Does anyone else have an unpopular job?

And is just sick of the negativity towards it?
I've worked my way up to a decent position in a call Center dealing with home insurance (for a global company) and worked there for 15 plus years.
It's obviously not the most exciting job in the world and certainly isn't where I saw myself working when I was little, but hey ho, it suits my life!
We actually work extremely hard at our place. Dealing with all sorts of situations which can be triggering and unpleasant, dealing with all types of customers who can be verbally abusive.... more often then not!
Home insurance usually peaks in the winter, I've had my Christmas holidays cancelled and been under the most pressure around the holidays pretty much every year. It's hard, really really hard.
But when do you actually hear anyone say anything nice about us poor buggers answering the phones? Dealing with 20+ claims/customers every. Single. Day.
Heaven forbid you say something negative towards the NHS or a teacher on here (not that I do I will point out, but seen it time and time over) and the Mumsnet brigade comes out on full force. Why do people in these jobs only seem to get recognition for working hard?
I worked through the entire pandemic. Until all of our WFH equipment was set up (which took a while) we were going into office every single day with 200+ people... didn't matter whether you were vulnerable or not! Not a single hour was lost.

Anyway I am rambling. I just find the "free pass" for certain jobs tiring. Anyone else feel the same?

Different type of people on giving/receiving ends.
Don’t be a dick would be a mantra.
I have no problem saying to GP receptionist the problem I’m calling with.
Asda customer service- why do they start apologising before Ieven stated what my problem is?
Call centre- no problem as long as I can understand them.
TeachersatDC school-lovely.

Nobody’s above or below some jobs. All of them are needed. Suddenly shelf stacker became a hero in first lockdown and so was the cleaner for NHS.
All jobs are needed and should be respected.

Chunkythighss · 30/06/2022 01:02

I’m a teacher.
i work 9-3 for half the year and get paid tonnes of money for doing nothing.

this couldn’t be further from the truth but no one wants to hear it 🙈

I'm a statistician. Not a disliked job but telling people my job often ends the conversation as most people think it's very boring 😅

Boring is a term often used when it is too hard to understand.

I’m an auditor. I spend a lot of my working life feeling like a huge pain in the backside- nobody is every particularly pleased to see me. People can be quite rude about it, and if they aren’t it’s usually because they’re nervous or scared to meet me. Does wonders for your self esteem this role!

Yes, definitely one of the most unpopular jobs mentioned - everyone thinks you are out to catch them out (which you are 😂)

growandhope · 30/06/2022 01:23

Teachers get a slating because a lot of people had one somewhere in their past that was a bad egg; at an age where it really matters. So any slight to the grown up person's child goes back into those formative years and what they are still angry about.

ifIwerenotanandroid · 30/06/2022 01:28

Just running a test, apologies. There's a thread I've been trying to write a post on, & four times now I've written a post but when it gets to a certain point (character limit?), MN wipes it out with an error message before I can put it on the thread. Just want to see if it happens on another thread or if it's weirdly linked to one particular thread...

So far, so good. It only seems to happen on the thread about a woman moving into a new house & not liking the oak tree next door. I've posted on other threads earlier today, too. How bizarre. Maybe this is an example of MN woo.

Anyway, yes I once had an unpopular job. I was a computer engineer & someone told me computers were responsible for all the evil in the world. And this was before the WWW was invented.

OK, so I think the problem is associated with the tree thread. Can't for the life of me think why. I'll try & post this.

Criminal barrister

AKA: fat cat unethical lawyer who defends the guilty people at the (overinflated) expense of the taxpayer.

No, just sometimes, defending the indefensible. Always like the Casey Anthony trial and I remember watching all 6 weeks of that on some American channel with hour by hour commentary by a defence lawyer who was asked the question and I understand, every single person deserves a defence, but it leaves a bit of ick in your court.I do get it though.

I'm a lawyer. Everybody hates us. Until they need us.

Nah, they hate you when they need you too ;)

This

I watched Jodie Comer recently, where she played a barrister in Prima Facie. She was absolutely astonishing but the play was something else. Funny, gripping, heartbreaking and hugely thought provoking.

It would be interesting to know how truthful it is (it was written by someone who's studied law) but it doesn't make barristers or the law look very good, especially with rape cases.

Naturally my opinion of barristers and the legal system has hit new lows since.

Glitteratitar · 30/06/2022 02:03

I’m a disputes lawyer.

Everyone always goes on about lawyers being the only winners, etc but believe it or not we do try to discourage clients from going to court when their case is weak. Half the time they disagree which does mean extortionate fees, but we did warn them repeatedly that there is a high chance they will lose.

Another social worker here...used to work in child protection now in children in care...

I avoid telling people in real life what I do, because I hate the 'oh I couldn't do your job' or the 'can I ask your advise about...'

Love my job, just hate society's view of me.

Worked I have child protection too...

Apparently we are only one step up from the child catcher in chitty chitty bang bang...
They always know their neighbours /sisrer/family friend who had their 'kids taken away for no reason'....

No you just haven't heard the reason...

I found telling folk I worked at the local council... Deflected it enough 😁, mostly...

I remember on one holiday I was a archive clerk😁, rarely encourages more questions!

FangsForTheMemory · 30/06/2022 06:17

I used to work in local government communications. That’s communications as in PR. A real double whammy. Horribly stressful.

pantsandpringles · 30/06/2022 06:38

I was a complaints manager for a UK bank for years.

We were the absolute devil incarnate who didn't give a toss about any customer other than to try and defraud them out of money.

You know, unless you were stranded 500 miles from home with no food, money or support, in which case we were angels because we provided thousands in emergency funding every single day to people in need.

Or if you had transferred thousands to the wrong person

Or if you needed help with retrieving 42 months of bank statements

They think we don't care, but I, and many others have spent hours and days working our arse off in the backgound to try and help, and have been found outside in the smoking shelter, crying because we couldn't help any more, or because our hands were tied by legislation and law.

Bit mostly, my shed blew down, I lost my phone etc actually

That's not likely to be the stuff OP does, though, is it. Since she says she's been doing it 15 years and is quite senior.

usernamenotaccepted · 30/06/2022 07:26

I work in an NHS CAMHS service.

quiteathome · 30/06/2022 08:24

Podiatrist here. People just think we are strange.

Twoweeksandcounting · 30/06/2022 08:31

I used to be a health visitor, a profession which gets a lot of stick on mumsnet! A lot of people seem to have the view that HVs are a waste of time and space, aren’t qualified, don’t have a clue what they’re talking about. Unfortunately we hear a lot about the bad experiences people have with the service, and not much about the good.

Wednesdayafternoon · 30/06/2022 08:33

@Workinghardeveryday actually no 👍🏼

I worked at HMRC a long time ago; like a pp people would complain about why their taxes were 'so high' or ask me questions about their self employment.
I work in library and archives these days. I get how it just be so boring working with 'old books and rubbish'. Well no, it's actually my dream job and very interesting.

hangrylady · 30/06/2022 09:53

I used to be a Recruitment consultant. Once a bloke was chatting me up and asked what I did. I told him and he told me to fuck off and walked off! Charming😂
