To think 2 weeks is an unusually long summer holiday?

How long do you take off on holiday if you go away over summer - particularly if you work full time?

I think half a month is a long time to expect to just walk out of a job and them to carry on without you.

But is that what most people take?

I think 2 weeks is completely normal for a holiday in my places of work anyway.

MotherOfDragons27 · 23/06/2022 18:25

I think it’s pretty normal tbh. Especially now when people may have he to wait two years for a holiday, they’re going to want to make the most of it. I would only be able to handle a week but that’s me. It’s not unusual, especially if going abroad.

Does your workplace not have cover for holidays?

SandyWedges · 23/06/2022 18:25

Some places insist you take 2 weeks in a row at some point as a fraud prevention measure

PriamFarrl · 23/06/2022 18:25

Two weeks is fairly standard, surely.

worriedatthistime · 23/06/2022 18:25

Yes what most take I would imagine and what most companies expect , only 3 weeks or more have I worked at a company that would see that amount as special consideration
2 weeks in the summer is totally normally and jobs can cope without staff its a job after all not a live animal

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 23/06/2022 18:25

I would consider that normal. Many in my job take 3-5 weeks if visiting family overseas.

RevoltingHumanHead · 23/06/2022 18:25

Walk out of a job? Such dramatic language. Are you an irate employer?

Two weeks is the standard length for a summer holiday. I can't imagine caring how work are coping without me whilst I'm having a grand old time on some lovely Greek island!

Xmasbaby11 · 23/06/2022 18:26

Totally normal in the UK. Dh and I both take 3 weeks off in the summer and go away for 2 of them.

I know people who go away for 3 weeks plus, and kids have 6 weeks off.

PeppaPigIsBacon · 23/06/2022 18:26

We have to take 2 weeks at some point in the year. But even in jobs where it wasn’t required, most people did - it’s always been totally standard IME (and no problem taking longer, in most places, given sufficient notice)

liverpoolgal82 · 23/06/2022 18:26

Two weeks has always been the normal over the years but as holidays got more expensive over the years we would do a week or ten days.
if it’s days you’re entitled to then yes you can and should go off and relax for two weeks. It’s not walking out, it’s taking entitled leave and if they can’t cope without then perhaps they need more training or more staff? 🤷‍♀️

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 23/06/2022 18:26

You're totally wrong!

Allinadayswork80 · 23/06/2022 18:26

Fairly standard, I don’t because I prefer to spread my annual leave throughout the year rather than take half at once. But growing up we always had a 2 week holiday in the summer every year and many do.

RevoltingHumanHead · 23/06/2022 18:26

Was so much easier when people only got every other Sunday off work.

GearBots · 23/06/2022 18:26

Two weeks completely normal in my work - in fact lots take three weeks. For us August is the quietest time of year so a good time to take leave

StopFeckingFaffing · 23/06/2022 18:26

2 weeks is perfectly reasonable I would say, anything longer than 2 weeks I would expect to require some level of negotiation and might be rejected if other staff also wanting to take annual leave

HelpIneedsomebodywontyouplease · 23/06/2022 18:27

Two weeks off work but, if having an actual holiday, I would only go abroad for a max of 10 nights or go away in the U.K. for 7 nights.

RaininSummer · 23/06/2022 18:27

How does it prevent fraud? 2 weeks is normal though andy employer prefers it.

feathermucker · 23/06/2022 18:27

2 weeks is perfectly normal. Nothing odd about taking holiday you're entitled to! If your holiday request has been agreed, then it's up to work to find cover.

Are you pissed off because a colleague or employee is taking leave?

WimpoleHat · 23/06/2022 18:28

A lot of jobs insist you take a fortnight once a year with no access to systems as it prevents fraud. Pretty standard length of time for a summer holiday.

Happylittlethoughts · 23/06/2022 18:28

👀 2 week holiday is completely normal. Why couldn't your workplace survive without you? Are you in UK?

Applegreenb · 23/06/2022 18:28

I had two weeks in may and have two weeks in august 😳

SandyWedges · 23/06/2022 18:28

It's easier to spot when something stops happening for 2 weeks than if someone is off for a day or two here and there. Easier to pinpoint the culprit.

bloodywhitecat · 23/06/2022 18:29

It was completely normal for people to take a two week break when I was employed.

Ted27 · 23/06/2022 18:29

fairly average surely?
I have the first week of July off, back for two weeks, then 2 and a bit weeks off. My boss has 3 weeks, when she comes back her deputy goes for 2 weeks.

rifling · 23/06/2022 18:29

I think it's standard in the UK. I'm very lucky that I have school holidays off but when I was working in an office, a lot of us took 2 weeks.
