6 year old dd wants to dye her hair!

So, she's asked several times to do it. Any recommendations as to what to use on her blonde/brown hair colour?

Any reasons I shouldn't do it? If it's an I judge reason I'm not bothered, more checking in if it's not worth it because it won't last/make a difference etc.

No need to compromise. A simple no is all that's needed.

For your children maybe. I'm all for her having a chance to express herself. It doesn't effect me what colour her hair is.

The dip dyeing and Manic Panic suggestions are brilliant! Thankyou. Roll on the holidays!

There are the spray in colours you can get in places like Claire's

Soubriquet · 03/07/2022 08:31

What about crepe paper dye?

I did this with my dd when she was 7

I saw something that if you can find Cool Aid (the American drink) it’s so pigmented it dyes their hair for a week or so but fades in the wash.

MynameisJune · 03/07/2022 08:38

DD1 is 6.5, we dyed her hair last summer holidays, I used a purple temp dye from Sally’s but it didn’t take in her hair at all. She hasn’t asked this year but I’d do it again if she wanted. She’s having her ears pierced this year as she has asked, is aware that it will hurt and that she needs to take care of them.

I’d try Manic panic in a pink colour simply because I know people who’ve had the blues/purples and they’re a lot harder to get out.

Soubriquet · 03/07/2022 08:40

Dd is having her ears pierced this year too.

Shes 9 and very keen to have it done. So we said we will do it for the summer holidays

I wouldn’t even entertain the idea at 6. Come back in at least 4yrs and ask. A simple no when she mentions it, you’re too young.

BeyondMyWits · 03/07/2022 09:47

Would just read the reviews of any products. We didn't and dip dyed dds hair when she was 12. It dried the hair soooooo much she started to get split ends and absolutely hated that look, so we had to cut it. It was there in the reviews...

I don't know why but this made me laugh!

My poor 6 year old asking why and I just keep simply replying no, come back in 4 years 😂

I don't think you should say no if you can't justify why you're saying no.

MajorCarolDanvers · 03/07/2022 09:52

I'd let her have a wash in wash out during the school holidays

skgnome · 03/07/2022 09:59

Manic panic or crepe paper
i would just do the tips… or bottom layer
a friend did red manic panic once for Christmas and ended up with red hair all the way to March
but if she has long hair I would say go crazy with the tips and worst case she can rock a bob haircut for the next school year

TeresaBlue · 03/07/2022 10:02

I wouldn't allow a 6 year old to 'properly' dye their hair - as in an all over colour, to the roots. It's just too much at 6 imo.

However if she has long hair, a dip dye in a bright colour is fun, effective and can be cut off at the end of August. I can't see why people would have a shit fit over that!

I gave myself a dip dye at 16. Literally bleached the end two inches with household bleach then used a bright pink box dye over the top 😂. How I didn't just burn my hair off ill never know but it actually turned out pretty well!

zingally · 03/07/2022 10:05

I wouldn't have a problem with one of those temporary dyes in a fun colour for the summer. But I'd say no to a full head of colour changing her natural colour to another "natural" colour - if the only reason was that she didn't like her natural colour.
I quite often have swathes of pink or purple in my hair. Especially in the depths of winter when a pop of colour is fun.

Cloudyvintage · 03/07/2022 10:07

DD had some decent hair chalks from Amazon which work really well and they wash out so she can change it however she likes. The colour sprays also work well loads of children use them on crazy hair day at school.

Personally I wouldn't dye her hair permanently or with a semi, if she hated it or she changed her mind afterwards that's a lot of hassle to correct. Depending on the length of her hair discuss with her what would happen if it went wrong, would she be happy to have it cut short?

Nothing. She's six.

The answer is no you are not old enough. The end of discussion.

You are opening yourself up to a problem because when she's older this will be done and she won't feel she's growing up.

No is an acceptable answer here and you are really quite mad to consider a different one.

detectora · 03/07/2022 10:10

Stick with hair chalk. There were numerous posts online last summer from parents panicking that ‘temporary’ dyes weren’t coming out of their DCs hair in time for school.

The worrying thing is you don't think you can say no. And you think shes a poor hard done by darling for you saying no you aren't old enough because she needs a better explanation than 'because you aren't old enough'.

Its a perfectly fine answer to a 6 year old.

I wouldn't use it on a teenager in the same way, but a six year old?

Nope thats just creating a spoilt brat and you abdicating the responsibility of saying no. You are pretending to yourself that you can not say no because its easier now to be her friend rather than her parent.

Be her parent. 'No' is an important boundary to make at this age.

HerTableLaid · 03/07/2022 10:13

DS, who just turned ten, has had pink hair since about March, via those spray-on colours, I think from Claire’s Accessories.

He’s at the kind of school where this isn’t an issue.

MrsPnut · 03/07/2022 10:18

DD had a turquoise stripe at about the same age. We used Punky colours dye but it did last well into the new school year.

The dip dye is a great idea, and many of the semi permanent vegetable based dyes don’t damage the hair.

Skinterior · 03/07/2022 10:19

Oh my goodness, it's hair. It grows.

A box of hair chalk and everyone is happy.

Except for the people that clearly believe allowing your children to colour their hair is the work of the devil.

Confused

I disagree. I'm bringing up a person who doesn't need to be a complient little robot. She can question things. I think your idea of parenting is a bit archaic for me.

Arctic fox hair dye is great! Avoid blues and greens as they take longer to wash out. My kids dye their hair every summer.

Frankincense88 · 03/07/2022 10:26

The hair drops from 'Shrine' are really good. Come in a range of colours and it's a small bottle of drops you add to hair conditioner rather than a dye. You can control how many drops of colour you add depending on how intense you want the colour and they wash out in 3-30 washes (again depending on how many drops you apply!) I'm a teacher but like to have pastel pink / lilac hair in the holidays and they always wash out! 😂
