Does anyone else have an unpopular job?

Wednesdayafternoon · 29/06/2022 20:20

And is just sick of the negativity towards it?
I've worked my way up to a decent position in a call Center dealing with home insurance (for a global company) and worked there for 15 plus years.
It's obviously not the most exciting job in the world and certainly isn't where I saw myself working when I was little, but hey ho, it suits my life!
We actually work extremely hard at our place. Dealing with all sorts of situations which can be triggering and unpleasant, dealing with all types of customers who can be verbally abusive.... more often then not!
Home insurance usually peaks in the winter, I've had my Christmas holidays cancelled and been under the most pressure around the holidays pretty much every year. It's hard, really really hard.
But when do you actually hear anyone say anything nice about us poor buggers answering the phones? Dealing with 20+ claims/customers every. Single. Day.
Heaven forbid you say something negative towards the NHS or a teacher on here (not that I do I will point out, but seen it time and time over) and the Mumsnet brigade comes out on full force. Why do people in these jobs only seem to get recognition for working hard?
I worked through the entire pandemic. Until all of our WFH equipment was set up (which took a while) we were going into office every single day with 200+ people... didn't matter whether you were vulnerable or not! Not a single hour was lost.

Anyway I am rambling. I just find the "free pass" for certain jobs tiring. Anyone else feel the same?

Civil servant. People think we are heartless soulless bastards ( we really are not - we have to administer govt policies whether we like it or not and most of us are decent human beings who do actually want to help), we have gold plated pensions ( err no not anymore) jobs for life ( I’ve had to apply for my own job twice through various “reduction schemes”, next one coming soon -they want to get rid of 1 in 5 of us) oh and we are all lazing in front of the tv working from home (I did a 14 hour day yesterday including travelling to and from office). Not expecting any support if we go on strike.

MaryShelley1818 · 30/06/2022 18:29

Another CP Social Worker here...despite the fact I once posted that on a thread (it was relevant to the thread) and someone just replied "no you're not" lol. Classic MN response.

Universally hated, overworked, threatened on a daily basis, but every little baby and child I can help makes it all worth it. Job definitely has a short shelf life though unfortunately as workers usually burn out very quickly.

Workinghardeveryday · 30/06/2022 19:36

@Wednesdayafternoon its am international broker..

Wednesdayafternoon · 30/06/2022 20:34

@Workinghardeveryday ahhh I can think of a few.
After working in insurance I don't. Think I could ever work for a brokerage.... too much beef 😅

Sorry but I'd really disagree with that. Certainly during lockdown when "none of them were working". Granted they get some strong defence in threads, but they get ridiculous threads started about them. My Y10 son attends a new-ish school so a parents FB page was created to navigate the early days. Some of the posts on there highlight why teachers aren't paid enough and/or leave in droves. One parent has objected to a couple of school trips throughout the year as the kids missed enough education during lockdown. Same parent also complained that the Y10's were sitting a proper GCSE this summer as she'd arranged a term time holiday...

Back on topic, there was a similar discussion topic on the radio about this lately. Traffic wardens copped a lot of flak until one called in and asked what other laws people thought they were ok to ignore.

Fair enough, different perspectives I suppose.

@AmericanStickInsect but you actually have no idea what my current position is at my work and what roles I've done to work my way up either and it's not really any of your business. Working in a claim environment is very difficult, very. And it's not a competition either. You may work on one side of it and I work on the other but your experience and way of dealing with things may be very different to mine.

Yeah like I said my job is fine, the hours suit my life but im not on the front line anymore. It's not always been easy.
In my role I've been threatened, been stalked online.. dealt with claims which involve death and threats. It's flipping hard work.

Also please don't feel the need to tell me when I should you certain words, thanks 👍🏼

You posted on a public forum!

There is no point in making things a competition or a race to the bottom, I agree. It's fair of me to have an opinion on the language you used considering you posted your message to the public to gather opinions.

You don't know anyone elses experience either and trauma, PTSD and triggering don't deserve to be minimised to 'bad or difficult experiences'.

You are not being unreasonable expressing how your work feels undervalued.

You are being very unreasonable to misuse language which has a specific meaning, particularly as members of other professions experience it at much higher rates and it is a significant part of their job that needs to be able to be described, acknowledged and talked about.

It feels like you're asking for respect and giving absolutely none to others, even when it's raised to you that they find your use of language unreasonable.

I'm police. I went single crewed to a hanging of an 18 year old last week. I pulled over on the way back and cried in the car. A guy banged on my window and started filming me demanding my collar number, filming me saying he was an 'auditor', and "what was I even doing just parked up in a lay by anyway, probably just waiting to give out speeding tickets" I put the window back up and cried to my Sgt.

Sick of it sometimes.

Yes, I work in a place where people wish me and my colleagues dead. I won't say what I do but many could probably guess. We have protestors waiting for us when we arrive and leave our place of work. I get their point of view but I also get why we do what we do. They are very ignorant to how we actually go about our jobs as people have misbehaved in the past. It is understandable that they hate us when you see things on the Internet that look horrendous, but it's not a true depiction of what goes on in these places at all.

I am curious what this is

I am so sorry @OrchardBlack . I would be in pieces to have to deal with such a scene. My dcs are teenagers. I would be a puddle.

Auditor can go f_ck himself. He has no idea.

I hope you are feeling better.

I used to be a PIP assessor.

Considering how much they keep increasing the pay, yet struggle retaining any staff show how unpopular it is.

Also seemed very unpopular by the general public too!

I've had 3 pip home assessments. All 3 of the assessors have been absolutely lovely

Ah @larmes, I think you are right. I was thinking abortion clinic (with Roe & Wade in mind) but the internet comment did not fit.

@@AmericanStickInsect wow thanks for reminding me that I've posted on a. Public foroum... I forget there for a second!

I just think it's very rich and extremely bizarre you telling me that I'm miss using a word when you literally have zero idea about my personal life and what I've been through and any struggles I may or may not have or how I conduct myself or deal with things at work. Other then I work in insurance, you also have no idea what my actually job is or what roles I've done in work before.
I have actually been diagnosed with PTSD following being in an abusive relationship. I've had counciling and cbt therapy multiple times. It's none of your business but the point of telling you is that you know zero about me and how absolutely dare you tell me how I feel or if I'm allowed to speak a certain way or use language.

Also, I'm giving no respect to others?! Have you actually read my responses? What a weird comment.

You sound quite controlling actually. If you wish to respond then feel free but I'd rather not continue conversation with you.

Try not tell people how they feel when you don't know them. It's just so strange.

Also, it doesn't matter what line of work you work in, nobody has anymore right to hold a certain feeling then anyone else. Nobody. If you think otherwise then that is your problem and not mine.

As you said before, byeeeeeee 👋🏼

Not an unpopular job but I worked for an unpopular company. It went under in a highly publicised shitstorm a few years ago and a lot of people were saying that every one of the several hundred people working there deserved to lose our jobs because clearly none of us had any morals. But most of us were perfectly decent normal people just earning a living.

ChipsRoastOrBoiled · 30/06/2022 22:14

I worked in Student Finance during that huge fiasco in 2009 & 2010. I don't know if any of you can recall it or had your own/your kids' student loans & grants caught up in it.

We were so unpopular I used to take my lanyard off before I left the building and never told a soul (outside of friends & family) where I worked.

AmericanStickInsect · 30/06/2022 22:22

@Wednesdayafternoon

You are the one that jumped on my comment and started a conversation.

If your work is inherently traumatising and triggering you, that needs addressing.
If it isn't, don't say it is.
That's all I said in reply to your comment.

Glad you've acknowledged to OrchardBlack that their profession puts them through things you can't even imagine. That's my exact point.

Glad you've overcome what you have.
Best wishes if you have further to go.

Bye.

I'm glad to hear it!

I did my best to be kind and fair, as did the people I worked with (most of them anyway).

But there's some very harsh words said about the assessors online, most from people who don't realise we are following a criteria, and are made to change our scores by auditors.

Madein1995 · 30/06/2022 23:11

I'm a probation officer- so I either want to hug the people I work with or send them all to prison, depending on who you speak to! Amazing amount of times I've been asked my occupation only for the other person to start justifying their drink driving conviction etc when I've not even asked!

MissCrowley · 01/07/2022 07:30

I was a tarot reader.
I'm also a witch so very used to the prejudice. I can't say what the vast majority say on Mumsnet bothers me.
The vast majority are white middle class pearl clutchers with an overly invested love of Boden (who make the most boring clothes on earth and you can determine who's a mum from a mile off in their stripy top and yellow Mac)
I tend to lurk a lot and avoid topics I have no interest in (such as fashion) as a lot of the recommendations are bloody hideous in my opinion 🤣

I used to work for immigration. I stopped telling people what I did as either they berated me for persecuting people in dire need and didn't know how I slept at night or I was far too lenient and needed to deport them all back home.

Never met a decent police officer. They deserve their reputation imho.

I've met both types of Police - stinking lying cunts who should be locked up, and incredibly decent hard workers who go way beyond the call of duty. Fortunately, in my experience, the decent ones are the majority.

I've never met a decent fishmonger either. The two I've met in different supermarkets are rude, obnoxious and one in particular is patronising and borderline sexist tbh. Yeah I'm sure there's some good ones but none of the ones I've met have been. Fishmongers don't have a bad reputation but they should. AFAB. #Fuckthefishmongers

Thank you to everyone including OP who has sent their wishes. @VladmirsPoutine feel free to come on an observation shift with me any time, my colleagues and I will be happy to show you how decent we really are.
