The fence that belongs to our neighbour is only a low wire for half the garden and then one panel that rotting and falling down and large gap that we have to cover with a huge plant plot to keep their dog out of our garden.
our neighbours have just had renovations done to their home, a new extension, new patio etc.
but they haven’t replaced the fence.
they sit out all day long in their underwear sunbathing.
my children can’t use the paddling pool, I can’t even garden because it feels too awkward.
for 7 years I’ve felt like I’ve shared a garden.
we can’t afford to replace the fence ourselves.
is it unreasonable to ask that they replace their broken fence seeing as they insist on sunbathing half naked everyday? what Would you do?

YANBU to want your neighbour to keep their fence in good repair. YABU for objecting to them sunbathing in their own garden - it's not like they're wandering around naked.

I would worry more about their dog getting into your garden, particularly as you have children. I would ask them to repair the fence as you're worried the dog might come into your garden, which is potentially dangerous for your children.

TokyoTen · 22/06/2022 19:14

I'd just use my garden! Why would you not?

willstarttomorrow · 22/06/2022 19:15

Whatever you do OP- never try and use a sauna complex in Germany/Netherlands or Scandanavia with your children. They may be exposed to a really healthy attitude to actual nudity.

FemmeNatal · 22/06/2022 19:26

Wow, you had better never go for a beach holiday in Europe if this upsets you.

Staffy1 · 22/06/2022 19:29

No it’s not unreasonable to ask them to replace their broken fence. Even without having to see them in their underwear, they should be the ones stopping their dog from getting into your garden, it shouldn’t be up to you to have to stop it with a large pot. If you used your garden more and got your kids to as well it might encourage them to put some clothes on.

Grumpusaurus · 22/06/2022 19:34

Good grief! You sound quite a few peonies short of a cottage garden!

Superslide · 22/06/2022 19:36

Pay the kids a fiver for the winner of a competition for the person who can stand and stare at the neighbours the longest when they're sunbathing. Might make them want to cover up 😁

But, no, they're not naked. Wouldn't bother me in the slightest, I'd just give them a cheery wave and enjoy my own garden.

TheWayoftheLeaf · 22/06/2022 19:37

Do you mean in swimwear? Are any delicate places actually showing?

If not it won't harm your kids. It's just bodies. And not genitals. Chill.

FemmeNatal · 22/06/2022 19:41

Is it illegal in the UK to be topless or naked in your own garden?

godmum56 · 22/06/2022 19:44

Basilbrushgotfat · 22/06/2022 16:41

Yabu

You can ask them to replace their broken panel, but rest is on you.

Pick up some willow or bamboo screening to cover your side.
Or some trellis
Put tall plants (bamboo in pots is easiest) for extra privacy
Chill out

They're not doing anything wrong sitting outside. And they're not naked.

You can ask but unless there is a covenant that requires a fence then they don't have to do a thing. However, you as a dog owner, do have a duty to keep your dog from straying...basically get your own fence or suck it up

Is it illegal in the UK to be topless or naked in your own garden?

From Google

"According to GOV.co.uk, the law states that it is not a criminal offence to sunbathe naked in public as long as it doesn't cause distress or alarm to other people."

godmum56 · 22/06/2022 19:45

Oh sorry its their dog! I misread. In that case they have a duty to stop their dog straying.

SausageAndCash · 22/06/2022 19:49

Why on earth can’t your kids go in the paddling pool?

Get the pool out, plus a wide range of water toys, super soakers etc.

Invite other kids to play.

They will put up a fence within the week.

Seriously, use your garden. Let the kids use your garden.

whynotwhatknot · 22/06/2022 19:49

The only point youve got is their dog keeps coming in thats their reposnsibilty so ask them to fix their fence based on that

they can wear what they like though

Thisisit2022 · 22/06/2022 19:51

Took me 12 years but last week I finally got a 6ft fence to run alongside my stupid neighbour's stupid neighbour's short fence. I will never, ever taken it for granted.

IncompleteSenten · 22/06/2022 19:52

I'd use my garden. 🤷
I'm sure it's nothing you wouldn't see at the beach.

Porcupineintherough · 22/06/2022 19:57

You know, there is nothing to stop you putting up a fence just inside your boundary.

mm40 · 22/06/2022 19:59

What a load of nonsense. Neighbours wearing at worst ‘swimming costumes’ - ie not naked. Words escape me - it doesn’t happen often.

and to add why are we ‘all’ offended by a bit of skin anyway - we all have skin.

Tee20x · 22/06/2022 20:02

Why can't you use the garden? Why can't they sit out in their underwear what's the difference between that and swimwear? Do you ever go to the beach?

Thebeastofsleep · 22/06/2022 21:19

If it bothered me I'd have built a fence.

BanjoKnockers · 22/06/2022 21:25

I mean how about you don't look at them if you find to much skin a problem.

Or if you just can't trust yourself to avoid the temptation then try wearing something like this ...

Many years ago we had neighbours where the husband paraded around their garden in tiny speedos, a low chain link fence separated our gardens. It all stopped when my 4 year old asked if he had done a poo in his pants 😂

Why did it take you 12 years? Confused
