To wonder what we do now that will be frowned upon in 30-40 years time

This video is a prime example of how attitudes change. It seems we go just go from stupid to stupid all the time.

digg.com/video/this-1967-british-news-report-that-interviewed-drunk-drivers-before-it-became-illegal-is-bonkers

Another example is passive smoking. Obviously stupid and horrible to think we just smoked freely inside, thinking it was fine to breathe in smoke.

Fossil fueled cars will likely be the next as will idling cars outside of schools but I wonder what else we'll be scratching our heads over in future.

I sincerely hope it will come to be seen as unaccetable that people were kept alive for years with no quality of life and poor care, rather than allowing them an earlier, peaceful and dignified death.

I have a horrible feeling that there will be a move towards making older people feel like they are a drain on society. In fact I’m seeing it now.

Let’s face it, adult care is not affordable (no one had come up with a solution to that so far).

The young don’t want their inheritance whittled away in nursing home fees and people are being devalued and mocked as they get older and given derogatory names such as ‘boomer’.

As the environment and shortage of resources becomes ever more apparent it will make it even worse. There will be an expectation on older people to opt for euthanasia once they reach a certain age eg 75 - they will be put under pressure and guilt tripped into it in the same way that new mothers are pressured to breast feed and have natural births etc.

Forty years ago I thought we would live in a better world with more equality and a lot more tolerance. It hasn't happened , so I'm not that optimistic that anything much will change in 40 years either. I think it could be worse.

Private car ownership

SexyLittleNosferatu · 29/06/2022 09:09

Ah silly me, this is just a thinly veiled "unpopular opinions" thread. I see we are already onto tattoos and fat people.

Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase · 29/06/2022 09:10

Frustare, not in my town unfortunately. Dog shit all over the pavements and it’s got worse since Covid - I suppose with people getting lockdown dogs and not taking responsibility for them. I see it every time I go on the school run. And if you don’t see it you can often smell it. People are always complaining on our local Facebook page about it. It’s a big problem. Your town must be more civilised than mine!

crummyusername · 29/06/2022 09:11

Petrol cars. Noisy, polluting. And manual gears - I have a hybrid now that’s an automatic and it’s ridiculously easy to drive without faffing around changing gears all the time.

TheTerfTavern · 29/06/2022 09:11

Screens and sugar is my bet

this generation of children will be totally fucked up because of both, I reckon.

Ithinkitsadoughnut · 29/06/2022 09:11

Grown males being allowed to compete against women and children in semi/professional sports. I hope people will look back at this in complete shock

Agreed

Not having euthanasia and leaving people to rot in care homes

winemedown · 29/06/2022 09:15

@Hobbesmanc trouble is that these things are part of diversity. You cannot have 'I hope all people are accepted no matter what colour, religion, culture' and then ban things which are fundamentally important to some cultures like ear piercing.

FlamingosInThePark · 29/06/2022 09:16

@Blogdog I couldn't agree more.

I have recently started work for the gambling regulator and the amount of money people spend with the industry doing basic or no checks is mind boggling!

I realise I only see the worst examples but my goodness. It's eye opening. And with mobile phones, addicts have 24/ 7 access to feed their addiction.

Many people really do need saving from themselves it seems!

I hope the White Paper will address concerns but I fear it will be massively watered down due to pressure from the industry and those against the nanny state.

Allowing minors unfettered access to the internet.

That’s a good one!!!!

mrsfrancinemeowington · 29/06/2022 09:17

Veganism

rurbane · 29/06/2022 09:17

Maybe owning excessive stuff, especially stuff that can't biodegrade or be recycled. Maybe over time things will be built to last, including houses that are insulated, etc. But companies will always need to make money and people will always want to express themselves, so I also wonder what will be 'in' as well. Hopefully not drugs or too much body modification.

Sunnysideup999 · 29/06/2022 09:18

Hopefully feeding kids processed food .
any kind of marketing/ offers for processed foods.

Big lips, big eyebrows, endless pouting/sticking tongue out selfies.....
Hopefully

Oh god yes, why on earth do people think selfies with their tongues hanging out is remotely attractive?! Drives me crazy!

I don't see it so much nowadays but a while ago so many people were taking selfies with that filter that made them look like dogs with huge tongues hanging down... why?!

Willing to admit I might just be too old to 'get it'

TheKeatingFive · 29/06/2022 09:19

Tickled to see meat eating and veganism both mentioned!

OddBoots · 29/06/2022 09:20

Ultra processed food and snacking/grazing culture.

rurbane · 29/06/2022 09:21

Also agree about living conditions for pets. We have small animals and the recommended cage size is far bigger now than when we first got them.

boogiewithasuitcase · 29/06/2022 09:21

Going into work or a cafe, or on a train journey, coughing and sneezing into the air.

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 29/06/2022 08:42

Definitely alcohol. The only addictive, toxic substance people are positively encouraged to consume (except sugar - hopefully that will be next but I think alcohol will go the way of smoking first)

Synthehol anyone?

Squiblet · 29/06/2022 09:24

Definitely casual flying. I see more and more people realising that taking a plane is a very high-cost activity, in terms of emissions - so they don't stop flying altogether, but they do it more thoughtfully. Maybe only taking flights once every few years, or only flying when necessary, rather than hopping on and off planes as if they were buses.

TitInATrance · 29/06/2022 09:25

Marriage as a legal contract affecting property rights.

HerbertChops · 29/06/2022 09:25

Hopefully porn (especially the stuff that shows women being choked, slapped, spat on, which is all if it these days) will be relegated to history alongside surrogacy, drag and gender ideology. Women will hopefully be seen as full humans rather than possessions and objects.

I can’t agree with euthanasia as I’d worry too much about all the people who would feel pressured to opt for it as they’re worried they’re a burden to their families.
