Gary Glitter track in a spin class

SleepyMc · 16/06/2022 19:27

Complete with choreographed claps and sprints.

YABU: Why not? It's just music.
YANBU: I'd rather not, thanks.

I always feel there’s a bit of a double standard with this. Gary Glitter / Lost Proffits are shunned (fair enough), but Michael Jackson is still played widely.

Personally I wouldn’t make a big fuss during the lesson, but maybe just have a quiet word with the instructor afterwards. They might be oblivious.

Michael Jackson wasn't convicted though

Jackson was found not guilty. The evidence against him was fairly weak. That's a pretty big difference.

It was his accusers that weren't believed, but the evidence against him was pretty strong imo. Especially when you google what some of the evidence was.

No, but like OJ Simpson, it's quite obvious he was guilty. Money and power gets people off. GG simply wasn't as A list as Jackson or Simpson. Or even Johnny Depp for that matter.

Alb0 · 16/06/2022 22:38

OP, YANBU and I would definitely have said something to the instructor, and said it in front of the rest of the class so they knew.

I have never actually heard of Gary Glitter until he was convicted, still have never heard any of his songs so don't know what he was like as a singer. But I do complain to radio stations etc whenever I hear a Michael Jackson song. I feel deeply uncomfortable with it and would if it happened in a class.

longtompot · 16/06/2022 22:43

I was shocked when my dd said a lot of GG songs are used and are trending on tiktok . She is 22 and had never heard of him but heard the song used in the Joker film.
I was walking my dog about a year ago and one of the neighbours down the road was playing his stuff really loud. I think that shocked me as I hadn't heard any of his stuff for years. I think it's the juxtaposition of how upbeat the songs are along with what he is

ManateeFair · 16/06/2022 22:44

Strongly suspect your instructor just knows the song from the Joker soundtrack and has no idea who Gary Glitter is. I wouldn’t play it myself in a million years, but if I’d been in the class I’d have winced at it, but nothing more than that.

CouldItBeCake · 16/06/2022 22:45

As long as it’s not a Michael Rosen poem, I say crack on love.

Don't mention the cake for gods sake

LetHimHaveIt · 16/06/2022 23:07

'22 year old Jerry Lee Lewis married his 13 year old cousin.'

Indeed. But I've yet to see anyone object to "Maverick"s Miles Teller currently banging out 'Great Balls of Fire' in cinemas nationwide.

Exactly my thoughts. The difference probably being that despite a huge amount of evidence against MJ, including previously paying off complainants, he was never convicted of the offences

nodiggetynodoubt · 16/06/2022 23:14

There is a handyman local to me called "Jim'll fix it". Has a logo of the name emblazoned on his van 😳 Boggles my brain every time I see him drive past.

No one could believe MJ was innocent. Have you seen the Netflix doc?

whynotwhatknot · 16/06/2022 23:53

i dont play glitter stuff but doesnt bother me if i hear it

it was in the joker recently so kids are just starting to hear it

Dfg15 · 17/06/2022 00:13

the Glitter Band did a version of it without GG, could it have been that one played in the gym?

Hairyfairy01 · 17/06/2022 00:15

I agree. But I am still shocked when MJ gets played on the radio and immediately switch it off.

Thesearmsofmine · 17/06/2022 00:27

I know the song but had no idea it was by GG. I only know GG for My gang really and i was in my teens when he was convicted.
I heard MJ on the radio the other day and it really stood out to me as I’d not heard one of his songs in such a long time and I listen to the radio all the time. It made me feel uncomfortable to hear it.

jcyclops · 17/06/2022 00:33

If Kevin Spacey is convicted, there are lots of great films that we will never see again!

Ponoka7 · 17/06/2022 00:34

The rolling stones passed underage groupies around with David Bowie and Chrissie Hyde defended it. It is about who brings in money for who.

Garry Glitter could be earning money from streaming and as the song writer. He just doesn't get royalties. Some of the Glitter band members do. I love the rock and roll track. I still listen to it when I'm cleaning and want high energy stuff. I'm on the fence with this one. But if we are going to ban GG, then Bowie, the Stones, Chrissie Hyde, Micheal Jackson and many many others need to be included.

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 17/06/2022 00:36

Is Doctorin' The Tardis still played or is that banned?

onlythreenow · 17/06/2022 01:06

I'm so fed up with this anaemic pre-occupation with sanitising the range of people whose cultural products we are allowed to consume. Bad people sometimes make catchy songs. Such is life.

Exactly. It's a song - GG is not going to benefit from it being played, and he doesn't even know that it is being played. A complete non-issue.

CouldItBeCake · 16/06/2022 22:45

I tip my hat to you. Well played.

PolishedCrown · 17/06/2022 01:33

I’d have stopped and said why. But then I also complained to my kids school with other parents when they decided to use a paedo Jackson song in the school play.

donquixotedelamancha · 17/06/2022 06:39

The jury did. I don't necessarily but I certainly think his guilt wasn't demonstrated at trial beyond a reasonable doubt. I haven't seen that documentary.

EllieFAnt82 · 17/06/2022 06:54

What is almost comical (though I agree with doing it) is that whenever an old Christmas music compilation is being played on a CD or whatever, when Glitter’s “Rock and Roll Christmas” comes in, there are always two or three people who jump up to quickly change the track.

And that’s the way it should be.

People who harm children should never be celebrated because “it’s a good song”.

EllieFAnt82 · 17/06/2022 06:57

As for Michael Jackson, he was found not guilty, is now dead so can’t defend himself, and given he was rather odd (given his own traumatic childhood) he was an easy target for false allegations by those wanting money. Benefit of the doubt there IMHO.
