So, she's asked several times to do it. Any recommendations as to what to use on her blonde/brown hair colour?

Any reasons I shouldn't do it? If it's an I judge reason I'm not bothered, more checking in if it's not worth it because it won't last/make a difference etc.

DD had pink conditioner put in her hair by the hairdresser. Looked cute, washed out in a couple of washes. Temporary chalks, conditioner's wash out really easy.
Dip dying the ends seems like a good idea. Keeps the chemicals away from her skin and can be trimmed off if necessary.

You can get some really good semi permanent, wash in/wash out ones.
When I was younger my mum got some for me, although don't think I was 6 possibly 11/12. But there weren't many options back then, now there are so many options and I absolutely loved it.

When my DS was 9 he had a mohican for the summer hols and I bleached it. He looked awesome 😄 He's now in his 20s with a very boring man haircut and a beard. I miss the mohican days 😄😄😄

Look op, bottom line is, using henna or dyes early makes a later severe allergy extremely likely.
So is your daughter likely to thank you for letting her dye her hair when she's six, at the potential risk of her not being able to have highlights or dye her hair as a teen or adult?
Hold fire. Get hair chalks or clip ins.
You also need to consider if you dye her hair wacky colours in future that some schools, rightly or wrongly, have strict rules regarding hair. So dying in the long summer holiday or checking first is best unless you aspire to daily mail sadface article.

I’d recommend coloured hair wax as it washes out easily. You can create either a deeper or pastel effect. I use the wax on my naturally white hair! Smile

My 9 year old DS often uses the sprays from Superdrug over school holidays. He has tried the pink, red, blue, green and white. He absolutely loves them. They wash out easily Word of warning though they do run in the rain!

Get her some coloured clip in extensions, much easier, she can swap and change colours whenever she feels like it

Maybe read through all the thread before laying down your bottom line!

Loving all the helpful suggestions and pictures! I was thinking chalk at the start of all this. Thinking I may do my tips now and the rest of my children if they want. (Disclaimer, they are both older and if they say they don't want it I will respect that)

Be very careful of temporary hair dye - my son’s friend used a temp red on his blonde hair that was supposed to wash out easily and ended up with apricot coloured hair for weeks. He was not a happy bunny. Spray, clip in colours or colour on the ends only would give you peace of mind if you’re happy to allow it.

@KosherDill always someone on aibu I guess!

I'll bite. My 6 year old can ask. I won't say no until I've explored different ideas. I will not be highlighting her hair. I want to know if there is an appropriate way she can change the colour of her hair for the summer .

I'm not buying hair dye of the shelf 😂Sorry I realise I should have said this in my op!

There is. My daughters and I had a tradition when they were at school. On the last day of the summer term I would dip dye the bottom of their hair whatever wacky colour they chose with a semi permanent colour. If it hadn’t rinsed out by the time they went back it was usually removed in the annual trim.

Yeah I would. There are sprays/wash in wash out products you can use

I did my DDs at the beginning of first lock down using a red dye on the bottom. She would have been year 3

My daughter is 10, and she has been asking me for this a few times now. I stand by my belief that it is not something that children should be doing. If it's chalk ones, or spray in ones that come out in a day, then I think it's fine to let them experiment with their appearance, but putting chemicals in my daughter's hair is not something I can accept.

Dip.dye the ends is a great idea, so if it doesn't wash out you can just cut it off before school starts again in September. Highly recommend Manic panic, although as other have said blue based colours will stick alot longer. Another alternative is coloured.hair.due-you can go for just. A section, highlights or the whole head, and it washes straight out. www.amazon.co.uk/Qlan-Grandma-Nightclub-Temporary-Modeling/dp/B078M671KH/ref=mp_s_a_1_2_sspa?crid=V5X2VCVQR3UF&keywords=coloured%20hair%20wax%20for%20kids&qid=1656871744&sprefix=coloured%20hair%20wax%2Caps%2C1570&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExMkJNOFlLVlZVSEtWJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMDE0MjAzMUxQR0xNRjVHTTFaSSZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMDA4NzEwMTZBNDZHRUo4NDRKUiZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX3Bob25lX3NlYXJjaF9hdGYmYWN0aW9uPWNsaWNrUmVkaXJlY3QmZG9Ob3RMb2dDbGljaz10cnVl&tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21

@KosherDill EXACTLY. My little girl dyed her hair for the summer holidays. I wasn’t keen but was weak so let her. Next thing you know she was begging for an IUD, and by then I felt I couldn’t say no. Especially as she was drinking so much wine by 8.

I allow my kids to express themselves during the summer holidays.

Last year, they both chose to have a blue temporary hair dye put in their hair. Yes, it was a pain in the arse to wash out but they were happy and it doesn’t hurt then to have it done once a year. I did a skin test and I’ll do the same again this year

Just to add, my kids are 7 and 9 now. They would have been 6 and 8 then

Do it!
you can get temp colours that are fine that doesn't damage the hair.
I love crazy colours, i use them regularly. Great range, don’t last long and no damage to the hair

I didn't like the chalks as were very sticky but the clip in hair was very vibrant and gives a similar look.

I second the wax to see if she likes it- we have several colours from a festival last year.
can get a really good colour on my daughter’s bright red hair, washes out ok one wash.

Dear lord, some people on here ! I wouldn't do anything permanent to my child like tattoos or piercings but hair dye ? Crack on ! It's just hair, worst case scenario it'll grow back (may be an opportunity to try a cute pixie cut). Just pick something that will wash out and without chemicals. If she likes red, henne can be a good natural option.

And if it doesn't wash out then it's a good life lesson that you should think before changing your body (obviously warn her before hand that she might not get her natural colour back before her hair grows out again).

But I believe henne usually washes out after a few months.

Let her dye it for the summer holidays and then back to normal for school. It will be fun for her.

Ideas on how to do this conservamome.com/awesome-ways-to-color-your-kids-hair-without-permanent-dye/

Go for it, but I’d only use products that deposit colour only - rather than processing her hair which is more damaging. Manic panic are good. Arctic fox may be good too.

Its not so easy to have fun with your hair as an adult if it doesn’t fit in you’re professional role so I’m all for going wild with your hair while young. You’ve got all adulthood to be sensible! Just make sure she’s not going to fall foul of any school rules if it’s still in her hair after the holidays!
