Prom Queen??? Really??

My niece was voted Prom Queen. She is a really lovely girl, kind and clever, and I wrote something lovely on the FB post.
But, come on. Why are schools promoting this nonsense? I'm not objecting because it's an American idea, and not because its aimed at girls (there was a Prom King...and a Prom prince); but because it's completely unnecessary and about as relevant as Miss World. They could have had a fun celebration in fancy clothes for everyone, without having to run an outdated "popularity contest" pitting children against each other.

Oh, for the end of school disco of 30-odd years ago ... held in a crappy pub, we all wore jeans, the cool ones smoked openly as it was legal for 16 year olds then, and sneaked in booze (teachers turned a blind eye). I was a wallflower with my geeky mates but I did win a prize in the raffle😁

They vote for other awards too. Most likely to become a millionaire. Most likely to become famous. Most likely to win a top sports award etc.

Who’s going to be brave enough to tell their DD “In my opinion the whole idea of prom is ridiculous.
I will not contribute any money towards it. It’s up to you to fund it yourself. “

"Proms" are stupid and should be banned. We aren't America and I hope we never are.

PandorasBoxers · 14/07/2023 12:59

Our school had a prom queen and prom princess. but the Queen was the teacher who did most of the work organising the dinner and dance, and the Princess was the student who had organised most of it

So in that scenario, I think it’s really sweet to make a fuss of the people that organised a lovely night

@Florenz

Proms are not solely American, you know, so you can maybe wind your anti American neck in a bit.

Irish schools have held 'debs' (short for debutantes) balls for decades. They are full on formal dinner dances for school leavers at age 18 (when the majority of Irish students leave secondary ed). And as seen here there are plenty of British schools that have held formal school leaver events for decades too.

Many of the the British 'proms' described here on MN are unrecognisable from either the American ones or the Irish debs balls.

It's not really a new thing. I left school in 2007 and we had a prom with a prom king and queen. My sister also had a prom with king and queen in 2003.

Wish people would get over it now. This time every year there are countless threads about how ridiculous prom is blah blah blah 🙄

It basically is the school disco at the end of term. Which happened in my day and I’m nearly 50!

Yep.just a bit more glamorous!
I'm also.nearly 50
When i.left schoo!.we had a "leavers do." at a,restaurant and a bit of a,disco.after we didn't go.all out with the dresses and nails etc like they do now but it wasn't to dissimilar to today's "Prom"

fuchiaknickers · 14/07/2023 16:33

Yuck!
And no it’s not “fun”. At least not for everyone.
The party is fun, the food and the dancing and the music and the photos and signing everyone’s leaving books is fun.

Picking out two people as “the best” does not sound very fun (unless of course you’re in the running to be picked, obvs 🙄)
