I know he’s a narcissistic, lying dick but even he must feel some level of embarrassment. My guess is that the slimy knob is looking around for new roles/after dinner speaking and wants time to organise that. It wouldn’t be anything altruistic like actually governing the country temporarily.

I really don't think he's needing to worry about lining his next job up! Finances won't be tight at casa Johnson.

All about his ego, proving a point that he still has some power, wanting to feel he's done something on his terms.

MajorCarolDanvers · 07/07/2022 14:39

To give the Tories time to elect a successor

Sarahconnor1 · 07/07/2022 14:39

He didn't use the word resign once in his statement. I wonder if he is playing for time?

RedWingBoots · 07/07/2022 14:39

He took 3 weeks to leave the Foreign office because he didn't want to pay for accommodation.

Now what large residences does the PM have access to?

RedToothBrush · 07/07/2022 14:40

Nope you nailed it with the ego shit.

He wants to put out a whole bunch of policy stuff to nail his legacy rather than be the fuckwit pm who screwed up the country and lead for the shortest term possible.

ChateauBelle · 07/07/2022 14:40

He can’t let go of power. Also he and Carrie are celebrating their wedding at Chequers this summer.

I hope the conservatives find someone else as an interim PM and quickly.

RedWingBoots · 07/07/2022 14:41

He's hasn't gone to see the Queen yet...

BMW6 · 07/07/2022 14:43

Who is his successor?

PatriciaHolm · 07/07/2022 14:43

He's also deluded enough to think things can still change, and somehow he won't have to go.

WaitroseWoman · 07/07/2022 14:44

Wedding party
Time to give out Honours as promised
He and Carrie not wanting to leave the provisions, accommodations and prestige of Downing Street and Chequers until they absolutely have to

FAQs · 07/07/2022 14:45

It would probably be a bit irresponsible (I get the irony in that 🙃) to just hand the keys over and slip off with his gold wallpaper without a handover period.

WaitroseWoman · 07/07/2022 14:47

He'll also have a lot of shredding and photocopying to do.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 07/07/2022 14:48

He wants to throw stacks of gold at the voters and be so popular there will be riots if he leaves.
I'm just making this up - but I wouldn't put it past him.

DashboardConfessional · 07/07/2022 14:51

He's taken a load of bribes for selling off contracts (NHS!) and needs to get that done.

Basically this.

A few more weeks to pocket the silverware and hide prawns in the curtains.

As if he cares about that 😂.This is Boris Johnson we’re talking about. Anyway Raab could be caretaker until a new PM is elected. Not great but the lesser of 2 evils

Wasn’t he moaning about not being able to send Wilf to Eton and the fact that he’s earning less as PM than he was before that?

BasiliskStare · 07/07/2022 14:55

I have 2 thoughts on this 1) the sooner the better 2) a reasonable period where a new leader can be elected without it being a snap decision. I don't think 3 months is unreasonable as he is a busted flush and it lets them choose the best new leader / PM they can . I am veering towards 2 & frankly if anyone wanted to be PM in his circumstances to get a wedding party at chequers - good luck to them - There will be many other lovely places they could go.

ResentfulLemon · 07/07/2022 14:56

To give Carrie enough time to remove all of her carefully curated decorating and be able to use Chequers as a party base over the summer are my best guesses...although being able to finalise some dodgy deals that he's promised to his financial backers is pretty likely too.

I can't think of a single legitimate reason in the interests of the country because we have a Deputy Prime Minister who can run a caretaker government over the summer break until a new leader is elected.

Yep, I thought that too. He’s a huge fan of Chequers

RedWingBoots · 07/07/2022 14:59

John Major has written to the 1922 Committee to tell them to boot him out now.

Ted27 · 07/07/2022 15:00

If he goes now he will be the Tory PM with the shortest term in office.
If he makes it to October, that honour will fall to Theresa May.

balalake · 07/07/2022 15:01

If he stays for another month his tenure in office will be longer than that of Theresa May. Given his misogyny towards her (and every other woman bar his mum and sister probably), I would not be surprised if that was part of the reason.

NotDavidTennant · 07/07/2022 15:03

This is how it's normally done. Both Cameron and May stayed in post until a successor was chosen. There is no precedent for there to be a caretaker Prime Minister.
