To hope Johnson doesn't resign?

Because if he clings on until the next GE, he'll be completely unelectable and we'll be rid of the Tories.

I'm hoping he digs his heels in just like he always has, even though by rights he should be fucking off with his tail between his legs.

I'd be happy with Zahawi too. Feeling more positive now. I hope Patel goes and Coffee.

If the caretaker stuff is true I've no doubt he's egomanical enough to think he can make another play to stay in till the next election. His brain can't conceive his unpopularity.

Talking heads on sky last night said that it’s technically possible for him to resign as leader of the Conservative party but remain prime minister. No idea about the ins and outs of that but it certainly sounds like a vulnerability that needs a review when the dust has settled.

SueSaid · 07/07/2022 09:35

'just said on another thread I'd back Zahawi for next PM!'

He has got the right image and comes across well in interviews.

Whoever it is will have to make sure they haven't upset the person who seems to actually runs politics and the media, Cummings.

Cornettoninja · 07/07/2022 09:43

Cummings?

itsgettingweird · 07/07/2022 09:44

Agree again Janiie (I may need a lie down!)

I like him since he was vaccines minister. You get get a feeling when he talks he genuinely believes what he is saying and actually has some morals (for an MP!).

Others though think he's too business minded not to be another who looks after his own interests

Ginajo · 07/07/2022 09:49

I would also be happy to see Zahawi as leader.

Oh come on. Johnson is to blame for his own downfall.

What a great day🤗🥳🥳

SleeplessInEngland · 07/07/2022 10:10

Murdoch will take good care of him. A book deal where he gets to talk about how he was the next Churchill and a 300k a year column in the Sun.

But part of him will always mourn the three-term tenure that was so cruelly taken away. Ah well. He can calm that annoyance with another exciting affair.

ClaudineClare · 07/07/2022 10:11

Zahawi won't get it.

DuncinToffee · 07/07/2022 10:13

Media? The ones who deleted the Carriegate article, had a week long Beergate campaign, blamed Angela Rayner for crossing her legs, took bungs, got peerages, those?

SleeplessInEngland · 07/07/2022 10:19

Apparently lots of tory mps understandably saying 'fuck that' to the idea johnson can hang around for another three months. We'll see.

Mmm, and I think a lot of people will share the same worry. He can't be trusted to piss off.

Rabbitholedigger · 07/07/2022 10:33

No he has to go today.

Who would be a good caretaker until the new leader is in place?

SleeplessInEngland · 07/07/2022 10:36

Truss has conveninetly cut short her really important trip to Indonesia to be back this morning. What great timing that she had to go in the first place and not commit to resigning eh?

Do you mean the Zahawi that was interview on the radio yesterday and kept trying to tell us that we got a tax cut yesterday, but was eventually more or less forced to admit that personal taxes are at their highest level for 80 years.
The one who said he was going to be open and transparent, but wasn't about taxes. Great choice.

SueSaid · 07/07/2022 11:36

'Oh come on. Johnson is to blame for his own downfall.'

Well you're of course entitled to your opnion. However they won a landslide because BJ is very popular with the public, he got us through the pandemic when Labour would've had us in solitary confinement for 2yrs. His downfall was Cummings, it wasn't having a sandwich in the office on his birthday nor being responsible for Pincher when Theresa May had happily had him in office despite the allegations.

Funny how folk are mentioning wet drips like Baker and Ellwood on news channels as potential leaders! They need a strong charismatic leader so the very slim pickings does seem to be Zahawi or Zahawi. Wallace is ok but he has a starmer like rabbit in the headlights look about him sometimes.

SleeplessInEngland · 07/07/2022 11:39

Nah, even in 2019 his personal ratings were nothing special. It's a weirdly persistent myth that he started out with '97 Blair-esque approval ratings.

Meraas · 07/07/2022 11:44

FayeGovan · 05/07/2022 19:51

Oh ffs

I bet you're still blaming everything on corbyn

Are you getting annoyed at people not wanting to vote for Labour?

I'm no Tory but surely it's up to individuals to decide who, if anyone, is worth voting for.

Yep. They won a landslide because of the electoral system. The Tories in 2019 under Johnson got 400,000 more votes than under May in 2017 and a vote share about 1% higher. It just happened that the people who did like Johnson were more likely to live in constituencies where their votes mattered than people who didn't like him. That's just how it goes with first past the post. Blair interestingly was another big beneficiary of this, in 2005. He really wasn't that popular with the public by that point but the system gave Labour a strong majority.

FourTeaFallOut · 07/07/2022 11:48

I heaved a sigh of relief when Starmer came out of the gate saying he understood why Labour lost so many seats. That he could see how voters lost faith and were alienated by a Momentum fuelled labour.

Brilliant, I thought. Here come the grown ups. But the whole of the Labour party is still a toxic mess and a strategy of simply waiting for the Tories to fall means that we might see a snap election with an opposition party who's most notable policies is picking out those people they don't want to vote for them.

It's complete bollocks. Can we not just have a left of centre option that isn't a Trojan horse for faith based politics and puritanism?

Ginajo · 07/07/2022 09:49

As a BAME person, I'd be all for a (good) BAME leader, but I can't unsee Zahawi's sycophantic interviews about Johnson and partygate. I know they all defended BJ though. They're all terrible basically.

FourTeaFallOut · 07/07/2022 11:50

Err. Wrong thread, I'll take my rant elsewhere, as you were.

HarrietPierce · 07/07/2022 11:53

JaniieJones, Ellwood does at least have moral integrity unlike the liar Johnson. He was pronounced a hero when he rushed to attempt to survive PC Palmer in the terrorist attack Westminster in 2017. He far outshines your man , liar Johnson, in every respect.

Cornettoninja · 07/07/2022 11:53

got us through the pandemic when Labour would've had us in solitary confinement for 2yrs.

fgs Janiie back up your points with reality not fantasy events that didn’t happen. You’re repeating propaganda that isn’t even backed up by actual real life events mate.

Are you getting annoyed at people not wanting to vote for Labour?

@Meraas I think it’s more the repetition of the lie that there is no other option. It stops people actually thinking about alternatives because it’s a statement designed to stop a thought process. It’s part of an underhand propaganda campaign.

SleeplessInEngland · 07/07/2022 12:08

Current MPs taking new jobs right now while Johnson's still PM are just pathetic.
