I'm old too. I remember the unions before Thatcher started to remove their powers and their ability to fight for their members.

thou shouldst not have been old till thou hadst been wise

Georgeskitchen · 23/06/2022 14:08

Putin sympathiser

Crack on

Do you want to provide evidence of that?

balalake · 23/06/2022 14:10

I disagree with the strikes. However, Mick Lynch is an articulate man, representing his members professionally and someone you would want on your side in any argument/negotiation.

A contrast with the inept government and the serial lying Prime Minister and Transport Secretary.

TullyApplebottom · 23/06/2022 14:09

Take your King Lear quote and shove it.

Successive governments after Thatcher have done their utmost to castrate the unions.

UndertheEagle · 23/06/2022 14:16

I think it's interesting that everyone is so surprised that a left wing union leader should be intelligent and articulate. It says a lot about how this country views working class people.

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 23/06/2022 14:16

He was brilliant in each and every interview. Kay was awful and so was Pierce Morgan. #Mick4PM

the80sweregreat · 23/06/2022 14:16

If they keep up the momentum through the summer or they end up getting what they want then more strikes elsewhere might start to happen. It's a delicate situation and I can see all sides to this ( despite actually liking ML and how he comes across when he is interviewed and making some of the media pundits squirm etc)
Strikes are bad and it is the last resort , but sometimes it's the only way to make people listen. None of it is good. The government doesn't want to give public sector workers more money which is why they are probably hoping these strikes will fizzle out without too much intervention from them as they know it'll escalate if this does work. Bit of a tightrope all round. It's the general public that loses out the most too of course.
Very tricky all round.

@TullyApplebottom

In terms of a fascistic society, how about:-

  1. Ignoring the rule of law (it's those "Lefty lawyers")
  2. Removal of rights which were specifically designed to protect the individual against the State (current plans to replace the ECHR with a Bill Of Rights that actually reduces rights)
  3. Lying to Parliament (ignoring democratic norms)
  4. Focusing on the "enemy at the gates" - i.e. picking fights with external enemies, and then claiming that anyone who does not support you is a traitor ("Enemy of the People")
    ... etc

I’ve only heard him on Today and he sounded like an absolutely typical 70s/80s trade union specimen. No one other than he and his members matters.
but I am old, old enough to remember when people like him had too much power and were bringing the country to its knees.

Well perhaps you should listen to him a bit more and make an honest unbiased assessment. Calling him or any human being a specimen is nasty and yes he has spoken out about how people are being treated outwith his union members. The country IS on it's knees, failing NHS, failing education system, the rich getting richer, food banks everywhere, homelessness rife, need I go on...... and it's not Mick Lynch and people like him (whatever that means) that are responsible.

SofiaSoFar · 23/06/2022 14:20

GreyTS · 23/06/2022 13:56

Oh can you not stand him? How do you mean, like him personally or what he represents? What particularly offends you, or do you just write him off as left wing and therefore not for you? Are you a wealthy self employed person who identifies as middle or upper class? Will you never need recourse to a party or person who will defend you? Honestly I am Irish and know very little about this man or the bizarre state of current British politics. I'm just intrigued by the sort of people who identify as right wing (??) with very little nuance, just as a defensive mechanism

Blimey. What a lot of questions for someone who it's got fuck all to do with.

SofiaSoFar · 23/06/2022 14:21

@Intheflicker

Its not left biased and people frequently air right wing views here.

Fucking hell. 😂

You of course are entitled not to care for him but the rest of your post is bullshit.

Thank you!

Yours too. Flowers

Typical lefty, awful manners

Typical Tory, obsessed with "manners" but absolutely no human regard for other people whatsoever.

I am no fan of the current government but if you seriously believe it is anything approaching fascist then you really need to get a grip. Also bear in mind how your comments might strike victims of genuine fascist regimes.

To that poster, maybe.

But in my case I've never spoken to you and you felt it ok to say my post is "bullshit".

So yes, I think "awful manners" sums you up quite well.

TullyApplebottom · 23/06/2022 14:30

Greensleeves · 23/06/2022 14:24

Typical Tory, obsessed with "manners" but absolutely no human regard for other people whatsoever.

Again, a very typical left wing attitude. Failing to endorse the likes of mr lynch does not necessarily equate to unconcern with humanity at large. One reason why the left fails so badly in electoral terms is its refusal to acknowledge that those who disagree might not be bad people.

limitedperiodonly · 23/06/2022 14:30

Oh yes. This is a good interview and by Nick Robinson who people persist in calling a Tory shill. It is a very civilised and informative conversation.

It also addresses those false "Putin sympathiser" accusations that I see have cropped up on this thread. I won't spoil it except to say that people are very desperate. It must be because they don't look things up for themselves or don't think the rest of us will.

Or maybe they are just scared and desperate.

It’s the left wing mentality. They don’t do democracy. Agree or be cast out.
it fails time and again at the ballot box. But they won’t stop, for some reason.
