Naked neighbours

The fence that belongs to our neighbour is only a low wire for half the garden and then one panel that rotting and falling down and large gap that we have to cover with a huge plant plot to keep their dog out of our garden.
our neighbours have just had renovations done to their home, a new extension, new patio etc.
but they haven’t replaced the fence.
they sit out all day long in their underwear sunbathing.
my children can’t use the paddling pool, I can’t even garden because it feels too awkward.
for 7 years I’ve felt like I’ve shared a garden.
we can’t afford to replace the fence ourselves.
is it unreasonable to ask that they replace their broken fence seeing as they insist on sunbathing half naked everyday? what Would you do?

Just talk to your neighbour about the fence as they should be keeping their dog in their garden. Sunbathing in their smalls is hardly a Roman orgy so don't think you need to bring that up.

(I've just been sunbathing naked in my gardenShock

Admittedly there are lots of trees & bushes so the neighbours can only see me if they are attaching a new tv aerial to their chimney but in these days of streaming, I feel pretty safe)

Pumperthepumper · 22/06/2022 18:02

I’m really surprised by these responses, I don’t think you’re being unreasonable at all. Can you plug the gap with your bins?

Youcansaythatagainandagain · 22/06/2022 18:03

Seven years is a long time to wait for a fence panel.
Surely you can get some bamboo or even fence screens and/or offer to pay half the cost of a new fence?

dawngreen · 22/06/2022 18:03

One of my pet hates is ppl who strip to their undies to go outside. Some of us were brought up to not take clothes off like that. I know its basically the same as a bikini. But they should keep their dog contained in their garden.

bloodyunicorns · 22/06/2022 18:03

@BouncyBalls - the neighbour is in a thong ON HER FRONT not in the front garden...

I don’t think I implied it’s a classy idea, but it’s free and solves the problem.

restedbutexhausted · 22/06/2022 18:07

I'd be prepared to bet that you have an issue with "private parts", that your children probably wouldn't even notice, and that if they did say something it would probably be because you have strange, outdated views about people's bodies that have worn off on them.

As a side note, if your children are use the paddling pool they're showing as much skin as the neighbours so what's the issue?

heyitsthistle · 22/06/2022 18:08

I wouldn't bat an eyelid at a neighbour in a bikini, but if they were in bra and pants I'd feel very awkward.

I think YANBU. You should approach them and ask them about it. They may not even realise it's their fence to maintain.

SecretVictoria · 22/06/2022 18:15

😂😂😂

tenterden · 22/06/2022 18:16

OP can you explain why you and your DC cannot use your garden? The fact your neighbours are in theirs NOT NAKED makes you sound a bit, erm, odd.

Do you never take them to beach/paddling pool/swimming pool/on holiday in case they see someone in similar wear?

Wheresmywoolyjumpers · 22/06/2022 18:17

Ask them to mend the fence but other than that, you need to get on with it. They are not doing anything wrong.

Is it not more likely that it’s because it’s now one open, communal space where politeness dictates having to greet each other etc?

ChocolateHippo · 22/06/2022 18:23

I'm amazed you haven't found a solution for this in 7 years. Fence panels are around £30 each - couldn't you knock up a few if it bothers you so much?

CharlotteRose90 · 22/06/2022 18:24

I wondered if you were my neighbours at first. I’ve been lying in my garden in a bikini sunbathing and saw my neighbour looking like a peeping Tom at the window. It’s sunny and I’m entitled to use my garden how I want the same as you.

tenterden · 22/06/2022 18:28

As opposed to a beach/swimming pool...???

I don't think I would even notice what my neighbours were wearing in their garden.

Yes, because those things are public places rather than private gardens.

Speakingmymind · 22/06/2022 18:33

In 7 years you've never been able to scrape together enough money for even the most shit excuse for a fence?

SophieStew · 22/06/2022 18:33

OP do you not take your DC anywhere they might see people in swimwear? I don't understand why your DC cannot use the paddling pool. There is still a low fence between the properties, so it's not a communal garden. I just don't understand - can you elaborate?

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 22/06/2022 18:46

Complete non-issue. What's the difference between underwear and a bikini?

They are in their own garden. So stop staring at them.

Anyway, who is responsible for the fence? If it's you, you can replace it anyway.

bpirockin · 22/06/2022 18:48

You are not being at all unreasonable to ask them to repair their fence, considering they have a dog. They are not being responsible pet owners. It does seem daft to be so embarrassed at them being in their undies/swimwear as to not use your own garden though.

PurpleButterflyWings · 22/06/2022 18:48

YABU to put such a ridiculously misleading thread title!

Just put your own (6 foot high) fence up if they are offending you so much, sitting in their own garden sunbathing in the SUMMER. Hmm Good Lord, they'll be wishing you Merry Christmas in December next!

As has been said, SEVEN YEARS this has been going on and you've done fuck-all about it? Confused If it's affecting your life so much, you'll find the money to get some fence panels!

Also, one click-bait first post, almost 2.5 hours ago, then nothing since. Nothing to see here. Enjoying your work are you @Sunshine10012 ??? Wink

What about a wind breaker from your side op, ? Other than that, what about averting your gaze ?
