To wonder what we do now that will be frowned upon in 30-40 years time

This video is a prime example of how attitudes change. It seems we go just go from stupid to stupid all the time.

digg.com/video/this-1967-british-news-report-that-interviewed-drunk-drivers-before-it-became-illegal-is-bonkers

Another example is passive smoking. Obviously stupid and horrible to think we just smoked freely inside, thinking it was fine to breathe in smoke.

Fossil fueled cars will likely be the next as will idling cars outside of schools but I wonder what else we'll be scratching our heads over in future.

Using plastic wet wipes.
Fortunately I think they will be banned in less than 30 years

Provenceinthesummer · 29/06/2022 08:51

Meat consumption - for sure future generations will look back and wonder why anyone would feast on a carcass of a dead and slowly rotting animal. It’s truly barbaric when you think about it

sunglassesonthetable · 29/06/2022 08:51

Giving young children devices ( ie smart phones ) that have free range to the internet.

I think we will look back at that in horror.

Getoff · 29/06/2022 08:52

Johnnysgirl · 29/06/2022 08:39

Nothing? You can't think of a single problem there?

There's nothing intrinsically wrong with any of those three things, it's only the implementation details that make them problematic.

People who want to ban things seem to have a huge lack of imagination.

It's like people assuming flying must be restricted, because it burns fossil fuels. A more logical solution is to continue flying, without burning fossil fuels. Which can be done with the planes currently in existence, it's just that the fuel might cost twice as much. (OK, so using fuel that cost say twice as much would restrict flying somewhat, by pricing out some flights, but only as an unfortunate economic side effect, not because of an arbitrary and illogical rule deliberately created by people without much thinking ability.)

Okeydoky · 29/06/2022 08:52

Helium balloons. We will be horrified that we ever wasted a precious and limited natural resource for bloody balloon arches.

Dirtylittleroses · 29/06/2022 08:53

Using wood burners, those houses with them will drop in value

um you know they are removable right? 😂😂😂

Honeysuckle9 · 29/06/2022 08:53

Large 4 by 4s and people carriers unless required for work. I think people who drive these are already frowned upon.

Provenceinthesummer · 29/06/2022 08:54

Everyone in the country drives 4x4 as you are stuck in the winter without one. That is the point of them. So I assume you man town folk

Cheesecakeandwineinasuitcase · 29/06/2022 08:55

Dirtylittleroses · 29/06/2022 08:05

Artificial grass. People are already starting to be horrified about it, ripping up natural habitats and covering them in a thick layer of plastic fake grass.

Really? It seems to getting more popular to me. A lot of people I know are opting for it. The general consensus is that it’s easier to maintain and looks a lot more natural than it used to. Similarly composite decking and doors. A lot of my neighbours seem to be getting new doors - all of them composite. I guess people are trying to find ways of keeping heat in their homes.

Cherclueless · 29/06/2022 08:55

Wi-Fi. I’m sure that having it everywhere isn’t good for us.

Couldn't agree. You need one where I live. So we are all frowned upon? Lots of people have electric ones now as well. I suppose people won't be happy unless people are just using bikes to get around and public transport only. You are not allowed the freedom of your own vehicle it seems. Sad. I will Drive until the day they Drag me out of my car. F this.

Maybe not in 40 years, but I think some day, people will look back and be aghast that we just let dogs shit all over our streets and parks.

People will look back on it like we now look at medieval people throwing slops out of their window.

Absolutely this!

Also smoking - indoors or out - and using the ground as a giant ashtray.

Meat as a daily part of the diet - I don't think it'll be frowned upon altogether but cheap meat and intensive farming will be.

Car journeys over walkable distances (where no disability).

Tattoos.

Yes yes yes to young people's access to phones. My teens have them like anyone else, but I put it off as long as I felt I could without seriously impacting their social lives, and it still makes me pretty uncomfortable tbh. I've also never let them have social media (in terms of making public posts/sharing pics etc).

On a similar theme - 'influencers'. We'll be horrified that these marketing practices were allowed.

Payday loans with exploitative interest rates.

Cuck00soup · 29/06/2022 08:59

Fast fashion
Processed food
Affirming anxious teenagers who may not like gender stereotypes
Paying less to travel by plane than train.

That doesn’t happen here…people use poo bags !! What you have described was about 20 years ago !

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 29/06/2022 09:00

These filters where you make yourself into an animal on selfies. I have to laugh at the thought of future generations looking up their ancestors and being surprised to see that great great great grandma had doe eyes, nose and ears.

YouSoundLovely · 29/06/2022 09:00

Another one I really hope for - the utter madness of the UK property system, with homes seen as a way of getting rich and pulling the 'ladder' up behind one. I hope future generations will be ashamed of the appalling tenancy laws and collective shaming of 'renters' and look on it the same way we look on Victorians sending children up chimneys.

Stath · 29/06/2022 09:00

That video is amazing @Lunar27!

The posh woman who ‘drove drunk all through Kenya’! Out of all of the interviewees the cheeky chap with the side parting seemed the only one who would be willing to follow the 1967 act.

Mind you, it seemed the norm in my childhood (70s and 80s) for Dads to have a few pints and drive home.

This is a really weird one to read as I get so much grief for NOT allowing this.

Comedycook · 29/06/2022 09:02

I doubt surrogacy will disappear or be frowned upon. I actually think it will become more and more popular until we get to a point where only poor women ever experience pregnancy. It will become standard for wealthy women to use a surrogate.

SexyLittleNosferatu · 29/06/2022 09:03

ChilliPB · 29/06/2022 08:20

Religion?

Wouldn't that be brilliant. All the terrible things that happen because of religion concern me far more than "tatty extensions and artificial grass".

This.

I'd love to see disposable swimming nappies banned as well. The reusable ones are soooo easy to use. I can see why people use disposal nappies, even though they are terrible for the environment and I wish more people were shown how easy it can be to use Terry nappies, but disposable swimming nappies are so unnecessary.

TheKeatingFive · 29/06/2022 09:03

Well that's a fucking horrifying thought.

I reckon one day we'll look at alcohol in the same way we've already started to look at smoking.

This. Generation Z are not as big on drinking as older generations.

FrustareNT · 29/06/2022 09:04

LaDoIceVita · 29/06/2022 08:31

I sincerely hope it will come to be seen as unaccetable that people were kept alive for years with no quality of life and poor care, rather than allowing them an earlier, peaceful and dignified death.

I really hope you are right!

Thought about it 32 years ago, stopped doing it, got monumental amounts of hassle about it, maybe in 40 years people will catch up??

not holding my breath though, still many on here saying they'll never 'give up' eating meat. However, if they had to rear & kill it themselves....
