To think that takeaway pizza isn’t worth it?

glitzysandal · 05/07/2022 18:00

Takeaway pizza is often very expensive and when compared to a similar offer from a supermarket can come to double or three times the price.

I find the supermarket alternatives just as suitable however have come under fire recently for dissing dominos in this way.

How do others feel on what I didn’t realise was such an emotive topic?!

Papa johns pizzas are better than Dominos but we no longer buy takeaway pizza. Massive mark up for cheap dough with a thin smear of tomato paste and a few scant toppings. Almost any other type of takeaway feels like more of a treat.

Trinity65 · 05/07/2022 19:58

I agree with you OP
There are times, though, where I might have a few slices of Pizza my DCs have ordered (usually Meat Feast or Pepperoni I like) but they are so expensive for what they actually Are.

Not a big Pizza fan really anyway but the cost of a pizza, then delivery is much too high .

goldierocks · 05/07/2022 19:58

My local Papa John's is takeaway only, there is no option to dine in.

I'm never disappointed when I order from them, both the base and topping ingredients are full of flavour. I also enjoy their version of chicken nuggets.

I think I'm right in saying that Papa John's runs as a franchise, so the quality could vary a lot between owners/locations.

I'd also never order at full price - there is always a decent discount code available somewhere!

We have a pizza oven. In comparison everything else is shit

That must be lovely

When on holiday in Croatia Years ago (so many years ago, in fact, it was still Yugoslavia) they had an outdoor Pizza Oven in their Pizzeria . That was very nice Pizza I must say and we could watch them prepare it from start to finish.

Pappa John's pizza is excellent. I agree though pizza isn't my go to takeaway mainly because of the price and I rarely have a take away anyway.

I agree

Some years ago we were on Holiday in East Sussex and the Campsite had a Papa Johns
Very nice Pizza and they also delivered direct to the Caravan (Very hot as well as we were in a great spot in that Caravan)

brown543 · 05/07/2022 20:01

My kids love Dominos, personally I think it's a bit average.

Having tried most supermarket pizzas of varying prices, my first place goes to the big Asda pizzas they make on their deli counter. Not a big fan of Asda food but they're good. Or, as a surprise, the fairly cheap Tesco frozen ones which taste way better than you'd think.

SouperNoodle · 05/07/2022 20:03

I do love a dominos but the pizza I make is much nicer and costs a couple of quid for the ingredients and I cheat so only takes 5 mins to make and 8 mins to cook

Same! Ours is a plug in indoor one with a stone. We've stopped buying supermarket pizzas completely as there's just no comparison. Plus it made us realise just how much they're marked up considerabing to cost of ingredients!!

catsonahottinroof · 05/07/2022 20:13

I agree with you about the cost, however I'm not a fan of pizza anyway. There is a difference between supermarket pizza and Dominos, which I have to say is a bit better in some ways than supermarket (and much better than kebab style takeaway pizza).
If I have to have pizza I prefer homemade wholemeal, made with Red Leicester, or Dr Oetker's for shop-bought, as I quite like the biscuity base and flavours.

Featuredcreature · 05/07/2022 20:16

I agree I have not found a decent pizza place round here at all, I have my usual for a kebab who are fairly reliable. Pizza blah, they are either doughy and undercooked or just terrible. I don't mind domino's the chicken wings and little cheese garlic bread things are nice. It's just so extortionate now, the fuckers even charge for delivery. No thanks.

Every takeaway I have had in the last two years is pretty underwhelming. Too spend for what you get.

bellalou1234 · 05/07/2022 20:17

I love pizza hut delivery.

CaptainThe95thRifles · 05/07/2022 20:28

I don't really understand these threads because there's a huge range of takeaway pizza options - Dominos is not at all comparable to a proper Italian style takeaway. If you judge the concept of takeaway pizza by Dominos standards, well, of course, a pre-made supermarket version is fine.

Personally I prefer a fully home-made pizza, or a nice independent Italian takeaway pizza, and I've never encountered a supermarket version that could come close to either.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 05/07/2022 20:29

It depends what I'm looking for in a pizza!

Cheeky and greasy? Local takeaway

Baller and greasy? Dominos

Pizza for the sake of pizza? Supermarket

Feeling fancy without much time? Local pizzaria

Feeling fancy and hands-on? Pizza oven pizza

Pizzas suit all occasions

Heytheredeliah · 05/07/2022 20:29

It depends which takeaway you go to. There is a great Italian pizza takeaway near me that absolutely worth it. I love dominoes too. With the cost of living going up, I will stick to supermarket pizza which are not as nice imo but much much cheaper.

Prescottdanni123 · 05/07/2022 20:31

I quite like the occasional pizza from my local takeaway place. Agree about Dominoes though. Its rubbish.

2MinuteRice · 05/07/2022 20:31

Obviously all restaurants/takeaways have overheads, staff etc to pay. This adds to the cost.

I used to make pizzas in a local takeaway. The cost of ingredients compared to the purchase cost was ridiculous.
Bases were brought in frozen, massive tins of sweetcorn that were cheaper than we can get for a smaller one in the supermarket.
All meats were frozen and cooked on top of the pizza.
The cheese was also frozen, though that was the best bit, I freeze grated mixed cheese for our pizzas now. Settles and cooks better.

Kids love Dominoes, Pizza Hut & Express. They are so expensive though. For a family of 5, even with vouchers it's a lot of money.

I found a dough setting on our bread maker, it's great! We take turns adding the ingredients and putting it on. All get toppings ready depending on what we prefer.

The sauce is passata with herbs, onions, garlic and a tiny pinch of sugar. If I'm super organised it's the pasta sauce I use for the kids that I blitz with loads of vegetables in.

We also make garlic bread with the dough, literally garlic and butter, is bloody lovely!

We got a pizza stone for the oven but it's fine just on trays.

My mum got an outside pizza oven, it's amazing and another reason why the kids have to visit GrinWink

Thatswhyimacat · 05/07/2022 20:31

I do love Dominos, it is extremely expensive but only fools pay full price!

Supermarket pizzas are mostly rubbish, toppingless cardboard. I find you have to go M&S or finest range to get one half decent and even then I hate that stonebaked crust style that all supermarket pizzas have.

Luckily in London we have places doing Naples style pizza pretty much everywhere!

lightisnotwhite · 05/07/2022 20:31

The first time I ever had take away pizza was in the states. It was massive and amazing. You cut out coupons to make it better value but it was fantastic value anyway.
I was bitterly disappointed by the tiny tasteless cardboard that is U.K. takeaway pizza.

Fresh Supermarket pizza is worth £4. The frozen stuff is worth the £1.50. I am partial to our local pub that does a walnut, courgette, Italian sausage and blue cheese pizza for £13.

No way is a Dominos/ Papa John version even worth the calories, let alone £17.

hashbrownsandwich · 05/07/2022 20:32

I always make our own from scratch. We worked out each pizza (pepperoni, onions, peppers x 3, sweetcorn and olives along with obvious tomato sauce, mozerella and basil) is £1.07 a pizza.

Takeaway would charge 10 times that.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 05/07/2022 20:33

I forgot one!

Quick and easy pizza? Pita break pizza

eatingasatsuma · 05/07/2022 20:33

I love Dominos but we live in a village which is too far away from one. Chicago town are delicious at a fraction of the price!!

motogirl · 05/07/2022 20:34

Supermarket pizza isn't great, so our local place is better, however dominos is ok - I buy delivery pizza because I don't have food I want in, so saying you can buy them is irrelevant.

motogirl · 05/07/2022 20:36

@SheepingStandingUp

I wait for the 50% voucher here Grin

motogirl · 05/07/2022 20:38

@BritWifeInUSA

Really? Where? They were $20 when I lived in the USA 15 years ago. But there's always vouchers in the USA and here - it's £4.99 for the lunch deal at domino's for instance

Enko · 05/07/2022 20:38

I'd rather have a pizza express pizza from supermarket than a domino's.

A fireza pizza on the other hand I do at times pay extra for.

Also now I want pizza 🍕
