Following on from the mid-20s thread, I wonder advice people would give their mid-40s self?

You can ,lose a shit ton of weight but he (DH) still isn't going to want to have sex with you.

antelopevalley · 05/07/2022 01:17

  1. Don't move overseas permanently, look for something closer to home and what you both originally wanted.
  2. Study for a new career.
  3. Be serious about planning the retirement finances and years.
  4. Nip the wine drinking in the bud.
  5. Tell the Parents not to move, again, and not to follow you.
  6. Recognise you have a short attention span and get some help.
  7. Don't try day trading in shares.
  8. Plan for the day the DC are no longer at home, but you are.
  9. Start a new hobby.

@expat101 can I ask more about 6. Recognise you have a short attention span? Thanks

nopuppiesallowed · 05/07/2022 01:32

Never moan when your parents 'just drop in'. One day they won't be there - and you'd give your right arm to see them walking down your path.
You look hot in your 40s. You know what colours and clothes suit you and how to look good. So - enjoy the age you are and stop stressing about 'fine lines'.

Pretty much it really and something I discovered about myself in recent times, then popped up an article of ADHD underdisgnosed in women in our local paper and its me all over.

I wished I had realised this much sooner and explains so much in hindsight. :)

If you can afford it, spend money and time on yourself. Join a nice gym (pool, spa, sauna, etc.) and go regularly. It is great for your physical and mental health. And get a bike. If you’re travelling less that about 3k each way the bike should be the default mode of transport.

WellThatsMeScrewed · 05/07/2022 04:06

What hobbies have people started?

MooFroo · 05/07/2022 04:52

Fab thread!

do more fun shit - don’t just talk about doing it!

TriceratopsRocks · 05/07/2022 05:22

Be aware of peri-menopause symptoms, and push your GP for HRT when they start (I lost 8 years to very ill health not knowing what was going on).

Make time for you as well as everyone else.

Lose that weight and get fit NOW. Your life will be so much better when you can do stuff you couldn't before (see also HRT comment).

Allicando · 05/07/2022 05:31

Dump the toxic relationship and be captain of your own ship. Your kids are off to Uni and life is yours for the taking.

70kid · 05/07/2022 06:11

You will need to choose between your ass or your face

Actually i forgot something important

If you've mastered resting bitch face - remember to put it on!

I finally mastered it but forget that bit sometimes!

Oh I think totally the opposite! I've got much nicer as I've got older - actively paying strangers compliments etc - and I'm so happy about it.

We are all going through varying degrees of shit and I'm really thinking about that when I deal with people these days.

No need for resting bitch face at all.

KangarooKenny · 05/07/2022 06:49

Pension review.
And get fit now, and maintain it. No point trying to get fit and lose the belly when menopause hits.

Provenceinthesummer · 05/07/2022 06:56

Get fit now before you hit old age
look after your teeth
Prioritise your energy levels, you can’t pour from an empty jug
Good friends will keep you laughing and feeling supported
Look after your assets - it’s too late to start again
Rock solid financial support plan for your old age

Gingerwarthog · 05/07/2022 07:06

Book the second week on Lake Garda with Mum.

Hurstlandshome · 05/07/2022 07:09

Great thread!

RhubarbFairy · 05/07/2022 07:11

This thread is amazing.

I listened to 'Wear Sunscreen' again after starting it. I was 17 in '99. There's a song thar deserves another go round in the charts. I absolutely did not appreciate the magnificence at 17.

40 next month and watching with interest.

I need to pay attention to Number 4!

And I was considering getting into Number 7...🤔

LividLaVidaLoca · 05/07/2022 07:55

I’m 42 this month and always had lovely skin.

My turkey neck just appeared overnight in the last six months and I’m absolutely fucking livid.

goldfinchonthelawn · 05/07/2022 08:04

Get fit - go to bootcamps, go running. Make time for your own health.

Do the work you really want to do.

Read up on peri menopause. I'd never even heard of it until I was so deep in it, bloated and doped up on anti depressants when what I needed was HRT!

Goingforarun · 05/07/2022 08:38

You are so young.

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 05/07/2022 08:53

Your life has turned to 100% shit, but it'll be unbelievably better in the end. The next couple of years will be a lot easier if you don't start smoking again and do get counselling.

Spend every minute you can with your parents as it won't be long. For God's sake, go to your Mums Christmas Day as you're going to be tortured by the guilt.

Sunscreen and moisturiser every day otherwise you end up looking like a half-dried apple.

Take up parachuting properly while you are still just young enough. You loved it and you were good at it!

Don't let the weight creep on. 3 pounds a year doesn't seem like much at the time, but after 10 years, fuck me.

swedex · 05/07/2022 08:59

This is a fanastic thread I've just turned 42 so many of these things are relevant!

Im telling myself now read all these posts and act on them!

Titsflyingsouth · 05/07/2022 09:02

I see what you did there @ChorltonWheelie Wink
