To think 2 weeks is an unusually long summer holiday?

How long do you take off on holiday if you go away over summer - particularly if you work full time?

I think half a month is a long time to expect to just walk out of a job and them to carry on without you.

But is that what most people take?

I’ve just been off for two weeks.
a way for 1 plus a day off either side. Would mean going back in on Thursday/fri which I was prepared to do, but childcare fell through those days so I had to take them off anyway. My colleagues didn’t bat an eyelid. They are regularly off for one week at a time, sometimes 2 weeks. I work full time in a demanding nhs admin job. I hadn’t been away for ages before and won’t for ages after so im hardly taking the piss... I think/hope

Peridot1 · 23/06/2022 18:38

Two weeks is completely normal.

FlibbertyGiblets · 23/06/2022 18:40

And yes, two weeks off is perfectly standard.

Pfffft at WALKING OUT for two weeks, dramatic much?

Staff don't just 'walk out'. Leave is requested and agreed, some might say 'booked'. HTH

IsAnybodyListening · 23/06/2022 18:40

Eh? We are going abroard for 18 nights in a few weeks. Totally normal to use annual leave how you want.

Rockbird · 23/06/2022 18:40

I sometimes think these OPs have just landed from Mars, the strange questions they ask.

It's very normal to take 2 weeks off, always has been.

Fizbosshoes · 23/06/2022 18:41

When I was a kid we always used to have a 2 week holiday in the summer. Now as an adult we very rarely do because DH is self employed and can't generally take that long. But I wouldn't be at all surprised at other people going away for 2 weeks, it's a fairly normal length of holiday IMO.

LilyMarshall · 23/06/2022 18:41

half a month

it is only half of February, and who wants a two week summer holiday in February?

ApolloandDaphne · 23/06/2022 18:42

It's completely normal. We sometimes do three weeks!

JaninaDuszejko · 23/06/2022 18:42

Last year one of my team took all of August off to visit their family abroad. We have vague rules in place at work about the amount of notice you give for annual leave but they are mainly to stop people taking the piss.

EarthquakesinEastActon · 23/06/2022 18:42

Entirely normal. I get full leave entitlement for long service, so 30 days plus 3 compulsory at Christmas, plus bank holidays.

I take 2 weeks in June, make Christmas up to about three weeks, use a week in September, and then use the rest in odd days for long weekends or things where I need to do something personal that involves being physically somewhere else during working hours.

A week is never really enough to actually relax, forget work and start sleeping properly. 2 weeks together is a perfectly normal way of doing things.

Pebble55 · 23/06/2022 18:43

Normal for us here in Germany. Some people take three weeks at certain times of the year. Our childcare closes for two weeks in late summer anyway, and we will be away in Zell am See for the full two. Can't wait

stargirl1701 · 23/06/2022 18:43

2 weeks is normal in the UK, OP.

lovescats3 · 23/06/2022 18:43

Odd thread.2 weeks is normal

motogirl · 23/06/2022 18:43

2 weeks is a normal length holiday

2 weeks is completely standard. You have to have a life.

WorriedMillie · 23/06/2022 18:44

Totally normal, lots of people take 2 weeks off where I work and we manage just fine!

PeekAtYou · 23/06/2022 18:44

I think one week is short, 2 weeks is normal and 3 weeks is a long holiday.

FemmeNatal · 23/06/2022 18:44

Two weeks is normal. My husband is forced to have a two week period out each yer, with no contact with the office, so we tend to use that for our summer holiday.

Some places insist you take 2 weeks in a row at some point as a fraud prevention measure

Lots of banks do this and while you are off your checked for any fraud etc. Where I work people take three weeks at a time we get lots of AL. It's encouraged to promote good work life balance.

Friendship101 · 23/06/2022 18:44

I go away for 2 weeks but take 2.5 weeks off work and maybe a few odd days too over the summer

jay55 · 23/06/2022 18:45

RaininSummer · 23/06/2022 18:27

How does it prevent fraud? 2 weeks is normal though andy employer prefers it.

It came in after Nick Leeson, the theory being no one can hide a fraud for two weeks.

Louise0701 · 23/06/2022 18:45

14-17 nights is normal IMO. 1 weeks holiday is never long enough. 10 nights if it’s a short school half term.

teenagetantrums · 23/06/2022 18:45

Yes two weeks is totally normal. Now l don't have kids to factor in l like to take 5 separate weeks spread over year. But all the parents at my work place book at least two weeks in summer holidays

Ylvamoon · 23/06/2022 18:46

Totally normal.

I gess OP has to cover severalcolleagues for their 2 wweks summer holidays. Hence the ... just walk out of a job and them to carry on without you

Stevienickssnickers · 23/06/2022 18:46

I once had 4 weeks off. I got back, the place was still going. Incredible.

This summer I've got two weeks off, one week in, another week off.
