6 year old dd wants to dye her hair!

So, she's asked several times to do it. Any recommendations as to what to use on her blonde/brown hair colour?

Any reasons I shouldn't do it? If it's an I judge reason I'm not bothered, more checking in if it's not worth it because it won't last/make a difference etc.

I hadn't realised it was such a slippery slope! Tbf she has commented on my tattoo so I may need to get suggestions on how to do this as safely as possible, I just can't say no to her!!!!

I just wanted a safe/non chemical/non permanent/ won't ruin her childhood or adulthood/won't turn her into a spoilt brat/won't destroy our parent and child relationship suggestion.

😂😂You are quite funny OP. If you can't say no to your dd, she will become a spoilt brat. Kids need boundaries. But sure, do go ahead and let her have tattoos and artificial hair, your kid your rulz😂

🙄I'm so concerned how some people make it through a day! Don't worry, there were about 2 others who thought i was serious about letting her have a tattoo 😂

I hope most people saw it was in reply to the letting her dip dye her hair in natural oils was akin to setting her up for a life of entitlement brigade!

I’d say chalks are the way to go. Like others I think it’s a bit too young for anything semi perm but you’ve made your choice. Main reason for chalks would be that 6yos are fickle beasts. Mine asked for blue and then freaked out because her friend had pink and then wanted the pink too. With the chalks it was easy to faff around for a day and then wash out.

Im probably more wary than most about dye in general though as my best friend growing up ruined her hair- granted that was bleaching and hair straightening but by about 12/13 her hair was like straw and breaking off.

@Sometimeswinning 🙄I'm so concerned how some people make it through a day!

No need to concern yourself with how other adults make it through the day, focus on yourself and your dd 😏 Sounds like you are having lots of fun accessorising her 🙌! Different strokes for different folks.

I haven't read the full thread so not sure if it's been suggested but I'd get a hairdresser to do a temporary dye and gloss treatment. Better than risking one not washing out. The earlier suggestion of dying the end and cutting it off is the only thing I'd do at home.

When I lived in a shared house my housemate left a bottle of electric blue crazy colour in the shower. It was the same size as my olaplex bottle and I picked up the wrong one. It's semi permanent but after a weekend of washing and conditioning I couldn't get it out. I had to get a box dye to cover it up before going back to work on Monday. I learned to check the shower for rogue bottles that weren't mine after that.

Hey OP have you thought about colourful clip ins? My daughter wanted bright hair but her hair is dark so anything temp could look muddy but she loves the clip ins.

liveforsummer · 04/07/2022 08:48

Agree blue/green can really hang about on fairer hair. Pinks and purples come out far quicker. Dd loves to do hers read in the summer - we use manic panic. No toxic chemicals and hardly a comparison to @KosherDill rather wild comparisons 😆

Greenkitten · 04/07/2022 18:04

@WinterMusings
No! I promise I didn’t dye my cat green! It was a white cat and the idiot rolled around on a freshly cut lawn. The stupid thing looked tie dyed! Darling cat- but very very dim.

s0fi · 04/07/2022 21:48

@KosherDill your being extremely dramatic.

Aria999 · 05/07/2022 00:46

OP I think you need to start putting (that was a joke) when you make one. The deadpan is bouncing off some posters 🤣

Marvellousmadness · 05/07/2022 03:29

You have to compromise by dyeing her hair cuz she wanted her ears pierced and you said no?

Hahah when are you going to start parenting and learn to say no (without tedious compromises)
You say you don't want her to be a compliant little robot. Probably because you are already one...

MrsMonkeyBear · 05/07/2022 04:22

I use the coloured conditioners on my eldest hair and have done since she was about 4. We've used Manic Panic, Bleach London and Revolution for Hair and just done the underneath or the ends. I've never bleached her hair and never will.

Her hair is dark, so tend to stick to darker colours. I do avoid green and blue as they stay in the hair for ages.

sashh · 05/07/2022 04:42

Hair chalks or food colouring I don't see a problem.

annlee3817 · 05/07/2022 05:25

We used the Crazy colour temp hair dye, my hairdresser did it for my DD at the same age and gave us the rest of the bottle if we wanted to do it again, was marshmallow pink the one that we used. I did both our hair, was fun to do during lock down.

She said that she wouldn't recommend blue or green on virgin hair as it can leave a permanent tinge until it grows out.

RonObvious · 05/07/2022 06:13

We've also used Manic Panic, but the colours vary so much! Some hardly show, and others are really vivd and stick around for ever. And, like a PP said, some of them will dye everything they touch, Don't use blue, as it will go green (unless your hair is bleached). I started with streaks for my daughter, which actually gives a simular effect to an all over colour. I've also just dyed the underneath of her hair before, giving her the option of pretty much hiding the colour.

Trust me, lesson learnt 😂

I have used manic panic pink in dd and we had to get it cut out. She seems to have inherited my porous hair plus she's bright blonde.

I also used a green spray at Halloween on t'other dd. That took multiple washes with head and shoulders and even then she had a tinge until she went swimming and the chlorine shifted it.

😂😂😂

Good to know 😀

L'Oreal Colourista Wash out really does wash out after one wash. My 5 year old used the bright pink on her very light blonde hair and I was very surprised at how it disappeared!

summershort · 05/07/2022 21:59

I dip dyed my daughters hair at the start of the first lockdown, she was 6. I used directions semi permanent dye off Amazon. It lasted about about 4 weeks till it had totally faded. I then did it again February 2021 in lockdown and this time it was a much brighter colour, it was a good 2 months before it had totally faded.

She has asked if she can have it done again and we will be doing it again at the start of the holidays. For me it’s a not a case of not wanting to say no, I have no problem with her having her done, it’s just hair, I say no to other stuff and she accepts it, but this I can’t see a problem with.

chrissypissy · 06/07/2022 14:00

I concur. As long as it's not during school term and will wash out and does not contain chemicals, what's the harm. Isn't childhood about having fun and experiences (within boundaries of course)

liveforsummer · 06/07/2022 14:03

Why not during school term? I see plenty dc with coloured hair at all times of year.

Steelesauce · 06/07/2022 14:29

My 4 year old has hair chalk and has different coloured hair all the time. She is very blonde though so they all look bright on her hair.

Be careful putting dye on if she's got red/copper in hair naturally though. I'm a red head and lots of dyes do not come out the colour expected on my hair. Blondes are always green or orange, anything darker usually comes out a mucky purple/black.

School law often have strict policies about dyed hair colour being only natural shades.

CandyLeBonBon · 06/07/2022 19:34

Schools not school law

So pleased you posted about this. My 10yr DS has been mithering for blue or pink hair for ages. I've tried hair chalk but really don't like them, they seem to take ages to get into his hair and he can't sit still for that long.

I've just ordered crazy colour pastel sprays to use as soon as he finishes school in blue and coral. He's a dark blonde so will start just doing the ends that could be cut out before going back to school.
