to think that the reporting of the deaths of people in the public eye is disgusting

MN HQ, feel free to move this elsewhere if you think more appropriate.

Not long off the back of the Caroline Flack circus (And let's not get into that again, I am referring directly to their reporting in regards to a dead woman) we have this morning the news that sadly Jake McLean, who isn't actually a celebrity in himself, but the ex boyfriend of two, has died following a car crash. HIs girlfriend, Yasmin Oukhello who appears in TOWIE, is in intensive care.

The articles this morning talk at great length about Jake's 3 years in prison 10 years ago, his ex girlfriend Lauren Goodger using her interviews from 2013, Yasmin's ex boyfriend and his love life.

Why? Just why? Jake has a family. He presumably has parents, or siblings, friends, people who love him. It is unlikely that Yasmin even knows he is dead yet.

Why does it become acceptable to report in this manner when it's someone (barely) in the public eye? Do we stand up at funerals and say "He was in prison and he went out with Sarah in 2012". No, of course we don't.

All the papers are doing are opening the floodgates for the standard comments of "who", "he's not a celebrity", "he's a criminal so good", "talentless Z lister", etc etc etc.

But he is ultimately a man who has died and his family and friends have to read this shit. I honestly think it's disgusting. Its all over the internet and in every shop I've been in this morning, so god knows how his poor mother feels.

I hadn’t seen this until this post so yes, you are amplifying the reporting. Wasn’t he found guilty of being part of an armed robbery? If I’m thinking of the right one, that is a serious crime and of course it’s going to be part of the reporting.

I can help.

I'm a journo
I love salacious gossip and get off on it
I'm related to him
I'm obsessed with him
I'm a "year 9 skipping around"

Have I missed any?

Despite the fact I've actually been pretty honest about my own sensitivities and the fact it's more about the people reading it, that got diluted in the bile and the chumming with each other and congratulating each other on their responses.

Are you confusing me with someone else? I've never said or implied any of those things.

And YOU have indulged in more inventive and name-calling on this thread than all the other posters put together.

Well you do seem like you have just left school being so proud you studied sociology

I'm 30.

I've taught for 8 years. (part of the reason I have half an interest in what my teens are reading).

Thanks for your input though (interesting you comment on my perceived youth given your spelling and grammar). I never said I was proud. Apologies for having an interest, I didn't realise that wasn't allowed on MN.

Doesn't everyone on MN forums, AIBU or otherwise, have an interest in Sociology of some form?

It's probably time to step away from the thread op, unfortunately you have done the opposite of what you wanted, because by bringing this to the attention of people who knew nothing about it, more clicks will have been generated by these people searching it and the media outlets will keep producing stories on it, thinking people care.

I get your point about his parents and how they feel reading stories/comments about him, he was however a thug and a criminal, he didn't deserve to die but I have limited sympathy for someone who CHOSE to make other peoples lives hell, and just because he has died, it doesn't absolve him of his atrocious crimes.

"posters" plural - it wasn't aimed at you.

Thanks for the input, again.

Your sole input so far has to be back up other posters and be rude, so excuse me if I'm not remotely interested.

No.
Yes, I certainly will learn in future. I've been here years , on threads about minor and major things and even tbe strong controversial topics havenr given me the pounding I've had here.

Lesson learned.

I honestly don't think you've had a pounding, people are just disagreeing with you and questioning your over investment in this.

You are right.

And won't that make the pile oners rub their hands with glee.

I honestly didn't expect it to go this way. I expect people to disagree wiht me, but even though I've seen how robust AIBU is, I didn't expect that.

Brilliant. The fact his car crushed him to death will be pleasing news to you then. I'm sure the woman is THRILLED to see his face and all of the details all over the papers for everyone to read. I'm sure she will feelcmich better. When my ex was done for abuse, it was in the local paper. I couldn't bear to even look at his name

I watched a documentary where a man killed his girlfriend - some kind of mental episode and he murdered her then killed himself.

The parents spoke about how even though tbeh could never forgive him, they felt sorrow and sympathy for how he ended up too, and for his parents , and sadness for them both. Ice seen similar sentiments in one punch killer documentaries.

It is possible for people to know someones done wrong and yet still have compassion and dignity

My goodness, you have a overactive imagination and like to assume the worst about posters. Hmmm: pot, meet kettle

as a victim of an unprovoked and violent assault by strangers, yes, I’m going to think about his victim. Who has to live with this horrendous memory for the rest of her life.

like I said, I had never heard of him until you posted about it. Thus giving the story publicity and the Daily Mail, which has given the rag loads more clicks.

Butchyrestingface · 04/07/2022 17:53

You were asked by another poster what "agenda" you thought I had, having an agenda being the thing you accused me of.

Therefore your response to her on that point WAS clearly about me.

I'm not over invested though. Because I've been treated the way I have, I've had to repeatedly make the same statements that as pointed out by PP, would have been done and the discussion moved on into a wider one by now.

Never heard of this guy until now. I saw the TOWIE star in car crash headline but didn’t read it as I don’t care about TOWIE.

I don’t read the Sun or the Mail because I don’t care for their politics or how they report things.

If you don’t like how things like this are reported then don’t give them the clicks.

pimlicoanna · 04/07/2022 17:58

Given his criminal history I don't have much sympathy in it being published online.

TheOGCCL · 04/07/2022 17:59

Not RTFT but the underlying problem is that bad news sells and I suppose it's schadenfreude (which is horrible but otherwise I can't explain it). When Helen Skelton's husband seemed to leave a month or so back, there were photos of her in the street looking miserable on the phone. What does it matter to us what is going on in her private life. Celebrities like Rachel Stevens have to publicly announce the end of their relationships before the newspapers start speculating. And when a death is involved such as that of Tom Parker, they go absolutely nuts.

DashboardConfessional · 04/07/2022 17:59

But you can’t read them all and then tell us all to look up them all and then wonder why they print stories like this.

Quite. It's a circle. People know someone will have published all the details, negative and positive, somewhere. I have done it - OMG, X has died, what's the cause of death? And while the CoD may be a heart attack the articles about the person are all "took an overdose 10 years ago" just in case they overdosed this time. But papers and sites sell ad space, and the more clicks, the more they can charge.

I don't know why the OP has claimed she's been ganged up on or treated with spite and visousness. I've read the full thread and not a single poster has replied with anything inappropriate.
Its terrible when someone has to play the victim like and pretend they've been wronged just because others disagree with their opinion. It stifles debate, and makes people wary of posting perfectly normal and appropriate opinions for fear of being labelled as some kind of bully.
Im not sure if this derives from having a spoilt mentality and always being told they are the most important but if you can get a handle on it then please do as you are not being singled out or ganged up on and wanting to have the thread removed because most people disagree with you, I think a bit of self reflection is warranted as this is not how adults behave.

Well, I'm a woman, on a predominantly female site - do you get the impression I've been respected for my opinion? I certainly dont't. I see things on MN every day that I don't agree with but I certainly don't pile on (especially as it's hardly a controversial view!)

People disagreeing with you is not a pile on.

I'd never heard of this man until this thread so are you sure his family would appreciate you spreading the fact that he had a criminal past to people who didn't know?
