Can someone explain why Boris Johnson wants to stay on til the autumn?

I know he’s a narcissistic, lying dick but even he must feel some level of embarrassment. My guess is that the slimy knob is looking around for new roles/after dinner speaking and wants time to organise that. It wouldn’t be anything altruistic like actually governing the country temporarily.

He modelled himself on Trump from the start, and now his ignominious career in politics is over, he's in denial, just like Trump.

Trump is probably encouraging Boris to stage a rally of supporters to storm the palace.

ShandaLear · 07/07/2022 17:23

Easy couple of months, innit? Parliament in recess, no PMQ, plenty of time to enjoy the benefits of being PM without the responsibilities. Bit of time to lovebomb the nation in an attempt to bring us round. Anyway, I’m sure he’ll enjoy being on the back benches and carrying out his constituency work to the best of his ability (if he can remember the name of his constituency).

StopStartStop · 07/07/2022 17:24

I think there'll be something financial in it for him.

Towelpower · 07/07/2022 17:26

tabulahrasa · 07/07/2022 15:03

To put through the things he had planned, to give out honours and make sure he’s in office longer than may.

and obviously to give Carrie time to steam off the wallpaper to take with them.

I was going to say it's to get the decorators in and save the wallpaper!

JesusSufferingFuck22 · 07/07/2022 16:02

I thought that too………

Agreed. He thinks he can turn it around somehow.

He's not taken this well at all, he's furious.

OneFrenchEgg · 07/07/2022 17:37

I think he's a massive security risk and continues to be, with no hope of continuing in the job to put the breaks on. I want him out and the entire cabinet of roads with him.

SimonaRazowska · 07/07/2022 17:44

He is only there for himself

I think he may do massive damage

He will nog leave

He will only leave if forced

SarahSteedman82 · 07/07/2022 17:47

Ted27 · 07/07/2022 15:00

If he goes now he will be the Tory PM with the shortest term in office.
If he makes it to October, that honour will fall to Theresa May.

You mean other than Alex Douglas-Home and Anthony Eden?

dadadeedadada · 07/07/2022 17:53

According to somebody on LBC earlier it's because he's planned his wedding party. At chequers.

slowquickstep · 07/07/2022 18:01

He has a wedding party planned to take place at Chequers

LakieLady · 07/07/2022 18:02

ChateauBelle · 07/07/2022 14:40

He can’t let go of power. Also he and Carrie are celebrating their wedding at Chequers this summer.

I hope the conservatives find someone else as an interim PM and quickly.

Yep, I reckon it's the wedding. He won't want to fork out for a venue, even if they could find one at such short notice.

I still wouldn't put it past the arrogant fuckwit to try and get re-elected leader though. He only needs 8 Tory MPs to nominate him, and I'm sure there are 8 equally fuckwitty MPs prepared to do that.

comealongponds · 07/07/2022 18:04

Playing for time, he’s still in denial that the party is finally over and hoping he won’t actually have to go

ego, clinging to what’s left of his power

modelling himself on Trump and refusing to go

Sqeebling · 07/07/2022 18:08

They're all on holiday during August so gives them more time to decide who to elect in his place

Sqeebling · 07/07/2022 18:09

Be a bit weird if he just downed tools today and buggered off.

LakieLady · 07/07/2022 18:09

Snowjive2 · 07/07/2022 15:25

Yes, they own a house in Camberwell.

I thought it was hers, and a flat.

They've probably got tenants in there anyway, and need time to get them out.

And while I realise Camberwell has come up in the world in recent years, SE5 still doesn't have the cachet of a W1 postcode and a mansion in the Chilterns.

whoopsnomore · 07/07/2022 18:14

It's a combination of
a) hoping MPs and party members will be charmed by his "bumbling ol' me " act
b) throwing a succession of back of a fag packet "popular" policies out to fool politically illiterate people then calling a snap election
c) Free wedding venue to which lots of wealthy and influential russian international will be invited and he can pretend he's respected as a leader and save many tens of grand at the same time

It would be better if he just buggered off. Seems like many in his own party would rather have someone else caretaking until they elect a new PM. Boris Johnson does not have any authority left and is seen as a security risk.

I wonder whether Carrie is that keen on a big wedding now anyway? Plus having it at Chequers when everyone knows he has no real right to be there is going to take the shine off it more than a little.

I bet they leave it in a right state, too: red wine stains on the soft furnishings and Wilfred's scribblings on the walls, and it's rumoured that Dillyn isn't housetrained.

Yep to all three

He has a wedding party planned to take place at Chequers

And probably paying nothing for the venue even though it's technically private use (and pocketing a few kickbacks in the form of catering, etc from backers for political favours)

cardibach · 07/07/2022 18:19

Dotjones · 07/07/2022 15:03

That post sums up why I'm not shouting from the rooftops that he's resigned. Let's face it, he was a better PM than May, a better PM that Brown, a better PM than Major. It's not like he's going to be replaced with someone who is competent and honest - people like that don't become MPs, let alone PMs. All a change of PM means is the start of a new campaign to oust them.

He wasn’t a better Pm than any of them. He’s the worst ever, and should be expunged for the record for the shame he brought on the office. Lying, cheating, corruption, sexual incontinence, more corruption, more lying, etc etc etc

DowningStreetParty · 07/07/2022 18:21

Holy moly. Of course… housing. It really feels more and more of a security risk this holding on until October thing. He’s got however many kids to provide for. What family home has Boris Johnson got to go back to?
He probably needs time to dial round and find a donor/s to give him and Carrie the millions needed for a massive house with the kind of wallpaper they like.

If financial gifts were to appear, what would an outgoing PM have to be promising to give to them in return?

cardibach · 07/07/2022 18:22

AmaryIlis · 07/07/2022 15:52

Because things like covid, inflation, Ukraine don't close over the summer?

He’s doing fuck all about the first two and no British politician would do anything different from him over Ukraine.

lljkk · 07/07/2022 18:27

even he must feel some level of embarrassment

No, he doesn't. This is a calculated move. He doesn't feel humiliation, and he hopes to wiggle his way back to popularity. May stayed on as Caretaker PM but she had some class & sense to accept her fate, and no one worried about her doing last minute maneuvers to cling to power (Trump like).

Normally I object to kicking a man when he's down. But in this case... is he even down? Oh well. What are the odds of Carrie divorcing him before the youngest is 5?

BruceAndNosh · 07/07/2022 18:29

He needs the trappings of PM until he sorts out the alternative arrangements.
His Oxfordshire house is let out, Carrie's Camberwell flat it too small for
