I know he’s a narcissistic, lying dick but even he must feel some level of embarrassment. My guess is that the slimy knob is looking around for new roles/after dinner speaking and wants time to organise that. It wouldn’t be anything altruistic like actually governing the country temporarily.

To put through the things he had planned, to give out honours and make sure he’s in office longer than may.

and obviously to give Carrie time to steam off the wallpaper to take with them.

mellongoose · 07/07/2022 15:03

I haven't rtft but it's worth remembering that that Theresa May remained PM between May and July 2019 between resigning and leaving office.

This is not an unusual thing to do.

If he goes now he will be the Tory PM with the shortest term in office.
If he makes it to October, that honour will fall to Theresa May.

That post sums up why I'm not shouting from the rooftops that he's resigned. Let's face it, he was a better PM than May, a better PM that Brown, a better PM than Major. It's not like he's going to be replaced with someone who is competent and honest - people like that don't become MPs, let alone PMs. All a change of PM means is the start of a new campaign to oust them.

JennyForeigner · 07/07/2022 15:04

Apparently he has his delayed wedding party booked at Chequers.

Really. Also just that he is a grasping conscienceless grabber who will take every spoon and last hour he can get his sweaty mits on.

NotDavidTennant · 07/07/2022 15:03

This is how it's normally done. Both Cameron and May stayed in post until a successor was chosen. There is no precedent for there to be a caretaker Prime Minister.

Lol at 'this is how it's normally done' after the last 48 hours

It’s not unusual, but it is also unusual to have 60 people missing from posts - even with him rushing to fill them, there’s currently no functional government.

NarrationNation · 07/07/2022 15:11

He wants to be the PM in charge when the Queen pops her clogs… everyone know that…

Snowjive2 · 07/07/2022 15:21

He and Carrie are hosting a large party for their wedding, at Chequers, on 30 July. As if it were their private property, and not an asset of the nation, funded by us taxpayers.

DeclineandFall · 07/07/2022 15:21

I think he thinks he is buying time. That somehow in his addled brain that he really has a popular mandate and he will try and stay. I suspect the senior Tories only agree to this because otherwise he was refusing to back down. If they keep him on they are bigger fools than I thought which is saying something.

Ted27 · 07/07/2022 15:22

@Dotjones

I don't think any of the past PMs you listed appointed a sexual predator to a key government role, one which included a pastoral element.
If Chris Pincher had sexually assaulted women would you feel the same? Describing it as 'groping ' diminishes the offence.
And this was just the final straw.

Hoolihan · 07/07/2022 15:23

They're having a wedding do at Chequers next month. Invitations have already gone out.

thereisonlyoneofme · 07/07/2022 15:23

Has he actually got a property of his own?

Snowjive2 · 07/07/2022 15:25

Yes, they own a house in Camberwell.

Snowjive2 · 07/07/2022 15:28

It’s all about hanging onto the perks of high office for him. A thoroughly seedy little man, shamelessly enabled for the last 3 years by other seedy little men and women. Eugh.

DillonPanthersFNL · 07/07/2022 15:32

Needs to get the wall paper off

JuneOsborne · 07/07/2022 15:35

Oh, it's for all of the reasons that suit him.

He has no shame, no fear of embarrassment.

He wants his summer party at chequers, he wants the contracts for his pals watertight, he doesn't want to be the shortest serving Tory pm in history, and whatever self-serving shite he can get out of these last few weeks.

KatherineofGaunt · 07/07/2022 15:36

Pretty much all the staff at Chequers hate him. They must be pissed there'll still be the big party there.

No doubt it'll be mostly or fully funded from the public purse somehow.

To give the Tories time to elect a successor

This ^^

Parliament is about to go into summer holidays so he is giving them time to elect someone carefully to replace him

I'm not a Tory so I have no egg in the game. (I'm not sure that is the right saying Grin)

But it is a sensible move for any political leader

gryilla · 07/07/2022 15:38

No such thing as a caretaker PM. PM is PM.

But also not necessary to hang on until "autumn". In the next few days they will announce a timetable for the leadership contest. It will need to go through a few rounds, and ideally it would be good to give people a couple of weeks to make their case to MPs and the Tory membership, but it doesn't need to take months.

Loss of support is clear now and all the contenders can see the top job is within reach so I'm not worried about this being a last ditch effort to stay in power.

They could time the transition for 1 August if Boris and Carrie absolutely must have their wedding 😄

Whereismumhiding4 · 07/07/2022 15:41

@gryilla
But parliament closes over summer holidays (we are almost there bar 2 weeks)
They do get time off.

Why the rush?

Iwantmyoldnameback · 07/07/2022 15:41

He is hoping something will come up which will let him stay. You know like a war.

MaggieFS · 07/07/2022 15:42

Wedding bash at chequers + not wanting to be outdone by May. Entirely selfless and in the national interest, of course.

the80sweregreat · 07/07/2022 15:45

Yeah, leave means leave indeed.
Unless your name is Boris Johnson of course and you have a wedding party to arrange ( and get other people to fund it)
A few people to cross off the guest list too!

Notonthestairs · 07/07/2022 15:48

"Why the rush?"

Because setting a coordinated long term agenda covering a wide range of issues will be easier once there is some sense of stability? Because a stable Cabinet who will be there for longer than the summer is a good thing? Because we'd like to consign this debacle to the bin? Because we can't trust Johnson?
