To not give something away to someone without manners?

Put something on FB for free.

Man comments 'I can pick it up now'

Sends DM asking for address.
. No please or thankyou. Brand new, sealed item that would be £25 ish.

AIBU to wait and see if anyone else messages and at leasts uses manners?

Up to you really. Most people just want rid of their stuff.

Wouldloveanother · 01/07/2022 18:45

I know what you mean. Yes I want to give away my stuff but I’m still irked by lack of manners. It’s worse when they don’t say please or thank you then ask you to drive it to them!

Cas112 · 01/07/2022 18:46

Yes it would piss me off and I would probably wait for another interested to come up. Hate people with no manners, so rude

Underscore21 · 01/07/2022 18:48

I agree but it might be one of those generic FB marketplace responses that you just click on?

bloodyunicorns · 01/07/2022 18:48

I'd donate it to a charity shop.

I definitely choose polite people over rude ones when giving away things on Freecycle.

oiffs · 01/07/2022 18:48

I had the same recently and then she said "but I don't drive". She lived half an hour away but wanted me to deliver a free item to her. Entitled rude twats. I blocked her and gave it to someone who had manners.

woodhill · 01/07/2022 18:49

Just rude, give it to a charity shop

Pixiedust1234 · 01/07/2022 18:50

I wouldn't want to either. Would rather give it to charity or the bin. If they message again asking for your address reply back with "whats the magic word?" 😂😂

Although they could just tell you to go forth and multiply, depends if you don't care if they do.

Pumperthepumper · 01/07/2022 18:50

Maybe they have English as a second language? Maybe they have poor literacy? Maybe they are depressed and the thought of typing up a super polite message is beyond them?

MeridianB · 01/07/2022 18:51

So many people share horror stories of giving away freebies. It can attract grabby, rude people. Charity shop would be better.

True, but I'd like to think most people value good manners too... absence of 'please' and 'thank you' would put my back up too.

Stichintime · 01/07/2022 18:51

If you're sure English is their first language, then give it to someone with manners.

RandomUsernameHere · 01/07/2022 18:54

YANBU I'd wait for someone more polite to message, which I'm sure they will

Always someone with excuses for shitty rude behaviour on Mumsnet.

Some people are just rude and entitled twats. If you are potentially getting something completely free, just be polite.

JaneJeffer · 01/07/2022 18:58

Ask him what's the magic word.

megletthesecond · 01/07/2022 18:58

IME the rude people never turn up anyway. Their cats, aunties, best mate usually has a crisis that means they go awol Hmm.....

butterflied · 01/07/2022 18:58

I honestly wouldn't care. What pisses me off are people who say they want the stuff and then don't pick it up. As long as he takes it off me, I'm not too bothered.

ChangedForThisCause · 01/07/2022 18:58

When you learn a new language isn't one of the basics please and thankyou.

Do you really think he can type 'I can pick it up now/what's the address'

But doesn't know how to say Thankyou in English? 🙄

And I'm depressed. Severely so. But I can say thankyou at the end of a message.

It's a dog item and a dog rescue group is coming to collect now

Ironically, your message is rude. Is English your first language?

Please and thank you are one of the basics when learning English. But not nuance ie when to use them. So you’re not taught to use them at the end of every sentence when you’re asking for stuff or replying to a question.

And learning difficulties?

Lindy2 · 01/07/2022 19:02

I tend to ignore the messages from anyone who doesn't use please and thank you.

I once had a messages that just said "postcode?" They didn't even ask if the item was still available. I ignored them.

If it's free and worth £25 another, hopefully more grateful, person will very likely be along soon.

ChangedForThisCause · 01/07/2022 19:05

Mumsnet is so funny.

Everyone is foreign/has learning disabilities/might have just lost their nanas cat in a serious road traffic accident rather than just being a rude nob 😂

Yes it's going to a dog rescue now :)

Surely it’s weirder to only give out free stuff so long as the person can display an adequate amount of (English!) literacy, otherwise you’ll call them names on the internet?

hattie43 · 01/07/2022 19:07

I wouldn't give it away either to someone being rude .

I offered a large ceramic planter free on marketplace and a woman said she'd have it , she then didn't respond when I asked when she could collect . Four days later she turned up on the doorstep unannounced . I told her hubby had broken it and it was no longer useable . We took it to the tip in the end .
