To think that takeaway pizza isn’t worth it?

Takeaway pizza is often very expensive and when compared to a similar offer from a supermarket can come to double or three times the price.

I find the supermarket alternatives just as suitable however have come under fire recently for dissing dominos in this way.

How do others feel on what I didn’t realise was such an emotive topic?!

Domino's / Pizza Hut etc are like Alton Towers. Only the crazy and rich pay full price. We only ever do it on a 40% discount

miltonj · 05/07/2022 18:30

I love all pizza, expensive takeaway, cheap kebab shop pizza, frozen pizza, authentic Italian pizza. It's all brilliant and always worth it.

Only on MN would someone add banana to a pizza Confused

queenofarles · 05/07/2022 18:33

We have a pizza oven. In comparison everything else is shit same here, even my Dcs think everything else is below average , it’s probably the only thing we bought during COVID that was worth it , we make different versions like Roman style , NY style, and my favourite Neapolitan Style dough topped with olive oil, zaatar and cheese, Delicious!

Bananas on pizza are a Swedish thing.

I agree, getting pizza delivered is so expensive now you can buy a decent pizza in a supermarket for a few pounds.

Supermarket pizza cant touch an authentic fresh pizza but compare it to pizza hut papa johns etc and I would rather save £20 and eat a pound less grease.

I’m surpr

girlfriend44 · 05/07/2022 18:36

Pizza is expensive and not filling. Very very rarely buy it or order it. Can't understand the fuss. It's all mushy stuff and dosent full you up.

BritWifeInUSA · 05/07/2022 18:36

I’m surprised at the prices being quoted on here for Dominos. Over here their pizzas are $5.99 each for medium and $7.99 for large. That sounds very reasonable to me.

ouch321 · 05/07/2022 18:38

Dominos is the worst chain.

Papa John's is much better.

I don't think it's too bad as there's pretty much always a BOGOF or similar deal available.

Changechangychange · 05/07/2022 18:41

Dominos isn’t much better than supermarket pizza, but there are loads of great independent pizza places near us (and Franco Manca which is also pretty decent). Cost £7-10 per pizza, but it is a massive pizza which lasts me two meals. I’ll buy the salad and drinks from the supermarket so doesn’t cost the earth. Pizza isn’t an everyday weekday meal for us, if we are getting takeaway it’s for a treat.

Apache pizza is delicious, the garlic bread especially is divine 😋

Ragwort · 05/07/2022 18:51

I've got a lovely 'posh' pizza from Sainsbury's tonight ... cost £3.75 (£1 off) would easily feed two but I'll probably eat it all myself.

butterflyflutterby123 · 05/07/2022 18:53

Home made is better. Not being snobby, simple dough make a tomato sauce, slap it on with cheese and some chopped veg. Simple quick delicious and healthy

CuriousCatfish · 05/07/2022 18:56

I don't like homemade pizza. The dough is never as nice as Dominos. .

Whodoiwanttobe · 05/07/2022 18:57

Totally agree. Overpriced and not a treat at all!

KevinTheKoala · 05/07/2022 18:57

Takeaway pizza isn't great and I'd rather spend it on a supermarket deal but to be fair the reason it costs so much is because of the cost of the electricity, property rents, staff wages, fuel for drivers, training new staff because staff retention is crap because nobody wants to be screamed at for minimum wage (I used to work for a two different chain pizza takeasays, customers would get oddly aggressive over pizza) and the actual food itself isn't what is expensive.

At least domino's uses fresh dough and not frozen pucks like pizza hut did, I used to giggle every time I saw the 'made fresh' sign on window when I worked there 😂 but no, I wouldn't spend £20+ on a pizza deal when you can buy a much nicer one at tescos for a fraction of the price.

inmyslippers · 05/07/2022 18:57

I would love to find a decent supermarket pizza. Would save soo much money

Svara · 05/07/2022 19:01

Domino's is absolutely foul. Nasty greasy stuff. I've had pizza from a small chain or independent takeaway that was worth every penny. Supermarket pizza can be good too if you spend a bit more, but the very cheap stuff tends to be horrible. You need a decent base but can always add extra toppings.

WhereYouLeftIt · 05/07/2022 19:13

If your idea of takeaway pizza is Dominos, Pizza Hut, Papa Johns and the like then no, takeaway pizza isn't worth it.

However - if you have a local business who make the most amazing thin-crust sourdough pizzas topped with exciting combinations of amazing ingredients, then it is absolutely worth it. We have two such businesses locally.
<sighs contentedly>

CuriousCatfish · 05/07/2022 19:15

Good old snobby MN.

stayingpositiveifpossible · 05/07/2022 19:17

End of our road thankfully local pizza place. Lovely and we can walk there and it stays hot.

KatherineJaneway · 05/07/2022 19:18

I stopped buying it years ago. The quality of some of the supermarket versions is great now. I love Waitrose's No1 pizza's.

slowquickstep · 05/07/2022 19:19

Never understood why anyone buys takeaway pizza, surely nobody is in that much of a rush or is that bone idle they can't pop a pizza in the oven and take it out 10 mins later.

Jdiosmio94 · 05/07/2022 19:19

Why are you comparing the two? The takeaway pizza is expensive because you haven't had to go out, source ingredients, deliver them to the store, pay for the rent, utilities, insurance, wages NI, pension and other staff costs to make the pizza and deliver it if applicable.

You are paying for the convenience.

Nothing winds me up more than people who complain about how expensive food is they haven't had to cook when eating out or ordering a takeaway, because usually they have no idea what it takes to make and prepare that food. The margins on takeaway food are paper thin also.

edwinbear · 05/07/2022 19:21

I don’t mind Papa Johns occasionally, but I do object to the c.£30 cost, by the time DC have added potato tots and chicken wings. It’s DC’s ‘go to’ takeaway unfortunately but a very rare treat in our house. I do think supermarket pizza tastes different - not in a bad way, just different.
