I am no fan of the current government but if you seriously believe it is anything approaching fascist then you really need to get a grip. Also bear in mind how your comments might strike victims of genuine fascist regimes.

@TullyApplebottom
Fascism: I sometimes fear...

I sometimes fear that
people think that fascism arrives in fancy dress
worn by grotesques and monsters
as played out in endless re-runs of the Nazis.

Fascism arrives as your friend.
It will restore your honour,
make you feel proud,
protect your house,
give you a job,
clean up the neighbourhood,
remind you of how great you once were,
clear out the venal and the corrupt,
remove anything you feel is unlike you...

It doesn't walk in saying,
"Our programme means militias, mass imprisonments, transportations, war and persecution."

Who people here are saying ought to be listened to without, it seems, recognising the limitations of his role and perspective.

What limitations? His job is to get the best deal possible for his members, using strike action where necessary. That’s what he is doing.

I think it's interesting that everyone is so surprised that a left wing union leader should be intelligent and articulate. It says a lot about how this country views working class people.

He is the exception to the rule. Most union leaders I have seen are no different to politicians repeating the party line and not answering questions. Whereas he seems knowlegable and able to think on his feet.

WatchoRulo · 23/06/2022 14:48

It wasn't Britain isn't working - it was "labour isn't working" and it was a fucking irony as unemployment was soon more than doubled under the Tories.

Nope, sorry. Claiming the current government is fascist is an insult to victims of fascism everywhere, and posting bad poetry doesn’t change that.

Blimey. What a lot of questions for someone who it's got fuck all to do with.

Hmm. Your refusal to actually engage with the substance of any of the points raised on the thread while simultaneously claiming that people don't dare air right wing views makes me wonder if you've deeply confused the concept of 'not allowed' with the idea of 'allowed to be questioned and challenged.'

Why not engage on the issues?

SafeMove · 23/06/2022 14:49

Interesting that there are two posters determined to shift focus onto the 'left wing versus right wing' narrative. Taking a working collectives action (many of them in the 'red wall' that fell to the conservatives) and trying to twist it into partisan politics is very 2015 Cambridge Analytica and Dominic Cummings. Get into 2022.

I’ve only heard him on Today and he sounded like an absolutely typical 70s/80s trade union specimen. No one other than he and his members matters.
but I am old, old enough to remember when people like him had too much power and were bringing the country to its knees

Load of shite, I’m old enough too. It’s what needs to happen to reset our country into a humane and compassionate society with a strong sense of social justice and .. yes.. dignity. Because the lot in no 10 are a dignified as a pile of shite

That's an insult to the dignity of piles of shite, that is.

That’s right. So we need to take his claims with a pinch of salt, don’t we, rather than fawn over him and make out he’s the man with the answers?

the80sweregreat · 23/06/2022 14:50

Starmer isn't supporting him or his union. Keeping quite.
Corbyn probably would have done and the likes of the DM / Sun would have gone mad over that position.
The current government are leaving it to Shapps!
Labour isn't working , sorry ( although I can picture the poster in my head)

RevoltingHumanHead · 23/06/2022 14:51

The whole Mick Lynch thing of the past couple of days really demonstrates what a narrow range of people we see on our TVs and hear on our radios. 9 times out of 10 it's media trained, privately educated politicians and media trained privately educated pundits. It's been so refreshing to listen to someone who isn't either of these things.

TullyApplebottom · 23/06/2022 14:50

What has he done or said that needs to be taken with a pinch of salt?

BurnishedSteel · 23/06/2022 14:53

It’s notable that his critics seem intent on playing the man rather than the ball. Comments on how he’s a “specimen” and they hate him; comments about bringing the country to its knees, chaos. Very little actual comment on the issues in the strike or explaining why he’s wrong.

DontBlameMe79 · 23/06/2022 14:53

Don’t agree with his politics, but hats off he’s been awesome for his side.

JimTheShit · 23/06/2022 14:53

I support him; he's great. Doesn't get intimidated by the likes of Piers Morgan. Yep, I'd want him in my corner. (I'm "wealthy" and right of centre, by the way)

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/06/2022 14:54

He's brilliant and his plain speaking says it like it is. No waffle or blather.

Wouldloveanother · 23/06/2022 14:52

All of them. All of them need to be examined sceptically bearing in mind he advocates for a very narrow set of interests. rather than fawning over him because he manages to make piers Morgan look stupid which lets face it, my hamster could manage

antelopevalley · 23/06/2022 14:57

He is obviously very intelligent and articulate and knows his stuff. It was a relief seeing someone being interviewed who understands the subject he is talking about and can calmly and intelligently answer even goady questions.
This is how our Prime Minister should be, instead, we get uhms and ahs and Peppa Pig.

I don’t think people are fawning over him because he makes Piers Morgan look stupid. They’re praising him as it heartens people to see somebody fighting hard for the rights of people downtrodden by years of Conservative government. And hoping they will have a representative like him themselves at some stage.

antelopevalley · 23/06/2022 15:01

In terms of what you think about what he says, you need to listen to anyone and weigh up what they tell you. No one is neutral, no one.
but he has facts and figures and speaks plainly rather than hiding behind meaningless phrases and digging questions.
Boris Johnson can not give a straight answer to any question without lying. Most of the electorate knows he lies, again and again.
I know who I would believe more.

which people are those, exactly? Compared to many in the private sector - who lynch doesn’t give a crap about - his members are well paid.

Nope, sorry. Ignoring an incipient slide into fascism and pretending everything is tickety boo is an insult to victims of fascism. We all need to be alert to the warning signs and right now they are flashing.

BoreOfWhabylon · 23/06/2022 15:01

He's going to be on Question Time tonight. I'm really looking forward to it.

antelopevalley · 23/06/2022 15:01

Recognising someone is intelligent and articulate is not fawning over him.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 23/06/2022 15:01

Yeah, l thought it was an insult to piles of shite too. But l couldn’t think of anything worse.
