirt for that interview.

Thanks for this, I was beginning to think I hellishly low standards Grin. I think smart sandals would he fine for an interview, especially in this warmer weather. As long as they're not Adidas sliders then fine!

hamandpotato · 08/07/2022 16:09

I called them this morning to confirm dress code and they laughed when I explained. Apparently their dress code is smart casual, no trainers or jeans but toes and forearms are fine Wink

They invited me for the interview today as someone cancelled and I ended up getting the job... in sandals!

Thanks everyone for the advice. Toes win!!!

Well done 👏👏👏

Augend23 · 08/07/2022 16:17

Congrats OP! Glad the sandals didn't hold you back Grin

Mrscaptainraymondholt · 08/07/2022 16:52

I'm an NHS manager and wouldn't mind re sandals in fact as it is likely to be a heat wave next week I'd be surprised at anyone wearing full shoes unless it was a uniform or safety issue.....

I've had both toe nails removed and the last time I wore by reefs to work and actually had googly eyes on the toe - he wa Franky Manky the ganster toe - rattled as I walked...... I wouldn't suggest you do that until you've been there a while. 😁

Mrscaptainraymondholt · 08/07/2022 16:53

just seen your update! congratulations 👏

ThreeLittleDots · 08/07/2022 17:09

If a line manager took offence to an injury then I wouldn't want to work for them anyway. The marathon running casts you in a brilliant light.

I was interviewed by someone in sandals the other day anyway.

ThreeLittleDots · 08/07/2022 17:10

Ooh congrats!

To an interview, yes there is.
It’s not proper attire.

You’d be better off wearing trousers and clean new white trainers (also with an sorry for these but I have a foot injury explanation) than sandals.

Funny - as an interviewer I would think nothing of sandals but I would be a bit Hmm at white trainers! OP, I think comfort is your priority. I would wear the sandals and either say nothing or briefly mention it's marathon-related injury without going into gory specifics. Good luck in the interview!

IlkaDoxie · 08/07/2022 21:31

Oops, just saw your update - well done 🍾

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 08/07/2022 22:52

Brilliant well done!

hulahooper2 · 08/07/2022 23:11

When I lost a toe nail I wore Skechers walking shoes , they are soft

MarshaMelrose · 08/07/2022 23:22

Is it really a thing that the nhs wouldn't employ someone because they wore sandals in July? No wonder they're always short-staffed with such bonkers hiring policies.

Vikinga · 09/07/2022 00:17

Awesome! Congratulations

hamandpotato · 09/07/2022 15:05

Thank you everyone Flowers
