Can someone explain why Boris Johnson wants to stay on til the autumn?

I know he’s a narcissistic, lying dick but even he must feel some level of embarrassment. My guess is that the slimy knob is looking around for new roles/after dinner speaking and wants time to organise that. It wouldn’t be anything altruistic like actually governing the country temporarily.

“The whole thing is unbelievable. As I write these words, Gordon Brown is still holed up in Downing Street.

“He is like some illegal settler in the Sinai desert, lashing himself to the radiator, or like David Brent haunting The Office in that excruciating episode when he refuses to acknowledge that he has been sacked.

“Isn't there someone – the Queen's Private Secretary, the nice policeman on the door of No 10 – whose job it is to tell him that the game is up?”

Boris Johnson writing in the Torygarph, May 2010.

I have 2 thoughts on this 1) the sooner the better 2) a reasonable period where a new leader can be elected without it being a snap decision. I don't think 3 months is unreasonable as he is a busted flush and it lets them choose the best new leader / PM they can . I am veering towards 2 & frankly if anyone wanted to be PM in his circumstances to get a wedding party at chequers - good luck to them - There will be many other lovely places they could go.

How can any self-respecting MP serve in his cabinet, especially those who have voted against him in the VONC and those who have told the world that they can't work with him because he can't be trusted? How can we have him representing our interests abroad when every world leader will be saying "Why should we trust a word that comes out of your lying mouth, your colleagues don't?"

It would probably be a bit irresponsible (I get the irony in that 🙃) to just hand the keys over and slip off with his gold wallpaper without a handover period.

This is what happens after a general election.

resetsmart · 07/07/2022 15:51

@Dotjones

how is he a better PM than May & Major…? (Didn’t like either of them but they were more about the job than furthering their own interests!) He’s no better than my puppy at being PM! 😂He craps everywhere and leaves others to clean up the Brexit.

Johnson is an arrogant, self indulgent man who hangs out with Russian secret service people and lies virtually every time he opens his mouth!

@gryilla
But parliament closes over summer holidays (we are almost there bar 2 weeks)
They do get time off.

Why the rush?

Because things like covid, inflation, Ukraine don't close over the summer?

SisyphusDad · 07/07/2022 15:54

YABU to think he has any sense of embarrassment. Did you read his resignation speech (I couldn't bear to listen - it would have made me sick).

Are we allowed to talk about ounces of decency yet, or does it still have to be grammes? Either way he hasn't got any of them

And do you think Bojo will actually be doing anything about those over the summer?

AmaryIlis · 07/07/2022 15:56

I wonder whether Carrie is that keen on a big wedding now anyway? Plus having it at Chequers when everyone knows he has no real right to be there is going to take the shine off it more than a little.

.
No. That's why we need a PM with a vested interest in doing something about them. What the hell happened to those fourth boosters, for instance?

DowningStreetParty · 07/07/2022 15:58

i don’t think he’s really going to go- he’s going to find a way to stay.

AmaryIlis · 07/07/2022 15:59

Doesn't someone need to look into his admission of a meeting with Lebedev that he never reported back on? Is it appropriate to have a PM being investigated for potential corruption and treason?

Dillydollydingdong · 07/07/2022 15:59

He hasn't resigned yet. He said he'll resign when the new leader has been appointed. He could change his mind!

Flapjacker48 · 07/07/2022 16:00

As he postponed wedding reception is at Chequers in July.

They are a brazen pair. I'm sure they will cope.

He is hoping something will come up which will let him stay. You know like a war.

I thought that too………

Newgirls · 07/07/2022 16:02

They want chequers for the summer

prob got some dodgy mustique trips planned too paid for by Russian doners

Odious pair

WaitroseWoman · 07/07/2022 16:05

We need to get Exit done! Leave means leave!

Please, somebody, anybody - Larry? - call the removal men, of one sort or another.

54isanopendoor · 07/07/2022 16:05

EGO (he's hoping to stay as long as possible & maybe even to 'turn it around')

Money (he's broke, he's always broke)

Chequers party this summer (see above)

Needs to give out Honours (arise, Lord Dacre)

Hasn't been given permission to Leave by his paymasters yet...

All of the above.

I would not be surprised, the shifty, lying weasel will have to be prised from the building.

JesusSufferingFuck22 · 07/07/2022 16:02

I thought that too………

Or the demise of HMQ.

SmallThingsEverywhere · 07/07/2022 16:06

I didn’t know about the wedding party at Chequers. Just seen that mentioned on Twitter. Guess that could be it. He’ll be out grabbing as many freebies as he can on the way out.

He would have to ask the Queen to dissolve parliament - it would be unusual for a party with a 70+ majority to want an election, so it might be hard for her to say yes.
Also doubtful the Tory party would thank him.

milveycrohn · 07/07/2022 16:17

I seem to remember last time, that it took what seemed like ages for a new leader to be elected.
Meanwhile, you would need a caretake PM, who would probably be Raab, as he is de facto deputy. And does this make him ineligible for leader?
In most jobs there is a resignation or handover period, and most of the summer, will be parliamentary recess anyway.

AmaryIlis · 07/07/2022 16:18

He's got papers to shred, computer records to scrub, bodies to bury ...
