To wonder what we do now that will be frowned upon in 30-40 years time

This video is a prime example of how attitudes change. It seems we go just go from stupid to stupid all the time.

digg.com/video/this-1967-british-news-report-that-interviewed-drunk-drivers-before-it-became-illegal-is-bonkers

Another example is passive smoking. Obviously stupid and horrible to think we just smoked freely inside, thinking it was fine to breathe in smoke.

Fossil fueled cars will likely be the next as will idling cars outside of schools but I wonder what else we'll be scratching our heads over in future.

There will be an expectation on older people to opt for euthanasia once they reach a certain age

I agree this will probably happen.

In developed countries, birth rates are low but population is rising because quite frankly, people live so long now. It's quite unsustainable. The focus continues to be on to try to lower the birth rate more and more in order to curb population growth because that's more palatable than telling people they are living too long. However eventually the population will be so old without enough young people to support it. Eventually euthanasia will be legalised and subtlety encouraged I think.

Apologies I misunderstood as what won’t exist, rather than frowned on.

Cinnabomb · 29/06/2022 09:27

PFAS and micro plastics. It’s actually terrifying what we have sleep walked into in terms of poisoning practically all life on earth, from micro plankton to elephants to humans.

I think we’ll learn a lot about childhood emotional abuse/neglect in the next few decades and realise how rife it is.

I agree with this and would include different types of anxiety too.
I'd like to see subjects that some people ignore - simply because they don't know how to talk about it and it makes them uncomfortable 🙄 - become easier to address for future generations.
Interesting thread.

Not sure meat will go entirely, but nitrates as a preservative is already on the way out.

No they're not.

If we did stop eating meat, bacon would be the last meat product to go.

I hope and pray something will be done about end stage dementia and other diseases that ruin your life, bankrupt your family and don’t kill you.

RudsyFarmer · 29/06/2022 09:30

Euthanasia as an option is a good thing in my eyes. I do wonder though with people like the anti-abortion fascists leading the way currently, how you square the circle of embryos being sacrosanct and old people being killed of their own free will. I think those two things are diametrically opposite morally.

Ah silly me, this is just a thinly veiled "unpopular opinions" thread. I see we are already onto tattoos and fat people.

Just came on to say exactly this!

this

and cars in cities will become more uncommon, some cities have banned cars successfully, to the point residents don’t want them to return

I would love our city suburb to ban cars. Bar people with disabilities there is no reason for cars- we have buses, trams, you can walk everywhere, there are safe cycling routes. I would love a completely car free city!

goldfinchonthelawn · 29/06/2022 09:31

I think the acceptance of constant and casual drinking culture will be looked back on in horror. People drinking until they vomit or pass out. The violence against NHS staff trying to help them etc. I think we'll sober up. The trend is coming.

I think we will look back in consternation that children were put on puberty blockers and had their body parts removed instead of giving them full support and counselling during teenage years to assess if they were just resisting adolescence, or body dysmorphic or genuinely trans.

And the pop-psychology 'Be happy' culture will be recognised as deeply counter productive. Children will be raised to allow a whole range of emotions and how to manage them instead of suppressing them.

I'm not so keen on the idea of future with no meat, alcohol, or sugar!

I can see it going that way though. I predict we'll get to a stage where healthy lifestyles are enforced in such a way that's really restrictive and basically takes away our freedom of choice.

This will never happen. People will eat less meat but not no meat. Ditto the others.

Judging people’s health based on the way they look and BMI as a measurement.
I’d like to think there will be more understanding of genetics – you only have to look at my dad’s family; I have 9 aunts who all have exactly the same body shape as me, as did my paternal grandmother and her mother – despite both living in poverty, walking everywhere and doing lots of manual housework. I’m fat (size 16 and 5’2 – I waver between overweight and obese on the BMI calculator) and I’m completely aware that while I could do with losing some weight (and working on it), I’ll never be skinny. I run 2 x 5k and 1 x 10k every week and do yoga every day. My joints, stamina, fitness and lung capacity are better than most of my thinner friends. If I have any health complaint though, it is put down to my size with no doctor taking the time to actually talk to me about my health. I’d like to think we’ll have a better understanding of different bodies and a holistic approach to healthcare in future.

However, I also don’t expect we’ll have an NHS so who knows what healthcare will look like at all.

Grown males being allowed to compete against women and children in semi/professional sports. I hope people will look back at this in complete shock

To be fair, the majority are looking at it in complete shock right now.
