To offer the workmen a calippo?

They’ve been digging up the road out the front for 2 days. Every time someone moves the dogs bark. I’m trying to work. (dogs barking through Teams meetings). DD is working nights so can’t sleep (Digging and barking).
but it’s hot and I’m eating one so feel a bit guilty. Would it be weird to offer them one?

my mum thinks i am weird as if i have a delivery of large furniture etc, i offer the loo and a drink
some of them have driven 150 miles and dragged crap up my stairs etc

Treaclex69 · 16/06/2022 14:36

Please do offer them as they'll be so grateful. I put drinks out for the bin men each week too but it's they come too early for ice lollys 😂

Simonjt · 16/06/2022 14:42

Go for it, my husband gave some workmen some chilled cans of pop earlier because he was worried about their welfare he fancies them.

SuziSecondLaw · 16/06/2022 14:46

Yeah, do it. I'm an antisocial moody cow, but even I would love to be offered a calipo on a hot day!

We have had scaffolders here although not today they said its too hot and they will be back Monday. Last week obviously i was offfering them a tea or coffee when they arrived but this week they have had cold drinks and an ice lollies. They have been very happy with me looking after them.

Immaterialatthispoint · 16/06/2022 14:50

Go for it :) I think it’s nice! I will often wave lollies or cold squash in the direction of workmen and women when it’s hot. My farrier loves me on the basis he gets hot chocolate, cold coke, cake and lollies depending on the weather!

worraliberty · 16/06/2022 14:51

It's never been a weird thing to do.

BingeBitch · 16/06/2022 14:53

I had the postman in for a cold drink today, he looked like he was going to pass out on the door step he was so boiled by the heat, poor sod. Must have looked a sight having the postman coming in and out, gives the neighbours something to talk about 🤣

Eggshausted · 16/06/2022 14:53

I always offer my postie an ice lolly and he is always very grateful!

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 16/06/2022 14:53

I mean, that's a nice thing to do - but why would you feel guilty? Confused

Kerrrmieee · 16/06/2022 14:54

We had a gas leak and workmen were outside late into the night, so I took out kit kats, monster munch and cans of pop. They were so happy!

Blowthemandown · 16/06/2022 14:56

I always offer tradespeople tea, coffee, and cold drinks if it’s hot and comfort break. Was brought up to do that. Especially in this heat. I would offer them ice poles or whatever too - they will be chuffed, worst case say no.

Wifflywafflywoo · 16/06/2022 14:56

We've had a lot of work done in our house and I always offer hot and cold drinks, biccies, snacks and if I'm getting one, a Gregg's or a McDonald's brekkie plus toilet and kitchen facilities. Up until recently the offer was always taken but I'm finding that the workmen we get now are just a totally different generation! I offered the young lads fitting the stair carpet a Gregg's breakfast and they lectured me on healthy eating, protein, keto and shredding (?!). They had come well equipped with shakes, bars and Tupperware. I ate my Gregg's buttie shamefully in the garden 😄

Irishfarmer · 16/06/2022 14:56

I know you said they've gone. But def not weird, out road was resurfaced about 4/5 years ago I dropped out a jug of squash a few times a day and lots of mr freezes. We live in the middle of no where so felt sorry they couldn't go anywhere. Also the 2 lads last summer installing the broadband I left out cans of orange/ coke. It's nice to be nice

itsthesoundofthepolice · 16/06/2022 15:00

@FoggySpecs I say kah-Lip-o my sister says kah-lee-po 🤷🏻‍♀️

I've got worked fixing my drive and I've just given them an ice pole after reading this. I'm now their fav customer

coffeecupsandfairylights · 16/06/2022 15:07

Aw, definitely offer them one if they return.

I'm a dog walker and have a LOVELY client who always leaves magnums in the freezer for me on hot days - it's hugely appreciated, believe me! DH also used to work in people's homes and loved the ones who offered him ice lollies or cold drinks in summer.

sasparilla1 · 16/06/2022 15:11

My dh is a roofer, he's hugely grateful for anything cool that he's offered on days like this.

murasaki · 16/06/2022 15:14

Going to have to get me a calippo now.

I have however learned not to eat one in teams meetings, as the pic of me in the corner made it look a.bit in appropriate...my colleagues were sniggering. A magnum is more decorous for those scenarios.

Peccary · 16/06/2022 15:16

We have a landscaper in the garden at the moment, he keeps refusing my offers of iced beverages. He looks so hot it's making me anxious. He's used to it I suppose

TheHaka · 16/06/2022 15:16

I’ve had to google to see what it was. I’m glad I did as it bought back a lovely memory for me. Years ago my mom offered a workman an ice cream, he’d never had one before & wasn’t sure what it was. It was fascinating watching him eat it. For ages after he’d pop in & see her if he was passing.

Lunarpsychobitch · 16/06/2022 15:18

I'd offer them one, it's nice to be nice :)

gingersplodgecat · 16/06/2022 15:22

Are you sure they haven't keeled over in the heat and fallen in the hole?

SarahSteedman82 · 16/06/2022 15:22

I did similar around 4 years ago and offered a builder working outside the neighbours house a can of ice cold come, 9 months layer I welcomed a perfect little surprise, I sadly never saw the builder again!

sunflowerandivy · 16/06/2022 15:25

Oh please. I was working as a paramedic in central London in a heatwave about 10 years ago and we were sitting in ambulance outside an address and some lovely person brought us some jubblys- they're sort of triangular ice pops. I still remember all these years later
