To think 2 weeks is an unusually long summer holiday?

How long do you take off on holiday if you go away over summer - particularly if you work full time?

I think half a month is a long time to expect to just walk out of a job and them to carry on without you.

But is that what most people take?

Prepare yourself @PrettyLittleCryer my husband is taking 24 days this year - it’s always around 3 weeks.

He is self employed and plans his year round it.

But we go back to his home country - we have a seaside place. See family etc we have a wedding to go too, plus offer condolences to another relative and I’m pretty sure another baby will have been born.

Need to live a bit. Feels like retirement - chilled. You should try it.

I've worked in several European countries. 3 consecutive weeks holiday in the summer has almost always been the norm - people are considered odd if they only take 2 weeks unless they are saving a week for a house move/honeymoon/anniversary etc. In some places I've worked, employees get 6 or even 7 weeks annual leave (and quite often finish work at midday on Fridays).

MumUndone · 23/06/2022 19:15

What now?

RaspberryParfait · 23/06/2022 19:17

DH has taken 3 weeks off every late July/August for the past 10 years. No special consideration, he just books a year in advance.

Thus is my first summer back to work after being a SAHM for 15 years and we’re abroad for 3 weeks as usual. As I WFH part time, I’ve taken 6 days off and will work the other days while we’re away with agreement from my manager. Just been away for 10 days so don’t want to use up all my holiday!

Mellowyellow222 · 23/06/2022 19:17

Are you in the States OP?

I am taking nearly three weeks this year. I moved house last summer as was only able to take 2 days off. So this year I am taking a good block.

burnout is real - and we all need a proper rest.

is your employer not supportive of a work life balance? Are you in a management role? I hope not.

FelicityFlops · 23/06/2022 19:17

I usually go on holiday for 3 weeks, sometimes 4 - shock, horror!
However I am contractor, so this is not unreasonable.
No point in going for less than 3 weeks as you do not relax enough.
Our parents always took us on holiday for 3 weeks.
When I had a "family" we used to go for 3 weeks, although once it was 2 weeks.

Rewis · 23/06/2022 19:18

4-5 weeks in my work place. I'll be taking few 2 week stints instead if one long one.

Léighméleabhair · 23/06/2022 19:19

I used to get 8 weeks annual leave and took 3-4 weeks off end August/beginning September every year plus at least 2 weeks over Christmas.

Rewis · 23/06/2022 19:19

In a lot of countries its mandatory to take a minimum of 2 weeks in a row.

JassyRadlett · 23/06/2022 19:20

Two weeks is totally normal everywhere I've worked. People tend to take the longest time off over the summer holidays - many because they need childcare but also because they want to get away for a good long period.

I'm taking three weeks this year to see family abroad. No eyebrows raised.

But we do structure our work and our workplace to ensure that people can take their leave entitlements in ways that are meaningful to them.

If no one could ever take more than a week at a time, that's an end to most longer-haul travel, both for holiday and for families to see each other.

Berthatydfil · 23/06/2022 19:23

You’re wrong as many up thread have already said. I have regularly taken 3 weeks when my dc were younger and we were camping around France and Spain.

k1233 · 23/06/2022 19:23

I like to take my leave as a minimum 3weeks, prefer 5weeks. Took 3months (we get long service leave in Australia) when I got my puppy and that was blissful - and super fun because, you know, puppy!

Two weeks, to me, is a waste of leave as I'm just starting to not think of work and I have to go back. Got 5weeks off soon and really looking forward to it.

SunshineCocktails · 23/06/2022 19:24

This is going to end up being a reverse.

Darbs76 · 23/06/2022 19:24

erm 2wks is normal. I’ve taken 3 before. Annual leave is part of your allowance, you’re not expecting them to survive with you, it’s tough - they need to plan for covering AL

Libertybear80 · 23/06/2022 19:24

Eh!?

Bayleaf25 · 23/06/2022 19:25

I’m taking 3 weeks and we don’t need special consideration as long as it’s booked with plenty of notice (I gave almost a years notice).

Rewis · 23/06/2022 19:25

Actually...does op mean taking time off in general in the summer or specifically taking time off to fly on holiday to Malaga? It shouldn't make a difference whether 2 weeks is appropriate or not but I'm unclear on the question.

Nothappyatwork · 23/06/2022 19:25

Landrover actually shut the factories down for 2 weeks do no choice there.

But I most definitely will take two weeks at the end of the summer Hun enjoy every moment of it the world will continue to time without me.

InChocolateWeTrust · 23/06/2022 19:26

Totally normal? Most work can wait 2 weeks, unless you work in things like emergency services but then other people cover shifts.

In a corporate environment my experience is that August (in Western countries) is often very quiet with few big projects or deadlines, so being away a couple of weeks makes no difference.

Thepowerofthelook · 23/06/2022 19:27

I worked in the NHS, for 3 different trusts they all had the same rule 'upto a maximum of two weeks annual leave over July /August'. So quite normal in my world.

Snoredoeurve · 23/06/2022 19:28

2 weeks in the summer completely the norm.
I dont " walk out" Op

I bloody skip out !Grin

Staffy1 · 23/06/2022 19:28

If going anywhere, 2 weeks minimum, if it’s to somewhere at the other side of the world, 3 is preferable.

Fenella123 · 23/06/2022 19:30

I had a friend who worked for a big oil company and they HAD to take off at least one continuous stretch of 2 weeks or more every year - a regulation aimed at preve5 burnout.

Fenella123 · 23/06/2022 19:30

*preventing

Lochjeda · 23/06/2022 19:30

In my job I finish up in tomorrow I couldn't take two weeks in summer as I solely run the office, do the book keeping, manage the engineers diaries etc. We do just for two weeks at Christmas. In the role I am moving to I will be able to.
