Put something on FB for free.

Man comments 'I can pick it up now'

Sends DM asking for address.
. No please or thankyou. Brand new, sealed item that would be £25 ish.

AIBU to wait and see if anyone else messages and at leasts uses manners?

Those saying they may not know how to use please/thankyou properly as it's a 2nd language.

Please can I collect this
Can please I collect this.
Can I please collect this.
Can I collect please this.
Can I collect this please.

Literally doesn't matter where you put the 'please' to convey you would like to take the item and show some manners. The reader can understand the sentence and the manners.

Even my illiterate grandmother for whom English is a 3rd language and has never had any formal lessons knows how to say please.
She may put it in the wrong place but she says it.

Most languages have an equivalent, so people would know something was missing. They wouldn’t just barge in.

Stop insulting those of us who speak multiple languages and comparing us to rude **s.

@JiggleJiggleFold sorry wronf message! I meant to reply to PP before you who said they don’t know where to put it!

I answered a "wanted" post on freecycle and gave a load of hardly used baby stuff away. I even delivered it. When I arrived the woman answered the door and aggressively asked "WHO ARE YOU?!" but I politely explained and carried all the stuff upstairs to her flat. Then I realised she had literally nothing and was 7 months pregnant so I offered her more things and arranged a time to bring them. She didn't even answer the door that time so I ended up leaving everything in the stairwell.
At the time I felt like I was doing a good deed, but since then I have just felt like a total mug!!

Maybe they have English as a second language? Maybe they have poor literacy? Maybe they are depressed and the thought of typing up a super polite message is beyond them?

Not the OP's problem.

Plus learning please and thank you, in any language, is about the third and fourth word you learn when studying a new language!

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 02/07/2022 10:26

My response would be "Sorry, it's already gone!"

I put a load of cine equipment on Freecycle. I had two extremes of replies - "I guess I can take it off your hands - what's your address?" and "I am an enthusiast and have been searching for that particular thing for a long while. Unfortunately I would not be able to collect it until after this date." You can guess which one I chose!

Well, it is if she’s unable to get rid of stuff from her house unless people can display a standard of literacy she deems appropriate.

If you think 'super polite' means please and thank you, well you're wrong. That's basic manners.

sunglassesonthetable · 02/07/2022 10:38

I've mostly only had people answering in an ordinary and polite way when I've given stuff away. The rude ones were the people doing it on a sort of 'professional' basis.

I wanted rid of the stuff so they had it, but it left a bad taste tbh.

I tend to ignore the messages from anyone who doesn't use please and thank you.

I once had a messages that just said "postcode?" They didn't even ask if the item was still available. I ignored them.

If it's free and worth £25 another, hopefully more grateful, person will very likely be along soon.

I'd have replied 'manners?'

wow. Don't blame you.

Pumperthepumper · 02/07/2022 10:55

I think your world view must be very narrow if the idea that people 1) don’t always have English as a first language or 2) struggle with literacy is so laughable to so many people.

I already explained upthread why it’s not just as simple as learning three words, it takes ages to learn nuance and context in a new language.

I’d rather be tiresome than ignorant, tbh.

BigCheeseSandwich · 02/07/2022 11:04

The poster bending over backwards to excuse a fictional non English speaker struggling with nuance is cracking me up 😂

lollipoprainbow · 02/07/2022 11:08

No way ! Our local free Facebook page rules asks for a 'yes please' only and the rules state no direct messages or sob stories!!

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 02/07/2022 11:11

Luckily for you, you haven’t got to make the choice.

Rubbish. If you have the sense and ability to look for free items on the internet, you know how to use the most basic of language/could find out how to say something.

Rubbish. Particularly when English doesn’t have a formalised version in the same way Spanish and French does, it’s very easy to make mistakes under the vague heading of ‘polite’. So if it’s polite to say please once in a sentence, saying it four or five times must therefore be SUPER polite. But it isn’t, because then it looks sarcastic. These subtleties take ages to learn.

balalake · 02/07/2022 11:32

Reasonable to wait. If you then give it to someone else, tell them why.

balalake · 02/07/2022 11:32

Or should I say, please tell them why.

MappyDappy · 02/07/2022 11:58

My favourite was the lady who said "I can collect now." it was 11pm! And she was most affronted when I said that it wasn't convienient!

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 02/07/2022 12:02

I realise I'm possibly cutting off my nose to spite my face but when selling stuff on, say Vinted, I'd rather not sell and give an item to charity than sell to a rude bugger who sends me a ridiculous offer Confused

pinkyredrose · 02/07/2022 12:09

Pumperthepumper · 01/07/2022 20:23

How do you tell the difference?

Pumperthepumper Do you tell people to 'be kind'?

It's simply not advisable to be nice to every rude cunt that tries to take the piss out of you, it gives them more leeway and it makes you a fool.
