To think 2 weeks is an unusually long summer holiday?

How long do you take off on holiday if you go away over summer - particularly if you work full time?

I think half a month is a long time to expect to just walk out of a job and them to carry on without you.

But is that what most people take?

How does it prevent fraud? 2 weeks is normal though andy employer prefers it.

I think the theory is that processes tend to run fairly regularly, so if you’re up to something dodgy you might be able to hide it for one week but less likely to be able to hide it for two weeks!

Wilkolampshade · 23/06/2022 18:29

We haven't had a holiday for six or seven years 🙁 but before that 2 weeks would have been normal yes. But then we didn't have any other time off in the year apart from Christmas closures and Bank hols.
You sound cross OP. Your use of 'half a month' and 'just walk out of a job' seem quite loaded? Has someone pissed you off at work?

reluctantbrit · 23/06/2022 18:30

I have to take two weeks in a row at least once a year, last year I even did it twice (Summer and October).

if you need more than two weeks you have to apply with very good reasons.

Our main holiday is always two weeks away.

If an employer/workplace can’t cope for 2 weeks then that’s their problem and not the employees who’s taken annual leave.

I wouldn’t want to work anywhere where the company frowns upon 2 weeks leave. Very toxic culture. We work to live, not live to work.

Aposterhasnoname · 23/06/2022 18:31

Perfectly normal and insisted on where I work, so people get a proper rest. DH works in finance, and as others have said, he has to take two weeks at least once a year for fraud prevention.

Hugasauras · 23/06/2022 18:31

My company asks you to take two weeks together in the summer block.

tealandteal · 23/06/2022 18:31

Presumably the leave is booked in advance and the person finishes up jobs and hands over on their last day, rather than just “walking out”

comealongponds · 23/06/2022 18:31

YABU

2 weeks is perfectly normal

I tend to only take a week or week and a half at a time but only because I prefer to spread my holiday over the year and I don’t go on long haul holidays

Hiya IANA HR bod or a forensic accountant or anything but I understand that people who are habitually/regularly skimming their employer don't take leave because the plot might be uncovered in their absence. There are cases most years where the secretary of the playgroup or admin person at the car showroom gets caught faking invoices blah blah. In fact wasn't there a high profile very high level NHS trtust accountant caught dipping in the pot a while ago? So the short answer is, yes, a method of fraud prevention.

It's easier to spot when something stops happening for 2 weeks than if someone is off for a day or two here and there. Easier to pinpoint the culprit.

That's really interesting! Never thought of that before. Thanks for taking trouble to explain.

Rebelmcstreettuff · 23/06/2022 18:32

Strange post.
Round my way the last week in July and first week in August is commonly know as factory fortnight when the big car manufacturers shut down.

Gwenhwyfar · 23/06/2022 18:32

Are you American?
Two weeks is normal. I'm more or less obliged to take two weeks during the quiet time.

FreeButtonBee · 23/06/2022 18:33

I am taking 3 weeks this summer - did the same last year. I just about decompress in the final week.

I get 6 weeks holiday plus BH and can buy another 5 days' leave so they better suck up the staffing issues. They don't pay us market rates so i better get my holidays uninterrupted...

MrszClaus · 23/06/2022 18:33

Seems normal to me! I go away for two weeks next week.

Have you been asked to cover for a colleague for two weeks? 😂

Regularsizedrudy · 23/06/2022 18:33

Yabu

pompomseverywhere · 23/06/2022 18:33

Are you an employer?

GreatCrash · 23/06/2022 18:34

Normal to take two weeks IME.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 23/06/2022 18:34

Two weeks is very normal. I used to take three weeks occasionally when I went to visit family in Australia

I'm self-employed now but I always close for two weeks at Christmas, ten days over Easter and two weeks every summer.

waterlego · 23/06/2022 18:34

We tend to only do a week in the summer so that we have plenty of AL to use at other times of the year for other holidays (Easter or half term) as well as long weekends away etc. But taking a two week summer holiday is very common and completely fine as far as I’m concerned.

FloraGreysteel · 23/06/2022 18:35

It's normal. Three might be a stretch.

Goneback2school · 23/06/2022 18:35

Two weeks is normal. This year I am taking three, one in July and two in August. Can't wait for them.

TheAverageUser · 23/06/2022 18:35

Totally normal, people work to live. Are you the employer?

minuette1 · 23/06/2022 18:35

This is such a strange attitude, your employer doesn't own you and if business will grind to a halt without one of the workers then there are bigger problems afoot. It's perfectly normal to take two weeks (or more) off in one go, and that was the norm when I was growing up in the late 80s too. You seem to think people's time off work should be limited - so you are saying you don't think people should ever take a long haul trip?

supertedlasso · 23/06/2022 18:37

Weird thread.

butterflied · 23/06/2022 18:37

It's absolutely normal. Your language around it is not.
