Does anyone else have an unpopular job?

And is just sick of the negativity towards it?
I've worked my way up to a decent position in a call Center dealing with home insurance (for a global company) and worked there for 15 plus years.
It's obviously not the most exciting job in the world and certainly isn't where I saw myself working when I was little, but hey ho, it suits my life!
We actually work extremely hard at our place. Dealing with all sorts of situations which can be triggering and unpleasant, dealing with all types of customers who can be verbally abusive.... more often then not!
Home insurance usually peaks in the winter, I've had my Christmas holidays cancelled and been under the most pressure around the holidays pretty much every year. It's hard, really really hard.
But when do you actually hear anyone say anything nice about us poor buggers answering the phones? Dealing with 20+ claims/customers every. Single. Day.
Heaven forbid you say something negative towards the NHS or a teacher on here (not that I do I will point out, but seen it time and time over) and the Mumsnet brigade comes out on full force. Why do people in these jobs only seem to get recognition for working hard?
I worked through the entire pandemic. Until all of our WFH equipment was set up (which took a while) we were going into office every single day with 200+ people... didn't matter whether you were vulnerable or not! Not a single hour was lost.

Anyway I am rambling. I just find the "free pass" for certain jobs tiring. Anyone else feel the same?

I don't doubt that some people have come across nice ones. I'm sure if I were white + middle class for example my views of them would be different. But in my view the police cause more harm than they resolve and that's based on my observations and experiences with them. They are intrinsically racist and to varying extents misogynist.

I work in a mortuary. A lot of
people say they could never do my job so I guess in that sense it’s unpopular.

I'm a teacher. We get vilified on here and in school I get called a cent on an almost daily basis.

Witchcraftandhokum · 02/07/2022 11:20

*I get called a cunt. Bloody autocorrect.

Oh yes. Reguarly get told told I'm rude for not being able to schedule a customers fitting exactly when they wish. Sworn at. cried at. Hung up on.

On ringing around today, with toothache the amount of people answering the phone in such a dull manner with no compassion in dentistry makes me think empathy doesn't exist in any industry.

I mean I take your point OP, but teachers are far from loved on MN either.

You can't take MN seriously sometimes. IRL I have not heard people speaking about teachers like this. The question OP asked was about unpopular I don't think teaching is unpopular at all.

I used to work for immigration. I stopped telling people what I did as either they berated me for persecuting people in dire need and didn't know how I slept at night or I was far too lenient and needed to deport them all back home.

I still do, working as an asylum decision maker.

I don’t tell anyone what I do (I’ve name changed for this) for exactly the same reason.

I am an Approved Mental Health Professional (social worker by profession) - so yeah pretty unpopular all round 😒

The public don't generally meet you in the happiest of circumstances do they? I must say, during a very difficult time for our family, the only AMHP I've ever knowingly met was lovely. It must be a very hard job, my thanks to you and your colleagues.
