To have these kind of dinners when DH is away?

DaphneeBridgerton · 23/06/2022 20:03

Backstory: I do have anxiety and depression which is a lot worse since having DD 14 months ago, am starting fluoxetine tomorrow and have had various types of therapy but investigating more

So I think I’m second-guessing myself / looking for a bit of reassurance but do want to keep it lighthearted if possible!

Whenever DH is away overnight for work (once or twice a week usually) I can never be bothered to cook myself a ‘proper’ meal…

When he’s here I will cook things like lasagne, stir fry, shepherds pie, risotto etc for us both but when left to my own devices I can’t be bothered and end up eating things like a fried egg sandwich, beans on toast or even a packet of spicy rice with some avocado on the side. I always eat but never anything really wholesome or complicated.

Also I do cook for my DD - tonight she had waffles, scrambled egg and broccoli as an example. So she’s not suffering!

Is this my depression? Is this something other people do? Or am I just lazy?! I genuinely think I just like simpler meals, my mum is very similar but I’m just wondering what other people think.

It's one of the best things about my DH having a late meeting or an event! 3 minute noodle for dinner. Or even better, baguette, cheese, chutney,
crisps and wine!

ExhaustedButHappy80 · 23/06/2022 20:24

It’s fine!
I often eat things that DH can’t stand such as mackerel or pesto 🤣
but sometimes I just have a bowl of cereal instead….

thecurtainsofdestiny · 23/06/2022 20:25

I have a fish finger sandwich for tea when DH is away. Plus tomato ketchup and a glass of wine.

My mother sounded horrified when she found out!

MrsTerryPratchett · 23/06/2022 20:25

Fried egg sandwiches when DH is away is one of the joys of my life.

Tomato on the side because scurvy. Grin

orwellwasright · 23/06/2022 20:25

If I lived on my own I'd just eat crisps and wine.

PrincessesRUs · 23/06/2022 20:27

I 100% do this - it's not something I worry about, it's something I actively look forward to!!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 23/06/2022 20:29

Ooh, it's been ages since DH went away! I'd either order in a bulk lot of Sichuan food or make a mountain of gyoza with a soy sauce dip. Supermarket pizzas also featured heavily.

RedCarsGoFaster · 23/06/2022 20:31

Living with DH is the only reason I cook properly. When I lived alone it was pizzas, ready meals, cheese toasties, toast and butter etc. I rarely cooked a meal from scratch.

N0RKS · 23/06/2022 20:34

I don’t cook, DH is a BRILLIANT cook.
When he is not here I roam around the kitchen mournfully snacking on scraps and eating a slice of ham and a lump of cheese over the sink.

I am a proper functioning adult, really. I just can’t be arsed to cook just for me

Titsywoo · 23/06/2022 20:35

If I can't be arsed I make chicken instant noodles and add grated cheese till it melts and pesto. Eat it straight out of the saucepan 😁

PerseverancePays · 23/06/2022 20:35

When the last child finally, finally, finally left home I ate soup and sandwiches pretty much for two years straight. After a quarter of a century of bringing them up I just did not want to plan another meal ever again.

orwellwasright · 23/06/2022 20:25

If I lived on my own I'd just eat crisps and wine.

😂love this

TokenGinger · 23/06/2022 20:37

I'm the same. I'd be happy with scrambled eggs on toast when DP isn't here. It just doesn't seem worth the hassle of making an elaborate meal for one.

I often have frozen southern fried chicken fillets in the freezer which cook quite quickly in the air fryer and have them on a wrap with cheese and bbq sauce.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 23/06/2022 20:38

Those are the best meals!

I'm having half an olive and cheese burek and three nectarines for dinner tonight, and I couldn't be more pleased. I cooked a proper meal for DS too, but I want burek.

Dashel · 23/06/2022 20:41

I have pancakes when DH is away for work 😄

My favourite tea when I’m home alone? Wine and crisps!

Actually snorted at this with my mouth full of wine and the crisps in the oven (well nachos)

I'm having salmon (he complains about the smell) and nachos

BetsyBigNose · 23/06/2022 20:46

Perfectly fine! DH does nearly all the cooking, but left to my own devices it's toast or a sandwich if I'm home alone, and the kids might get some cheesy pasta or something I can take out of the freezer and bung in the oven if they're lucky!

MargosKaftan · 23/06/2022 20:47

I tend to eat with the dcs when dh is away.

Otherwise, as you know this is a regular thing, when you are cooking for you both when he's here, can you make extra and freeze a couple of portions? An instant meal of a frozen lasagna but one you made that you know is full of veg etc. (Although I dont think shepperds pie freezes well, the mash goes wrong. You can freeze just the base in plastic tupperwear in a single portion size then add mash on top)

RedOrange21 · 23/06/2022 20:47

I'm having crisps and wine right now! I did eat a bit of left over cucumber from kids plate earlier and a few bits with head im the fridge so they don't count.

Rainbowshit · 23/06/2022 20:49

I do this when DH is away. I'll cook something for the kids but just have toast myself as I don't feel the need for a proper meal.

RestingPandaFace · 23/06/2022 20:49

It’s a well documented thing. I remember as a young military wife getting a mind-numbingly patronising lecture at something or other about eating properly and not relying on cruise food!

housemaus · 23/06/2022 20:50

I go feral when DH is away. He does all the cooking - I can cook but I find no interest in it. So when he's away it's cereal, scrambled eggs on toast, fish finger sandwiches, a whole Angel Delight and nothing else.

Sanfranciscobabe · 23/06/2022 20:50

I do the same, ever the kids say they love the ‘simple dinners’ when we’re alone. I always just eat with them when he’s away so baked potatoes & beans, scrambled egg on toast, fish finger sandwiches

if no kids to feed I mostly have cereal

CrabPuff · 23/06/2022 20:50

My dinner was Dairylea… I couldn’t even be bothered with crackers.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 23/06/2022 20:50

Best part about DP being away is being able to feed the kids freezer food/batched cooked food and having a bowl of cereal for my dinner.

Last time he was away for 5 nights i lived on frosties and cheese on toast
