to think that the reporting of the deaths of people in the public eye is disgusting

MN HQ, feel free to move this elsewhere if you think more appropriate.

Not long off the back of the Caroline Flack circus (And let's not get into that again, I am referring directly to their reporting in regards to a dead woman) we have this morning the news that sadly Jake McLean, who isn't actually a celebrity in himself, but the ex boyfriend of two, has died following a car crash. HIs girlfriend, Yasmin Oukhello who appears in TOWIE, is in intensive care.

The articles this morning talk at great length about Jake's 3 years in prison 10 years ago, his ex girlfriend Lauren Goodger using her interviews from 2013, Yasmin's ex boyfriend and his love life.

Why? Just why? Jake has a family. He presumably has parents, or siblings, friends, people who love him. It is unlikely that Yasmin even knows he is dead yet.

Why does it become acceptable to report in this manner when it's someone (barely) in the public eye? Do we stand up at funerals and say "He was in prison and he went out with Sarah in 2012". No, of course we don't.

All the papers are doing are opening the floodgates for the standard comments of "who", "he's not a celebrity", "he's a criminal so good", "talentless Z lister", etc etc etc.

But he is ultimately a man who has died and his family and friends have to read this shit. I honestly think it's disgusting. Its all over the internet and in every shop I've been in this morning, so god knows how his poor mother feels.

Ia there really any need?

I understand what you’re saying @beautyisthefaceisee and I agree that serious actors and musicians who don’t court the press deserve to be left alone (e.g something like Brangelina divorcing, or loads of pictures of Pete Doherty looking awful lately as he recovers from serious addiction, fat and happy in France).

Unfortunately the ones who ring the paps so they can have an awful posed photo spread on page million of the tabloids leaving a chavvy club, or getting petrol wearing an unflattering outfit, reap what they sow in cases such as these. Live by the sword, die by the sword, quite apt in this case.

I feel for his family to an extent, but if my son had conned entry and pinned a defenceless mother down in her home while his masked mates robbed the place, I would’ve cut him off anyway, so 🤷🏻‍♀️ I certainly won’t be mourning this POS, especially as he went back to prison several times since… so much for showing remorse.

Also Essex is massive, it’s only the ones who want to get in the papers who swap Z-list partners like a bunch of randy suburbanites with a bowl full of keys.

Manekinek0 · 04/07/2022 17:17

Just stop reading the daily mail and other shite tabloids. You can't choose to read that gossipy nonsense and complain about the standard of the reporting.

Do you jump on every thread on a daily basis to say that or just mine?

Well, I don't suggest people in parking disputes raise it with IPSO, that wouldn't fall under their remit.

I remember having to explain in detail to my mum that Facebook is different for everyone, and what she sees when she logs in isn't necessarily the same as what I would see if I logged in. What I see on FB, because I only use it for groups and will quickly block/mute anything I find triggering or terminally uninteresting, are posts about active travel, bad baby names, terrible tat from charity shops and skincare. You see celebrity news. If you don't want to see it, block it from your timeline. If you don't want it to continue, don't pay it attention, don't give it clicks, don't increase their advertising revenue. Do not amplify it and drive more people to seek out their stories - making money for those outlets and sending out the message that this kind of content is popular - by banging on about it.

Not even the people I follow on Twitter who are well into Love Island etc are talking about this, and I know a fair few media/production/TV people.

beautyisthefaceisee · 04/07/2022 17:19

Sorry, posted too soon

I meant to say that made me laugh.

See, I get that it's a divisive topic.

I just genuinely, and I mean this , dont understand what I've said thats made people come at me.

Yoi seem determined to imply I've got ulterior motives, and I really havent.

Fwiw, I posted something very similar around the times of the suicides re love island. Perhaps you ans your 'media friends ' wouldnt hahe looked down on me then.

OP, if you post in AIBU, some people - quite a few, as it happens - might tell you that you're BU.

It's good form to take it on the chin, since you chose to post and invited opinions. Being an arse to people whose aren't on the same page as you is a little petulant.

WatchoRulo · 04/07/2022 17:23

"she chose to go and read them." that is absolutely without a doubt one of the most foul things I've read on here.
Why? She made a choice.
The irony of you saying people write despicable things.
Perhaps you and I have different idea of what irony is.
So she's to blame, is she? Not the idiotic people who wrote them?
I didn't say she's to blame - just pointed out that there is always a choice. If I had a celebrity offspring I think I'd be inclined to stick to my current policy of not buying any shitrag newspapers and not looking at Facebook - that's my choice. Looking at social media is not compulsory, it's a choice.

YouHaveAnArse · 04/07/2022 17:24

Nobody is looking down on you, ffs, they're just baffled about why you're cutting about this thread with the energy of a Year 9 who's heard that someone stole her boyfriend. I don't know you, I just think this is a really weird thread and maybe curating your media diet would do your blood pressure a lot of good.

MrsVeryTired · 04/07/2022 17:26

The tabloids write like that because numpties people buy them.

And yes, the clicks will count too.
Its shit and its wrong but its not going to stop anytime soon if large numbers of the general public buy this crap with this type of content.

And no, I had never heard of this person either, not saying this to be snobbish, just a fact.

OP, genuine question here. I've commented a couple of times, I don't think I've been disrespectful, but I have a question.
You have said several times, that you don't think the press should be negative about this guy, as he's now dead. But from reading this thread, it looks like he was a bit of a scumbag when he was younger. Do you really think that this should be kept off reports of his life? Or do you think that his life should be whitewashed from now on, with no reference to the fact that he spent a large amount of time in prison for his crimes? Because I cannot see why you would want this. As someone who had never heard about him before this thread, why should I only see one side of the story - he was a low-level celeb that dated several other low-level celebs, without knowing that there was another side to him? That's not honest.

TrashyPanda · 04/07/2022 17:28

beautyisthefaceisee · 04/07/2022 16:00

I'm assuming you haven't been in a corner shop or on any of the main newspaper websites today, then.

You’d be totally wrong then.
The first I’ve heard of this is your post.

having since read about him, I feel enormous sympathy for the poor woman who was held up in her home by him and his gang. How terrifying. She’s probably still traumatised.

tootiredtoocare · 04/07/2022 17:28

Just part of the cult of 'celebrity'. There is a section of the general population who feel they have a right to know every time these people fart, and behave like they know each one of them intimately. I mean, we all comment about people in the public eye, but, yeah, this desperation to know every minutiae of their lives leaves me a bit cold. Of course, the media are desperate to feed this frenzy because it sells, but, ugh.

No, you habent. Thanks.

No, I dont think it needs to be hidden

But the article could have stuck to the fact he spent years in prison, his car career3d off a cliff.

We didnt need the insinuation he was drunk driving because there testing his blood (standard practife). We didnt need a picture of the car. We didnt need the story about Yasmin (his ex girlforend) and her ex Lockie and why tbeh split up, or Lauren goodger and her tweets about him in 2013. We didnt need to know Chelsee Healey js 'devastated'.

We had this circus with caroline when Andrew managed to get his 5 minutes of fame by releasing statements that turned out to be a load of absolute bollocks..

People can think what they want about me and be as rude, snobby and spiteful as they want. I just think it's a culture culture where people are so used to this hideous reporting which drags people into something they dont need to be named or mentioned in and its truly awful, and it can and does affect mental health. We know this. And we are so used to it that people think we should either ignore it, or more bonkers yet, that I'm the villain for even mentioning it!

Funny you should say that. I was thinking it reads like she's posting from the cabin of an aircraft experiencing catastrophic depressurisation at 35,000 feet.

Againstmachine · 04/07/2022 17:32

I didn't know he was and looked him up he was a vile criminal scumbag.

He courted fame so it's going to get reported I can hardly find any sympathy.

Brilliant. The fact his car crushed him to death will be pleasing news to you then. I'm sure the woman is THRILLED to see his face and all of the details all over the papers for everyone to read. I'm sure she will feelcmich better. When my ex was done for abuse, it was in the local paper. I couldn't bear to even look at his name

I watched a documentary where a man killed his girlfriend - some kind of mental episode and he murdered her then killed himself.

The parents spoke about how even though tbeh could never forgive him, they felt sorrow and sympathy for how he ended up too, and for his parents , and sadness for them both. Ice seen similar sentiments in one punch killer documentaries.

It is possible for people to know someones done wrong and yet still have compassion and dignity

I briefly saw the headline whilst standing in the queue to pay for groceries this morning and just thought "scraping the barrel or what?"
Also annoying is the way they had used a huge photo of the girlfriend who is presumably the "celebrity" alongside the headline "TOWIE death shocker" or whatever as a kind of click-bait, knowing if they used a photo of the actual dead man - who isn't a celebrity - no one would know who he was. It's distasteful.

Is this really news? (In no way am I minimising the death of the young man - I just find it gross and pathetic the way it's used on the front page like a big story).

I haven't bought a newspaper or watched the news since the beginning of the pandemic - it's so nice!
