Does anyone else have an unpopular job?

And is just sick of the negativity towards it?
I've worked my way up to a decent position in a call Center dealing with home insurance (for a global company) and worked there for 15 plus years.
It's obviously not the most exciting job in the world and certainly isn't where I saw myself working when I was little, but hey ho, it suits my life!
We actually work extremely hard at our place. Dealing with all sorts of situations which can be triggering and unpleasant, dealing with all types of customers who can be verbally abusive.... more often then not!
Home insurance usually peaks in the winter, I've had my Christmas holidays cancelled and been under the most pressure around the holidays pretty much every year. It's hard, really really hard.
But when do you actually hear anyone say anything nice about us poor buggers answering the phones? Dealing with 20+ claims/customers every. Single. Day.
Heaven forbid you say something negative towards the NHS or a teacher on here (not that I do I will point out, but seen it time and time over) and the Mumsnet brigade comes out on full force. Why do people in these jobs only seem to get recognition for working hard?
I worked through the entire pandemic. Until all of our WFH equipment was set up (which took a while) we were going into office every single day with 200+ people... didn't matter whether you were vulnerable or not! Not a single hour was lost.

Anyway I am rambling. I just find the "free pass" for certain jobs tiring. Anyone else feel the same?

Well I think the poor dentist on Page 1 gets the prize!

I have the loveliest dentist who is such a pleasure to see but I HATE going to her.

I do often wonder why anyone would choose to be one.

I work in veterinary.

All vets are money grabbing, driving around in big flashy cars who don’t care for animals.

The reality is most are far from rich, working 60 hour weeks to receive nothing but abuse from people who haven’t planned for any medical care for their pet yet blame us.

I saw a post on social media the other day from a man who’s dog very sadly had cancer in its mouth. He was slating the vet for not telling him it was cancer (because he wouldn’t pay for testing) and offering to remove the tooth to see if that helped and then offering palliative care. He was furious because they wouldn’t treat his old dog on charity money that had 0 chance of recovery, calling them money grabbing bastards and the like.
There we’re hundreds of comments agreeing, all from people who had ‘missed cancers’ etc but again, presumably wouldn’t pay for diagnostics either.
We also had someone sign over a cat they couldn’t pay for (despite being offered payment plans and hugely reduced costs from our emergency charity fund) yet rushed online to say the vets had ‘stolen’ her cat. Again more comments about how disgusting we are.
Finally, a post calling a vet for taking in a very old and ill looking cat and advertising for its owner, with hundreds of people saying it’s been ‘stolen’ and to put it back where it was found and another 50 or so saying ‘scan it for a chip’ 🤔 As if they didn’t try that. Possibly yes they could put it back, but then put an old decrepit cat back onto the street and you get accused of not helping or caring for strays. Damned if you do or you don’t.

Its a shame you can’t work with animals without having to deal with such idiots.

I'm a lawyer. Everybody hates us. Until they need us.

It's not personal. The legal system stinks and needs major reforms.
And I hate having to engage a lawyer for things that shouldn't even require it just because we are such a backwards old fashioned country,.

WatchoRulo · 30/06/2022 10:25

Personal vilification or daft complaints to individuals about things they have no influence over are shit, but seem par for the course for some people.

I never get the hatred for traffic wardens - park properly = no problem.

When I worked for minimum wage in a filling station there were always cunts moaning to me about the prices as if I was CEO of BP or something.

I used to be a health visitor, a profession which gets a lot of stick on mumsnet! A lot of people seem to have the view that HVs are a waste of time and space, aren’t qualified, don’t have a clue what they’re talking about. Unfortunately we hear a lot about the bad experiences people have with the service, and not much about the good.

My health visitor was the only one who helped me and pushed for an assessment for my daughter who was so clearly delayed. I will always be grateful for that and was never able to thank her properly as she moved local authorities. My daughter has ASD, SPD and Global delay. The GP was an absolute waste of time and only put in a letter for referral when the HV wrote to him. I have not had many good experiences with GP’s unfortunately, the ones that were were good were amazing though.

I’m a work coach in a jobcentre. The public hate us, the press hate us and currently the government appear to hate us.

@wheresmymojo

I'd love to do that...how does one get into this line of work?

What kind of role would I need to Google?

Broadly, the two parts of my job are M&A due diligence, and post-acquisition value creation.

The due diligence is the pre-deal "detective work" and the post-acq work is about the strategy once you buy the company.

There are several different types of due diligence so it depends on what your professional background is. Commercial DD is big and usually people come from a banking/consulting background. Very structured recruiting process. Either out of uni or an MBA in your mid-late 20s.

There is also legal DD, tech DD, operational DD (manufacturing) etc, which require people who are experts in each of those topics. For example ops DD is about going to a factory and seeing if it's run well, are there health and safety issues that the selling company is trying to hide, etc. People normally enter this later in their careers.

Wednesdayafternoon · 30/06/2022 12:32

@Twoweeksandcounting my health visitor was absolutely incredible. She went above and beyond to help support me. I felt so supported, she really was amazing.
She left her job though because she felt that cut backs etc meant she wasn't allowed to do the job like she wanted to so she does something else now.
Now I don't have a health visitor, someone will just comtact me when it's review time. I don't have anyone to ring or text just the helpline.
I know it's not the HV though, they care but I don't think they are given the time like the used to!

My lovely Dad was a copper, and the kindest most honourable man you could wish to meet. There are some bad apples, as in any profession, but I believe most are hard working honest people trying to do a good job in difficult circumstances.

As a solicitor who works in-house, I completely sympathise. The other thing lawyers can do which apparently no one else can is read a contract even though it is in English. Yes, English. The answer to the question you are asking me is right there in the contact in plain English. It is not voodoo.

Oh god, yes! "What does the contract say about x.." Perhaps have a look and then if you don't understand or you aren't sure and what clarification, please come and ask me and I'll be happy to help. But at least read the section you're enquiring about first!

Sillyotter · 30/06/2022 14:10

Work in the veterinary profession. Dealing with clients who threaten to get social media/lawyers involved for ‘misdiagnosis’ when they refused all diagnostics so the vet had to go with their best guess. Apparently we cause lots of hurt and upset for not having a crystal ball?

@Wednesdayafternoon

You said you're happy in your job, that you like doing it, you've done it for 15 years.
If you were actually being 'triggered' regularly and routinely then no, you wouldn't be happy in your job and no, you shouldn't be doing it.
I'm at the sharp end, dealing with the real life situations that people later go on to claim for that you hear about second hand on the phone.
Unpleasant feelings and empathising with people going through difficult times is not being 'triggered'.
Either you're not being 'triggered' in which case stop using the word so it becomes meaningless.
Or you are being 'triggered' in which case you immediately need help to deal with your job or look for another one.
Byeeeee!

Wednesdayafternoon · 30/06/2022 16:14

@AmericanStickInsect but you actually have no idea what my current position is at my work and what roles I've done to work my way up either and it's not really any of your business. Working in a claim environment is very difficult, very. And it's not a competition either. You may work on one side of it and I work on the other but your experience and way of dealing with things may be very different to mine.

Yeah like I said my job is fine, the hours suit my life but im not on the front line anymore. It's not always been easy.
In my role I've been threatened, been stalked online.. dealt with claims which involve death and threats. It's flipping hard work.

Also please don't feel the need to tell me when I should you certain words, thanks 👍🏼

I have just finished working as a covid contact advisor, so up until recently I was phoning people to tell them they were contacts of a positive case and they had to isolate for 10 days. Unable to tell them who the positive person was due to GDPR.
As you can imagine I was very popular Grin
I'm currently helping out on the cost of living application phone line and have people phoning up telling me they can't pay their bills or buy food because they haven't had their money, I have no control over it!

LT2 · 30/06/2022 16:30

Yes, I work in a place where people wish me and my colleagues dead. I won't say what I do but many could probably guess. We have protestors waiting for us when we arrive and leave our place of work. I get their point of view but I also get why we do what we do. They are very ignorant to how we actually go about our jobs as people have misbehaved in the past. It is understandable that they hate us when you see things on the Internet that look horrendous, but it's not a true depiction of what goes on in these places at all.

Name changed to protect myself..
I work in an animal testing facility. Enough said really.

I just wish people would educate themselves on the regulations that pharmaceuticals used in the UK require. You may judge, but without facilities like us there would be far less life saving treatment produced (cancer treatments, vaccinations etc.). Facilities like ours also are the leading researchers in finding alternative methods for testing pharmaceuticals, we want to change the requirement of animals for this process just as much, if not more, than the activists who harass us.

FYI - cosmetics are NOT tested on animals in the UK. That is illegal.

Ah, there's another one of me! It sucks that we still have to do this, but it is essential. I am an animal lover and I wanted to work with animals. Did i think this was the route I'd go down? No way. 10 years later, still there and my views of what animal testing was (I thought of shampoo in rabbits eyes!) has totally reversed. It is so heavily regulated now after the abuse that happened at the hands of some sick individuals. The welfare of the animals is the number one priority. As soon as an animal is suffering (usually not caused by us, but by random illness) they are humanely euthanized. I don't think any one of us enjoys having to do those bad bits but I get such joy from watching the animals - who are very happy - play with each other and with us.

From one to another - you do a great job👍we don't get told that enough, especially when it can sometimes be an unpleasant one.

I was just reading through my sons reading book this year and I remembered a post I made at the start of the school year, as a new reception mum I might add, where I asked if the teachers read the comments or not and I literally got eaten ALIVE because how could I even suggest a teacher read the reading book and how I greatful and entitled I was to even think they did that! Because they are busy enough and have enough to do.
I just think well trust me I work my absolute ARSE off every single day. I don't stop and rarely get as much as a thank you from anyone. Don't we all work hard 🤷🏼‍♀️

Not the point but I'm a teacher and I read every comment in reading records.

Yep Child Protection Social Worker here, can't think of a much more hated profession other than traffic wardens. Would definitely not encourage my children into this line of work.

I mean I take your point OP, but teachers are far from loved on MN either.

I always see people saying this but I would never come to MN if I had an issue with my child’s school or teacher as there’s very rarely an objective opinion, it will nearly always be skewed to the teacher’s side.

I’m not being goady, I promise, it’s an honest observation and I actually feel mildy nervous even saying this!

Sorry but I'd really disagree with that. Certainly during lockdown when "none of them were working". Granted they get some strong defence in threads, but they get ridiculous threads started about them. My Y10 son attends a new-ish school so a parents FB page was created to navigate the early days. Some of the posts on there highlight why teachers aren't paid enough and/or leave in droves. One parent has objected to a couple of school trips throughout the year as the kids missed enough education during lockdown. Same parent also complained that the Y10's were sitting a proper GCSE this summer as she'd arranged a term time holiday...

Back on topic, there was a similar discussion topic on the radio about this lately. Traffic wardens copped a lot of flak until one called in and asked what other laws people thought they were ok to ignore.

NHS manager for a surgical speciality in an Acute hospital setting. I run outpatient and theatres for 2 large hospitals and 2 satellite hospitals. I am stealing a wage, responsible for the massive waiting lists and am responsible for people dying.

Rockbird · 30/06/2022 18:12

School office, second only to GP receptionists in how much we're hated it seems. I don't care though, I bloody love my job.

Sharrowgirl · 30/06/2022 18:13

I was chatting to the nice man who runs a window company and was sorting out some new windows for my house. He asked what I did and I told him I was a lawyer but that I don’t tell many people because they react negatively. He rather brilliantly countered with ‘You should try being a double glazing salesman’
