to think that the reporting of the deaths of people in the public eye is disgusting

MN HQ, feel free to move this elsewhere if you think more appropriate.

Not long off the back of the Caroline Flack circus (And let's not get into that again, I am referring directly to their reporting in regards to a dead woman) we have this morning the news that sadly Jake McLean, who isn't actually a celebrity in himself, but the ex boyfriend of two, has died following a car crash. HIs girlfriend, Yasmin Oukhello who appears in TOWIE, is in intensive care.

The articles this morning talk at great length about Jake's 3 years in prison 10 years ago, his ex girlfriend Lauren Goodger using her interviews from 2013, Yasmin's ex boyfriend and his love life.

Why? Just why? Jake has a family. He presumably has parents, or siblings, friends, people who love him. It is unlikely that Yasmin even knows he is dead yet.

Why does it become acceptable to report in this manner when it's someone (barely) in the public eye? Do we stand up at funerals and say "He was in prison and he went out with Sarah in 2012". No, of course we don't.

All the papers are doing are opening the floodgates for the standard comments of "who", "he's not a celebrity", "he's a criminal so good", "talentless Z lister", etc etc etc.

But he is ultimately a man who has died and his family and friends have to read this shit. I honestly think it's disgusting. Its all over the internet and in every shop I've been in this morning, so god knows how his poor mother feels.

I was actually on the Mail site, not a regular choice for me, but ended up reading an article about Elliot Page and then noticed the sidebar was full of people I hadn't heard of. I've had the radio on all day. I've been in the supermarket where papers are sold. This is the first time I've heard of this person, never mind the incident that you're posting about. It doesn't come up on my social media because I don't seem to follow people into this kind of thing.

I understand the kind of thing you're talking about completely, but you're also weirdly invested in it and amplifying the coverage. Now I'm curious as to why this person I've never heard of was in prison, so there you go.

Perhaps read the thread about my own admitted sensitivity before you say I'm "weirdly" invested.

The fact we are blind to the papers (when i went into the corner shop, it was on the front page with some hideous rhyming headline about her being in TOWIE), only proves my point.

mN threads amplify the coverage about things every day. every day. Shall I hop over to the feminist threads talking about hideous tweets by people and point out they are "amplifying the coverage" and question their motives? No. Because that's what this site is for (unless, it appears, you care about htings other people don't.)

She said on a thread yesterday (the one about the crass condolences) that when she looked on her social media, because it was headline news at the time she had to read awful comments about her daughter and it made things 100 times worse. We've all seen what idiots write on social media - trolling doesn't always have a reason.

(Some) People write despicable things on social media - another reason I largely don't bother with it.
Some people aren't very nice - I am not sure what the answer to that is (I suspect there probably isn't one) but I try to ignore it.

she had to read awful comments about her daughter

No - she chose to go and read them.

"she chose to go and read them." that is absolutely without a doubt one of the most foul things I've read on here.

The irony of you saying people write despicable things.

So she's to blame, is she? Not the idiotic people who wrote them?

OP I am a journalist. Not on a tabloid. The reason this story is being covered so forensically is because people are reading it. All newspapers have real time analytics that show then how many people are reading a story, how long they read it for, where they clicked on it from, where they go next.. More clicks means more advertising means more income for the papers.

If lots of people are reading a story they will throw resources at it. If they’re not, they won’t.

The very best way you can stop this kind of reporting is to not read it. There are many other options - the Guardian, the Beeb, i , The Times etc who are not covering this story. Choose one of them.

"All newspapers have real time analytics that show then how many people are reading a story, how long they read it for, where they clicked on it from, where they go next.. More clicks means more advertising means more income for the papers." I actually didnt know that.

Thanks for telling me he died this morning, though. I had no idea

It was an expression of disbelief, not providing information to you. But you know that.

Still, use the thread to be an arse, that's great.

CPL593H · 04/07/2022 16:59

I can't see any equivalence between the (appalling) Milly Dowler phone hacking scandal and accurate reports that someone had spent some years in prison for a pretty nasty crime.

Fingeronthebutton · 04/07/2022 17:02

Maybe if you had been the mother who’s house he and his pond life friends broke into 2 days before Xmas you might have a different view.

JLwac · 04/07/2022 17:02

I haven't been on the DM site since Caroline Flack died. The way to deal with this is not to click on DM articles and the like.
I haven't heard of the celebrities you've mentioned but it all sounds really sad. You obviously knew who they were so I'm sorry you're upset Flowers

You’ve just done the same by sharing the information?

This.
I’d never heard of any of these people, aside from Flack, but this post has flagged up that a young man who promoted his life on social media is no more.

"claim to dislike"

Sorry, are you claiming I LIKE it?! I LIKE the fact someone's dead? Very odd.

Re your second post - I scrolled Tiktok, facebook and my daily headlines come up on my phone. It came up on all 3 beore 9am this morning when I was on my way to work.

You couldn't pay me to go on mail online. The article I posted was on Facebook.

Reading comprehension - its the 'noise' the fuss and the details... not the fact someone is dead, that they're implying you may actually enjoy.

Hoppinggreen · 04/07/2022 17:09

I hadnt heard of this person until I read this thread and I have no interest in him or any of these other reality TV stars.
While I agree this is a tragedy for his family and friends he must have some sort of fame for the media to report on it and I see no problem with that.

ParanoidGynodroid · 04/07/2022 17:09

beautyisthefaceisee · 04/07/2022 16:47

its on all the tabloids.
daily mail
the sun
the mirror
social media
tiktok

the fact that you dont use those sources doesnt make it not so.

I don't think you've understood my point (to say the least).

Where did I say it wasn't in the tabloids? I didn't; rather that you should avoid tabloids if you don't want to see such disrespectful reports.

Tabloids are never respectful to anyone, and if they get people angry with their scurrilous reporting, then so much the better.

YouHaveAnArse · 04/07/2022 17:09

"The fact we are blind to the papers (when i went into the corner shop, it was on the front page with some hideous rhyming headline about her being in TOWIE), only proves my point."

I don't know what you want from this thread. You could complain to IPSO if you feel this strongly, but I'm not sure what you want any of us to do?

beautyisthefaceisee · 04/07/2022 17:10

The snobbery is alive and well on MN.
Is one only allowed to link articles and stories as happens every day on these boards to give an opinion on them if they come from the guardian or the independent?

Daily people share hideous tweets from people I dont know but I read it and join the discussion, I dont sit on my soap box and accuse them of amplifying it because it hloody should he amplified.

People might be far too high and mighty to read these things but not everything is. Teenagers are on tiktok and Facebook and watching programmes connected to these people. They are seeing people like Jesy Nelson and Jacqueline Jossa being pounded by the press over their weight. Now notice I'm not talking about people like Gemma Collins or Katie Price who have made a career out of manipulating their press, tipping them off.

But if it was your daughter, or your son, or your friend who was being splashed all over the paper in awful circumstances would you be quite as smug?

The camps seem divided- tough they deserved it and just dont read it.

Both tbe Jesy Nelson documentaries and the Caroline Flack one (the segment before Lewis, before anyone starts) talk about literal obsession with googling themselves, issues with their mental health, the most horrific stories and tweets.

I would wager 'just ignore it'or 'they deserve it's is all well and good when its not you.

SpilltheTea · 04/07/2022 17:10

If you stop clicking on tabloid shite, the algorithm on social media will stop showing it to you. It's very easy to avoid if you don't go looking for it. Tabloids will always be arseholes because some people seem to care about the crap they write about.

You're as bad as the 'news/SM'. Like many others I hadn't heard of him, didn't know he'd been to prison (obviously as I hadn't heard of him) & I've only been in the BBC today.

so YOU dragging it all through MN, is no better than their reporting.
