6 year old dd wants to dye her hair!

So, she's asked several times to do it. Any recommendations as to what to use on her blonde/brown hair colour?

Any reasons I shouldn't do it? If it's an I judge reason I'm not bothered, more checking in if it's not worth it because it won't last/make a difference etc.

I let my dd dye her hair with a Superdrug blue dye in the holidays between year 1 and 2. She has white blonde hair. Said on the box it would wash out in 6-8 washes. Nope. Went green. Was still a bit green at Christmas! I tried dye remover, washing up liquid, head and shoulders….everything! It even survived the dreaded bit shampoo. Luckily the school were very understanding!

Greenkitten · 03/07/2022 19:42

bit shampoo= nit shampoo

JemimaTheClimber · 03/07/2022 19:47

Whatever you decide to use you need to do two things

Do a patch test to make sure she isn't allergic to whatever you are putting on her hair

Take a small section of hair, apply the colour to it and then see how long it takes to wash out.

Depending on your primary school they may have a uniform code that says no unnatural colours so whatever you colour you might need to be prepared to chop off.

We dip dyed dc hair summer 2020 then cut off the bottoms before school in September. They were 8 and 12. Dd is now 14 and just dyed her hair copper. Her friends were shocked I let her… no idea why as my hair is bright red and I’ve dyed it on and off since 14. It’s hair, it’s not permanent.

@KosherDill always someone on aibu I guess!

I'll bite. My 6 year old can ask. I won't say no until I've explored different ideas. I will not be highlighting her hair. I want to know if there is an appropriate way she can change the colour of her hair for the summer .

I'm not buying hair dye of the shelf 😂Sorry I realise I should have said this in my op!

i bought temporary dye at the drug store

lasted a few months my daughter was thrilled.

my immediate reaction was no, but when I thought about it I had zero valid reason for that.

my youngest daughter got a pink spray in that lasted a week as the Maroon wasn’t good for her hair colour

@KosherDill EXACTLY. My little girl dyed her hair for the summer holidays. I wasn’t keen but was weak so let her. Next thing you know she was begging for an IUD, and by then I felt I couldn’t say no. Especially as she was drinking so much wine by 8.

I hadn't realised it was such a slippery slope! Tbf she has commented on my tattoo so I may need to get suggestions on how to do this as safely as possible, I just can't say no to her!!!!

I just wanted a safe/non chemical/non permanent/ won't ruin her childhood or adulthood/won't turn her into a spoilt brat/won't destroy our parent and child relationship suggestion.

I’ve done temporary tattoos, glitter tattoos on my children.

This photo is the glitter tattoo

But, you are coming across as a big wet OP

”I can’t say no to her”. Well yes you can. If you need to.

A teacher at my school did that once! She'd done it for a fancy dress thing,

poor thing! MONTHS of ribbing by teachers & kids alike! (& this was in the late 80's when these things weren't so common!)?

@Greenkitten

You didn't dye your cat blue did you??

I can't even go into this 😂my dd isn't really asking for a tattoo. I was being sarcastic. I really need to put a disclaimer for all my comments don't I?? Don't worry I've heard of glitter tattoos. You don't have 3 children and miss this little gem!

Disclaimer: This is NOT a dig at anyone who does not have 3 children, I completely know that all people childfree or otherwise have heard of these.

We have dyed our kids hair for a few years now during the summer holidays. If you do it at the beginning with a wash in/out one it will have faded by the end
Sometimes just dye the ends, what ever they fancy. Any left over bits get trimmed for school in September.
During lockdown we did it quite frequently.
It a fun thing to do in the holidays. We all do it in the garden and and it's a cool activity.
Make sure she knows it doesn't always go right!

No. Is there something wrong with the colour of her natural hair? No of course there isn't.

Bet you're fun at parties

gah2teenagers · 03/07/2022 23:51

Jesus just say no. This is just the start of her being unsatisfied with her appearance. Eyebrows and Lip fillers next.

Yep, pink hair dye at 6 is a well known gateway to lip filler by 10. For goodness sake, the hand wringing on this thread is ridiculous.

FWIW OP, I have dip dyed my DD's very long blonde hair pink a few times when she was about 7 or 8 and she's now 11 and as yet has not resorted to tattoos, ruining her eyebrows or injecting things into her face. In fact, she hasn't even shown any interest in makeup.

LondonQueen · 04/07/2022 00:10

I did my DD's pink for her birthday party, just the washout stuff but she loved it with her princess outfit. It made her happy so why not?

Sarahzb · 04/07/2022 00:12

You can get chalk colours that will wash out. I would not be letting a child have harmful chemichals on her scalp

IWishIWasABaller · 04/07/2022 00:16

We are getting my daughter's hair dip dyed this week . Tried chalks and coloured hairsprays but due to her dark hair they didn't work. Hairdresser will dip dye the ends a bright color and come September she will get the coloured ends cut off . Don't think it's a big deal just something fun for the summer

Whatup · 04/07/2022 00:20

I used to colour in my hair with a felt tip pen my dad was soo worried about toxic chemicals he brought me some purple hairspray.

Whatup · 04/07/2022 00:21

Id give her some clip in hair extensions then she can experiment and see whether she likes it.

It's sad that women still are raising their daughters to be obsessed with their appearance. At little more than toddler age.

mathanxiety · 04/07/2022 03:52

Lots of little boys are sporting dyed hair these days too.

Savingpeoplehuntingthings · 02/07/2022 23:43

Get something like Manic Panic dye, it's temporary , lasts around six weeks and is a vegetable dye. It's really bright colours, they take best on lighter hair.

Be very careful with this. I used the neon green one on my daughter and I've managed to stain our grout, the toilet lid, the door frame and I've had to replace the shower curtain.

It was an expensive expression of individualism.
Confused

😂😂You are quite funny OP. If you can't say no to your dd, she will become a spoilt brat. Kids need boundaries. But sure, do go ahead and let her have tattoos and artificial hair, your kid your rulz😂

trailrunner85 · 04/07/2022 07:33

Obvs you need to learn to say no to your daughter.

But, that said, I have a DD the same age who loves dyeing her hair. I won't let chemicals anywhere near it as imo she's too young, but we have one of those Fab Lab kits with different coloured chalks. Lots of fun. See also Fab Lab glitter tattoos.

CandyLeBonBon · 04/07/2022 07:37

Omg this thread!! So many people completely missing the sarcasm!

I have done this on and off with my dd in the holidays over the years with varying success (dark blond hair). Purples worked better and washed out easily and Superdrug do some great products exactly for this purpose! Have fun op, and fingers crossed it doesn't turn dd into a wine-swilling, tattoo-wearing plump-lipped hooligan OP!
