Does anyone else have an unpopular job?

And is just sick of the negativity towards it?
I've worked my way up to a decent position in a call Center dealing with home insurance (for a global company) and worked there for 15 plus years.
It's obviously not the most exciting job in the world and certainly isn't where I saw myself working when I was little, but hey ho, it suits my life!
We actually work extremely hard at our place. Dealing with all sorts of situations which can be triggering and unpleasant, dealing with all types of customers who can be verbally abusive.... more often then not!
Home insurance usually peaks in the winter, I've had my Christmas holidays cancelled and been under the most pressure around the holidays pretty much every year. It's hard, really really hard.
But when do you actually hear anyone say anything nice about us poor buggers answering the phones? Dealing with 20+ claims/customers every. Single. Day.
Heaven forbid you say something negative towards the NHS or a teacher on here (not that I do I will point out, but seen it time and time over) and the Mumsnet brigade comes out on full force. Why do people in these jobs only seem to get recognition for working hard?
I worked through the entire pandemic. Until all of our WFH equipment was set up (which took a while) we were going into office every single day with 200+ people... didn't matter whether you were vulnerable or not! Not a single hour was lost.

Anyway I am rambling. I just find the "free pass" for certain jobs tiring. Anyone else feel the same?

HMRC, worked right through lockdown and was heavily involved in the Eat Out to Help Out and furlough schemes. Long days ensuring people were paid out and kept the economy going. All the hard work everyone in HMRC did has barely been acknowledged. I clapped for me 🙂
I also never tell people where I work, you either get grief or asked for advice on something I don't deal with.

Neolara · 29/06/2022 21:04

I do a job that people in real life are usually pretty interested in. But someone with the same job did an AMA thread a little while ago and she had lots of people shouting her for 200 posts. There were massive misconceptions and she was getting a lot of flack for stuff that she had no responsibility for. I'd never seen an AMA thread like it. So based on that, I appear to have an unpopular job.

MrsMikeWazowski · 29/06/2022 21:07

I'm a statistician. Not a disliked job but telling people my job often ends the conversation as most people think it's very boring 😅

retiredtrafficcop · 29/06/2022 21:12

I was a traffic cop, now a driving examiner....🤐

HouseofHolbein · 29/06/2022 21:16

I work in a supermarket. Apparently we should all retrain if we want to be paid a reasonable wage. No idea who would actually feed the nation if we all did...

I’m not really sure what you want from this post? Everyone who works, works hard. Why do we need recognition? I don’t work in a “recognised” role but I get paid well for doing it so don’t need people to clap me

But the OP's point is that she works in a role which has very negative press. Like teachers. Estate Agents & Car Salesmen.

School Office Lady.

and I’m not a mind reader which makes me very very wrong all the time

Calmestofallthechickens · 29/06/2022 21:18

I’m a vet. The amount of abuse we get for ‘being in it for the money’ is unreal. Yes, I get paid to come to work…. So does your paediatrician and you’re not berating them about it.

Narwhalelife · 29/06/2022 21:19

I am an Approved Mental Health Professional (social worker by profession) - so yeah pretty unpopular all round 😒

Oh wow, I have never heard anyone say this about vets. All the vets we've known have been so lovely, and clearly adore animals! Wouldn't cross my mind to think any of them were in it for the money.

I used to be a PIP assessor.

Considering how much they keep increasing the pay, yet struggle retaining any staff show how unpopular it is.

Also seemed very unpopular by the general public too!

I’m a social worker. Not a career which is ever really respected or praised. I too work extremely hard and I feel that if people knew the work we did and how positive it actually is then their attitude towards us would change. I would in adult mental health rather than child protection. I think child protection social workers probably have an even harder time of it

I think this is so sad, as it must be an extremely difficult job. I did consider it briefly, and then just didn't think I would be mentally capable of shutting off at the end of the day. To be honest, it frightened me a little when I read into it. So Fair play to you! The press can be so cutting sometimes. I believe it's an extremely underfunded area isn't it?

TheCraicDealer · 29/06/2022 21:24

I also work in insurance claims. What a lot of people don’t realise is that it’s a lot more work to turn down a claim than it is just to pay it, and at the end of the day it doesn’t come out of my pocket. But to listen to some people you’d think me and my colleagues get on like the fucking Sheriff of Nottingham.

I'm a TA not a valued job !!!

The TAs at my daughter's schools are always my favourite people. They work so hard to make kids feel comfortable and more than one have helped her out when she's had a toileting accident. I appreciate them so much especially since I think they don't get paid evough.

CPSW · 29/06/2022 21:25

Child Protection Social Worker here. Need I say more? Unbelievably tough job, workload through the roof, everyone hates us and it’s all our fault when it goes wrong. I love working with the children though (even the ones that tell me to fuck off).

Neena86 · 29/06/2022 21:25

I work in a supermarket. It's bloody hard work! I mostly stock the shelves and it's relentless heavy lifting. It's also somehow my own personal fault that prices have gone up and that we no longer stock Coleman's sauces.

Rookiemistake · 29/06/2022 21:27

YABU - you work in a job where the aim is to line the pockets of shareholders. I respect that you work hard but as with any job that is your choice and ultimately you're doing it to make other people richer.

Findahouse21 · 29/06/2022 21:29

@CPSW just saying hi from another CP social worker.

Iottie · 29/06/2022 21:30

I work behind the scenes in politics. I’ve been attacked quite a bit on Twitter even though I literally never post anything. I was recently referred to as evil and sinister which amused me and my social circle quite a bit 😂 I legit have no power to influence anything yet the ill informed nut jobs still attack me 🤷🏻‍♀️

mosesbass · 29/06/2022 21:33

I have a job that I think people think is good of me to do but they'd never do it themselves. I work with people with substance misuse issues and rough sleepers. Don't get paid enough.

WildOnce · 29/06/2022 21:36

I work in HR. We are the big baddies working with the bosses to tell everyone off and fire you:

My department is trying to support manager and employees to create and maintain a fair, successful and satisfying workplace.

CPSW · 29/06/2022 21:38

Hi! Lovely to meet you and all the other SWs on here.

👏👏to everyone doing tough jobs. You are all awesome.

Sunshineboo · 29/06/2022 21:38

Do you say that to literally everyone in the private sector?

Do you have a pension from your presumably very worthy job? Because that makes you a shareholder.

So get down off your high horse.
