In the past 2 years, nursery illness has ruined

Every bank holiday bar one. Maybe 15-20 weekends? Both of DH’s birthdays. A weekend away. Too many occasions and plans to even count. I am so done with it, another weekend ruined and I just want to cry.

Really? That’s an exceptionally large number. Is your DC immuno compromised?

Feelingsillyandgiddy · 03/07/2022 16:28

Agree that is a lot. My son picked up everything until ja was about 2.5 but never to that extent. I can only think of 3 times illness stopped us doing what we had planned.

Wouldloveanother · 03/07/2022 16:29

No. I’ve been told numerous times this is normal, it’s a particularly bad couple of years for bugs since the lockdown. She’s had blood tests at my insistence and all came back fine. She’s got no medical conditions, good height and weight, eats healthily, takes a multivitamin. Im at a loss. How does anybody live a normal life with toddlers at the moment?

Louise0701 · 03/07/2022 16:30

Well I have 2 toddlers currently and I’ve an older child and I’ve never experienced anything close to what you’re claiming.
My youngest has been unwell once and that’s it. So I’ve had children in nursery for the past 8 years and 1 illness. Yours is bizarre. I would have her back at the GP. It’s definitely not normal.

Whinge · 03/07/2022 16:30

Ruined? Is your child really too unwell to take part in whatever you have planned, for example vomiting, diarrhea, contagious illness, or do they just have a cough, runny nose, sore throat etc?

Hugasauras · 03/07/2022 16:31

That does seem very extreme. We had a bad run of bugs last winter but the issue was more DH and I being ill as a result; DD brought them home but generally wasn't very unwell herself, it's just we caught them and they were much worse for us 😬

Wouldloveanother · 03/07/2022 16:32

It’s always the same - high temperature, cough. Most of the plans were missed because once she had a temp she couldn’t do anything until after a covid test, so to be fair that has to be factored in. And it has got a little bit better - she’s probably ill every 5/6 weeks now, it used to be every other week. I’m exhausted and this has ruined my mental health

I wouldn’t say normal at all. I’m always surprised how many people talk about nursery illness being common. Both my DC had the odd snotty nose and chicken pox, one mild vomit thing each, but nothing else. They both went from the age of 6 months to two different childminders and two different nurseries, 5 years apart.

Louise0701 · 03/07/2022 16:33

You don’t stop all your plans and class birthdays as ruined for a cough though, surely?

Batceanera · 03/07/2022 16:34

DC never had a full month in nursery. They day DS left, he came home with chicken pox.

Every illness meant a 48 hour ban, we still had to pay of course. Work offered one day special leave to sort out emergency childcare. We have absolutely no-one to help with childcare.

Wouldloveanother · 03/07/2022 16:34

The cough always comes with a high temperature - she rarely JUST has a cough or snotty nose by itself, if you see what I mean. It always comes with a high temperature and her being tired/cranky.

I think the high temp/covid test thing was rubbish as you had to have test for just normal high temps.

But apart from that that is a huge amount of sickness. Also, depending on what 'illness' is etc,not everything stops plans.

Colds/coughs etc we carry on as usual, we would only stay home for a full blown high temp. If DD is happy in herself we wouldn't cancel plans

Hugasauras · 03/07/2022 16:35

I think some kids are particularly prone to temperatures. DD has never had one but one of her little pals gets one a couple of times a month without fail. Makes it tricky though for sending to nursery.

Glittertwins · 03/07/2022 16:35

That sounds abnormal- are you counting every sneeze or something? We had twins in nursery so double the opportunity. Two counts each of norovirus in 4 years.

Glittertwins · 03/07/2022 16:35

And chicken pox each. That's it

Allaboutthecheesecake · 03/07/2022 16:36

My toddler is the same unwell at least every other week , me and partner are unwell too , it’s the bug factory that is nursery.

Wouldloveanother · 03/07/2022 16:38

I’m very seriously considering handing in my notice, just because of this. I can’t cope anymore and the career I’ve worked so hard for is going down the toilet because I’m hardly ever in. I’m going to end up with a disciplinary anwyay

I never even thought about this when I became a mum
its ruined the last 2 years of my life

Why don’t you move them to a childminder if it’s really that bad?

Beees · 03/07/2022 16:41

The problem is your child has a poor immune system I'm afraid this is not the nursery's fault and it would have happened regardless of when she started mixing with other children.

As someone with a snotty toddler he gets ill occasionally but nothing major and certainly nothing that would stop our plans except for when he caught chicken pox.

Does your child take vitamins?

We tried, there are very few with spaces in this area. Most can only do part time, the only one that had a full time space wasn’t a very safe or clean setting

Yes she does
she has a great diet - meat, chicken, oily fish, fresh veg, wholewheat bread/pasta etc. She eats all of it
she had a very comprehensive blood test which was all fine - no deficiencies, thyroid, anaemia etc

Yes! We've had the same. It has got A LOT less in the last 3 months so I hope things settle down for you.

Thanks
we’ve had 3 episodes of illness in 3 months which is a record for us
but we had such a great day planned and it’s been ruined again and I’m sat here cryinG
i hope things continue to pick up for you, it’s miserable

OP you've not answered really what the illnesses are that are stopping all your plans? As others have said, a lot of coughs/colds/temps if they can be controlled by calpol etc then plans continue
