To ask why people like Dubai so much?

I know loads of people who now say it's their favourite holiday destination?

What's so lovely about it? Looks too hot to me? Can go above 45 weather wise!

I like the Canary Islands because the sun burns down but it has a cool breeze... a hidden gem if you hate sweltering heat

From pictures, it looks like a city like London that just has pools?

Yes carry on. Its hugely entertaining to read your intelligent, accurate and educated posts. 🤣 there are people behind keyboards, don't push it by being nasty or people will push back and take the piss out of you. And it's not hard to find material. Honey.

And you continue defending the persecution of gay people while spewing petty insults. You seem to enjoy it.

Oh it's you Ggg626262, hello. Out of curiosity, are you also the poster who was calling people poor on the world cup thread?

Runciblefork · 19/06/2022 18:09

No I don't call people poor. Any update about the knickers? How does it feel having skin contact with slavery and illegal homosexuality? You see, I don't buy cheap crap because I genuinely don't agree with sweat shops and child abuse. Anyway, I'm not getting my phone wet for the likes of you. See ya. Honey 😚😚😚

I'd worry about my own safety

this is a misguided fear. I feel a lot safer walking through Dubai at night than I do in the UK……. A LOT.

Yes, I'm sure you do but again, what happens when something goes wrong? When you do get assaulted by a taxi driver or a hotel worker lets himself into your room? I'm not naive enough to expect that the police anywhere would be particularly bothered, but at least in the UK, I'm unlikely to be punished for being sexually assaulted.

Dahlly · 19/06/2022 06:56

Yes, that’s partly because at 10pm at night there are small children at play parks with the nannies, people out grocery shopping and people heading to the gym.
The days are reconfigured because it’s so hot during the day. So nightlife doesn’t look the same as it does here.
As a woman I would be happy to to walk on my own to the shops late at night in Dubai, it’s not something that I have ever done and will ever do in the UK. I frequently saw women out for a jog, collecting shopping, returning from work on their own very late at night. It’s normal there. That’s why it feels safe. I’m not sure if it actually is but it’s such an eye opener to see women own their own space late at night, not having having to look over their shoulder.

But you can do that in lots of other places too. Lots of Spain is like that. I never feel threatened or scared walking around major Spanish cities at 10 or 11pm because everyone is out on the streets, children included.

I got raped in England and the police did fuck all. Fuck. All. Rape isn't just a Dubai thing. You have it too

The thing is, Ggg626262, no one is saying the UK is perfect. We can criticise the UK while also recognising that other countries have flaws.

Blaggertyjibbet · 19/06/2022 18:50

We went for a few days on the back of another trip because we were curious to see it. I wouldn’t go back. The excess was insane, especially juxtaposed against the way service people were treated. We felt a bit ‘ick’ by the end of our time. I can see why people like it—shopping, food, luxury, guaranteed sun—but it’s not somewhere we’ll return.

Absolutely agree about the police in UK. I rang 999 whilst someone was trying to get in my house the officer on the phone was fannying around asking for an email address!

Mean while I had a sleeping baby and a crazy man constantly trying to get inside my house.

I think what posters are saying if you go looking for fault of course you will easily find it!

Crikeyalmighty · 20/06/2022 14:55

@Runciblefork I'm a bit lost about the Sweden thing- !! Having just come back from living in Denmark (so we went to Sweden quite a lot) - I can't think of a less stinky place than Sweden- you can 'taste' the air!! I've not been anywhere that wasn't extremely clean, you describe it as boring- I'm not sure of your definition of boring- in Stockholm I enjoyed popping to some lovely walks, lakes, the Abba museum and the Vasa, pretty islands, good shopping , lovely meals and very nice hotels that yes had a touch of ikea about them-- but I'm ok with that. Lots of sun too but rarely hot. Dubai on the other hand- accommodation absolutely first rate, loved the desert trip - but on the whole quite a boring holiday unless you like a lot of time lying round pools or going to malls. It was expensive too- as expensive as Sweden. It's just horses for courses, if you like it great- but many others don't. I didn't like tons of rude Russians being rude to staff everywhere or very blingy Brits who thought they were the bees knees snapping their fingers and treating others like shit. Not something I've seen in Sweden

Mercurial123 · 20/06/2022 15:30

I was also confused by @Runciblefork opinion on Sweden. Stockholm is my favourite European city. So many amazing museums Vasa as mentioned above, Modern Art Museum to name a few. Incredibly clean, friendly people. Interesting accommodation if you want it. I stayed on a 19th century ship with my own sitting room overlooking the city. Gamla Stan, the old town is beautiful. There's no comparison. After two days in Dubai I'm ready to leave. I could keep myself occupied in Stockholm for weeks. As far as I remember Stockholm is a third city, a third parks and a third water.

Crikeyalmighty · 20/06/2022 15:41

@Mercurial123 it's one of my favourites too- that's why I was baffled about the sweden comments- I guess it depends what you call'boring' - some people I guess can only appreciate very obvious 'luxury' and hot weather. It's horses for courses --

Hornbostel · 20/06/2022 16:24

Basically according to her everywhere that isn't Dubai is a shithole, but we're the ones who are xenophobic and closed minded.

That's true. I love to walk around a city and Stockholm is perfect for that it's so interesting especially Gamla Stan it has so much history, even has a Viking rune stone. Forgot the Stockholm Archipelago islands definitely worth a visit and the overnight ferry to Tallin and easy access to the Baltic countries. Seriously who needs Dubai?

Crikeyalmighty · 20/06/2022 18:09

@Mercurial123 Yep I like a nice mix , interesting cities I love but I do like a bit of glamour too occasionally , for the money Dubai costs I would much rather have a few days in Marbella- more temperate weather, nice old town , nicer food and still has a very glam blingy harbour too

I agree balance is good. I've got a stop over in Dubai in September before travelling to Thailand. Two nights in Dubai is enough time not to get bored.

Crikeyalmighty · 20/06/2022 20:56

@mosesbassist Lol!! That's how I see it too- the only people I know who have gone to live there all had a touch of the fly by night.

sqirrelfriends · 20/06/2022 21:14

It’s a shithole.

tacky, built on slavery, awful human rights record, women are nothing and it’s too fucking hot.

I have never felt more like a piece of meat than I did there (not by choice).

Valeriekat · 21/06/2022 13:43

whiteroseredrose · 15/06/2022 20:45

No idea.

To me it's like Las Vegas. Fancy hotels and sand.

I hated both!

There is sand in Las Vegas?

LesGiselle · 21/06/2022 15:33

The comparisons with Las Vegas are true to an extent, but there is some really interesting stuff going on/around Vegas, music, art, hiking, food etc. The problem is that it's a big journey, so you're only likely to make it if you want the massive casinos and glitz, which I loathe.
