To think Suella Braverman would make a great new Prime Minister

As per title.

She has said she will run in the leadership contest, would be a breath of fresh air.

Besides, I think anyone in that inner circle is tainted now. It was a really weak cabinet jammed to the rafters with half wits and no wits who knew what Boris Johnson was like and were happy to support him anyway. Their own ethics and values are skewed. They only jumped once they realised he was for the chop. I think we need to look to the back benches, to people who have at least some integrity and credibility, because it’s certainly not any of the current front bench shower of charlatans.

carefullycourageous · 08/07/2022 00:39

hahaha as someone who wants rid of the Tories I support her wholeheartedly

Stripyhoglets1 · 08/07/2022 01:10

Thwomp · 07/07/2022 21:27

However she is only 42 and probably doesn't have enough experience - one to watch certainly.
Wow, first time I’ve seen a @Clavinova opinion I’ve agreed with.

Suella should absolutely be on some sort of watchlist.

There are criminals with more respect for the law.

Exactly!

Let's at least start with someome as PM - who hasn't already indicated law breaking is A OK with them.

BIWI · 08/07/2022 09:23

It’s like watching a trifle trying do calculus

Fabulous @ShandaLear

BIWI · 08/07/2022 09:23

Oh - there was a grin in the middle of that post!

borntobequiet · 08/07/2022 09:25

She’s standout awful among a collection of prize deplorables. No.

Sonineties · 08/07/2022 10:20

I do actually get a vote in the leadership election and I would rather tear up the ballot than vote for her.

People I might vote for:

Jeremy Hunt, who has never served in Johnson’s dire government but does have plenty of ministerial experience

Saj, who by all accounts is a decent bloke with integrity and also has plenty of experience

Tom Tugendhat, only if it came down to a choice between him and one of the below

People for whom I will not vote:
—Braverman—Fizz with Liz Truss— Traitor to women and self publicist extraordinaire Penny Mordaunt —Billionaire man of the people Sunak — Nadhim « can’t remember why I went to the Presidents Club event at which girls were groped and harassed » Zahawi — Ben Wallace because being PM is more than just giving away free tanks

Literally none of them are appealing. I really hope we get a GE out of this while it's still fresh in peoples minds what the Tory party are really like.

Yes!

Elvira2000 · 08/07/2022 12:34

Is this a piss take or litmus testing by SB's team?

No-one who knows anything about her and politics could believe she would stand a chance, let alone make a great PM.

megletthesecond · 08/07/2022 12:36

Are you mad? She hasn't a clue about anything.

Clavinova · 08/07/2022 16:20

ShandaLear
Have you ever seen her on Question Time?

Yes - I thought Wes Streeting was out of his depth debating with her.

Lucylul
She is only in position because of support for Johnson and Brexit.
She's also not really up to it intellectually; by no means is she a proper QC

To be fair she does have a Cambridge law degree and a masters from the Sorbonne. Emily Thornberry isn't a QC either - does that mean Emily Thornberry is "not really up to it intellectually"? Couldn't Labour find a "proper QC" for the Shadow Attorney General role either? (NB I quite like Emily Thornberry myself)

SausageinaBun
I find it more unpalatable to have a lawyer who doesn't mind breaking the law as PM than having a journalist who doesn't mind breaking the law as PM. Maybe it's naive to expect lawyers to be committed to upholding the law, but I still do expect that.

Keir Starmer, Emily Thornberry and David Lammy are all in favour of the "law-breaking" steel tariffs the government have recently introduced - the steel tariffs that break international law which were cited in Lord Geidt's resignation letter.

I think that probably rules out most of the Labour Party as well then if they are "A OK" with the steel tariffs that apparently break international law.

PurpleDaisies · 08/07/2022 16:31

Yes - I thought Wes Streeting was out of his depth debating with her.

I think it’s fair to say that’s likely to be a minority opinion

Butterflytattoo · 08/07/2022 21:57

I think it's fair to say the entire post is very much a "niche" perspective.

GreenLunchBox · 08/07/2022 22:18

Be afraid. Be very afraid

PaulineBrady · 08/07/2022 22:24

Sensing a consensus position on this, along the lines of you must be fucking kidding…

JocelynBurnell · 12/07/2022 10:09

Suella Braverman believes too many are on welfare and wants to cut universal credits for those not working full time.

Many women work part-time as they have caring responsibilities and would be especially targeted by these cuts.

balalake · 12/07/2022 10:39

To those who think the worst possible Tory Prime Minister (apart from Mr Johnson) would increase the likelihood of a Labour (or at least non-Tory) government in 2024, a lot of damage could be done by then, and even so, people may still vote in a Tory government then.

Blossomtoes · 12/07/2022 10:45

Bring it on. Anything that hastens the end of Tory misrule gets my vote.

Icanstillrecallourlastsummer · 12/07/2022 10:47

Her record on both Brexit and climate change tells me no. I think she's very Tory, which for me is a negative. My preference would be for the least Tory Tory to win this :)

AyeUpMeDuck · 12/07/2022 10:50

Is she the one that's said the UK spends too much on welfare?..

Whilst the poorest of society are starving and using foodbanks..
Whilst the elder generations need their pensions and even then often can't heat their homes...

If she is the one that said that, she's an awful choice for pm.

entropynow · 12/07/2022 10:50

Unreasonable? Batshit insane more like

luckylavender · 12/07/2022 10:51

tttigress · 07/07/2022 08:08

As per title.

She has said she will run in the leadership contest, would be a breath of fresh air.

Hard no from me. I think she's dangerous & not nearly as clever as she thinks she is.

Blossomtoes · 12/07/2022 10:52

Is she the one that's said the UK spends too much on welfare?..

Yup, that’s her. Pound shop would be Thatcher.

AyeUpMeDuck · 12/07/2022 10:59

Blossomtoes · 12/07/2022 10:52

Thought so.

So anyone on UC, PIP, Carers Allowance, disability, Pension etc
would all be poorer...

Yeah good choice op. Make the poor people so poor they starve or riot..
