Gary Glitter track in a spin class

SleepyMc · 16/06/2022 19:27

Complete with choreographed claps and sprints.

YABU: Why not? It's just music.
YANBU: I'd rather not, thanks.

Which track was it?

Needmorelego · 16/06/2022 19:30

Does the organiser/teacher actually know who Gary Glitter is and his background? She/he might just like the song. Have you talked to them.

Pieceofpurplesky · 16/06/2022 19:30

Gary Glitter makes you fitter ...

Totally inappropriate, however if the coach was young they may have no clue who he is?

HailAdrian · 16/06/2022 19:30

Hmm I dunno. I can sometimes 'separate the art from the artist' but not always. I'd never listen to Lost Prophets again, for example.

balalake · 16/06/2022 19:32

If you were in the class you should have tried to stop it and pointed out he is a convicted paedophile. It was 1999 when he was convicted (had to look it up) and so being unaware is possible.

SleepyMc · 16/06/2022 19:32

It was Rock and Roll.

I'm generally a "separate art from artist" person too but I think I'd just assumed no one played GG any more, so it was a surprise. Quite possible that she didn't know who he was- I'm the oldest in the class by about 20 years!

Do you wanna be in my gang, my gang, my gang

ToughLover · 16/06/2022 19:33

Depends what song it was

XenoBitch · 16/06/2022 19:35

One of his songs was in the film 'Joker'.
I tend to separate the art from the artist. It is not like he is raking in royalties from one of his tracks being played in a gym class.

FromEden · 16/06/2022 19:38

That one song of his is always played at sporting events in the US. I hate when I hear it but most people here have no clue of his crimes so I give them a pass. Not so much in the UK though, everyone knows about it

Why?

You are all adults it's not a huge problem is it?.

That one has been covered several times so the person playing it might be unaware of its origins.

Brighteyedtriangle · 16/06/2022 19:42

Tbf its more famous for the joker film now

I think it's because they are adults that they see the problem.

I always feel there’s a bit of a double standard with this. Gary Glitter / Lost Proffits are shunned (fair enough), but Michael Jackson is still played widely.

Personally I wouldn’t make a big fuss during the lesson, but maybe just have a quiet word with the instructor afterwards. They might be oblivious.

Absolutely agree with this.

I've just had a scan of Glitter's Wiki page and his crimes are abhorrent. In my opinion, it was in poor taste of the instructor to play his music.

Jackson was found not guilty. The evidence against him was fairly weak. That's a pretty big difference.

corlan · 16/06/2022 19:56

I would have complained.
I used to go to Gary Glitter concerts back in the day. Loved his music. Thought it was all great fun.
I feel pretty sick about that now. I don't know how you separate the music from the man. The man that created that music is a convicted paedophile. There's other music to listen to.

NoParticularPattern · 16/06/2022 19:57

Is the instructor likely to even know who Gary Glitter is and what he did? I know he was convicted for child sex offences but I was old enough to be sort of aware of the news coverage when he was first locked up. Anyone younger than me (and I can well imagine that a spin instructor likely will be) would potentially never have heard of him? I certainly wouldn’t know his music if it slapped me round the face even though I vaguely know of the news coverage surrounding him.

bigbluebus · 16/06/2022 19:57

I can remember rolling my eyes in similar circumstances when the then boss of the gym I went to played Gary Glitter's "I'm the leader of the gang" at a spin class.
I think he was trying to feel flattered by the line "do you wanna be in my gang" with a class full of women.
I found it hard to believe that he didn't realise it was inappropriate to play Gary Glitter music now.

Sn0tnose · 16/06/2022 19:57

I’d rather not listen to it, but if you’re going down that road, it might surprise you just how many artists and musicians have similar contact with children.

They all tend to have better back catalogues and larger, more dedicated fan bases than GG though, so it’s far more convenient to separate art from the artist in those instances.

clpsmum · 16/06/2022 20:02

I would have asked them to turn it off tbh

Where is Michael Jackson played?

Not on Irish radio stations anyway.

Mj was on in new look the other day!
