Complete with choreographed claps and sprints.

YABU: Why not? It's just music.
YANBU: I'd rather not, thanks.

I’d rather not listen to it, but if you’re going down that road, it might surprise you just how many artists and musicians have similar contact with children.

They all tend to have better back catalogues and larger, more dedicated fan bases than GG though, so it’s far more convenient to separate art from the artist in those instances.

Well you can't just drop that nugget of information in without elaborating......

cushioncovers · 16/06/2022 20:26

He's fallen from grace and serving time in prison. Someone playing a song he performed years ago wouldn't bother me.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 16/06/2022 20:29

Was it GG singing or a cover & was the song written by him?

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 16/06/2022 20:33

ToughLover · 16/06/2022 19:33

Depends what song it was

Why?

What maks one song by a revolting peado acceptable and one not? That's totally illogical, it's an all or nothing situaion.

Againstmachine · 16/06/2022 20:35

I wouldn't make a scene but mention it the person probably didn't realise. The Sam reason he's played widely at sporting events in the US.

Trulyweird1 · 16/06/2022 20:36

I would have a word with the instructor after class and point out that it is offensive to you, and you would prefer that it was not used again. If he is unaware, point him to Google.
And yes , somewhere along the line, through performing rights or whatever, if GG wrote the song, he will get royalties, even if it’s a cover.

Maybebabyno2 · 16/06/2022 20:37

It's played on a lot of films and TV shows. I would imagine thr instructor has heard the song and downloaded it for her class without a second thought. I often find songs from movies and TV shows I like and download them, couldn't tell you the artist for most of them.

Also I had no idea this was a Gary Glitter song, have heard it many many times over the years. I was 9 when he was convicted, didn't know anything about him and only knew 'My Gang's from the spice girl movie.

woodhill · 16/06/2022 20:43

Wasn't rock and roll in full Monty

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 16/06/2022 21:11

I've just had to look up the song as I couldnt place it. I had no idea this was by Glitter - and I'm 49!

I'd suggest having a word OP - instructor will probably be horrified.

Izzabellasasperella · 16/06/2022 21:15

Gary Glitter doesn't get any royalties for his music. He sold his back catalogue quite a while ago.
I don't think his music should be played anywhere. He's a convicted child abuser and I think as well as being in prison his other punishment should be the end of his music and 'celebrity'.

YouLookinSusBro · 16/06/2022 21:26

I play Rock and Roll Christmas ever year 😳 So wouldn't bother me at all

ChrisReasBathEggs · 16/06/2022 21:30

I heard R Kelly in my gym and it does make me feel queasy. It was bump and grind too 😧

People still listen to Michael Jackson though.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 16/06/2022 21:34

My exercise class had a r Kelly song although it was a dancey version I still felt uncomfortable

donquixotedelamancha · 16/06/2022 21:37

Gary Glitter doesn't get any royalties for his music. He sold his back catalogue quite a while ago.

He's still paid as writer for the songs he wrote but not as artist. There are a couple of rights enforcement schemes that might also pay him something out as a performer, even though he doesn't own those rights.

It won't be much.

SunnyShiner · 16/06/2022 21:39

I turn the radio off if Jackson comes on. Should be banned along with the other sickos.

LadyApplejack · 16/06/2022 21:44

I wouldn't say anything. Glitter is in prison where he belongs, the song is just a song, loads wouldn't even know him as the artist. Admittedly I love the song.

Random789 · 16/06/2022 21:45

I'd be completely fine with a Gary Glitter track in a spin class. Ideal kind of music for the job.

I'm so fed up with this anaemic pre-occupation with sanitising the range of people whose cultural products we are allowed to consume. Bad people sometimes make catchy songs. Such is life.

maddiemookins16mum · 16/06/2022 21:49

Oh I can beat this.
On holiday in Majorca about 15 years ago, the Spanish run afternoon kids club, they played ‘do you wanna be in my gang’ at the start so the kids knew it was time to meet at the pool bar for games.

KangarooKenny · 16/06/2022 21:53

Elvis dated 14 year old Priscilla.
22 year old Jerry Lee Lewis married his 13 year old cousin.
Bill Wyman dated, and then married, and under age girl.
But I bet people don’t turn their music off. I’m not a GG fan at all, but people should be consistent.

EarringsandLipstick · 16/06/2022 20:03

Where is Michael Jackson played?

Not on Irish radio stations anyway.

Irish stations do play MJ

Katya213 · 16/06/2022 22:13

I love mumsnet!

slashlover · 16/06/2022 22:25

Please someone tell me that I'm not the lone person who only knows the Dr Who version of this song?

hangrylady · 16/06/2022 22:26

Pieceofpurplesky · 16/06/2022 19:30

Gary Glitter makes you fitter ...

Totally inappropriate, however if the coach was young they may have no clue who he is?

🤣

XenoBitch · 16/06/2022 22:28

I have a relative who has a Gary Glitter track as the ring tone on her phone. She heard it when watching 'Joker' at the cinema.
