To ask why people like Dubai so much?

I know loads of people who now say it's their favourite holiday destination?

What's so lovely about it? Looks too hot to me? Can go above 45 weather wise!

I like the Canary Islands because the sun burns down but it has a cool breeze... a hidden gem if you hate sweltering heat

From pictures, it looks like a city like London that just has pools?

Women are second class citizens

I have never experienced this in my 10+ visits.

Certainly you might not, presumably because you have some kind of privilege ( wealth, race, education?) . When I visit my home country, India, I have a great time, but that is because I am educated and wealthy ( in comparison). I wouldn't claim though that Indian women are generally well treated.

I think perhaps it is possible to say that Dubai has a terrible human rights record while also not berating people who choose to visit or work there.

MordinVasNormandy · 16/06/2022 17:13

Are you saying that every single LGB person in Dubai is perfectly okay with the fact that homosexuality is illegal and they don't have the same legal rights are straight people?

heartchakra · 16/06/2022 17:16

I'll not put money into the coffers of countries who treat women as second class citizens .. so that's me out of that fan club

JanisMoplin · 16/06/2022 17:31

Out of interest @heartchakra which countries will you visit? I am not trying to be snarky. I just want to know. Mostly Europe?

KurriKawari · 16/06/2022 17:58

@heartchakra completely missed the conversations and what's happening to women in the UK...

Ah. Enlighten me. What's happening to women in the UK?

KurriKawari · 16/06/2022 19:48

I work on reducing Violence Against Women And Girls (VAWG) and if you don't know what's happening in the UK then you've been asleep.

I'm Talking about basic rights for women. Ok? I don't need ridiculous comments about violence against women. That's NOT the issue at hand. Get over yourself Mrs You Must Be Asleep. Bore off.

wtf? Confused

HRTQueen · 16/06/2022 20:58

Threads on Dubai always end up the same first posts oh it’s such a ghastly tacking place liked by a certain type, then it’s awful built on slavery and migrants treated terribly, then moves on to the poor women there have no rights often moves on to other countries where they poor women are so down trodden

it’s very narrow minded view that is very typical of MN

Baffling, isn't it?

HRTQueen · 16/06/2022 21:20

No it’s not baffling at all

it’s the world according to MN (or majority view)

LesGiselle · 16/06/2022 21:41

I need to work on my sarcasm. Which isn't something I thought I'd say.

JanisMoplin · 16/06/2022 21:43

It's tangential to the main subject, but I still can't think of many places other than the UK, Europe, Canada, Singapore, Australia and perhaps Malaysia ( to a degree) where women are not second class citizens. A poster up thread said she won't travel outside Europe and the UK which I respect, but strikes me as impractical for most.

HRTQueen · 16/06/2022 22:12

No I got it just making the point again ….

its so patronising and it’s insulting to call women you don’t know you have no idea about their lives second class citizens just because they live in a particular country

again such a narrow minded view so often expressed on MN

But it isn't 'women we don't know'. It's women in general. Including you and me.

HRTQueen · 16/06/2022 22:36

woman in my family are not second class citizens and would find it insulting western women telling them what they are 🙄they are educated, some are independent and have travelled

but continue to express such narrow minded views

I guess you think poor little Asian women get beaten by their husbands too and so subservient they dare not express their views

its so patronising and ignorant

I mean, they literally are.

Are you actually arguing that women in Muslim cultures are equal to men?

So is it not true that legally women need a male Guardians permission to marry or work? And have unequal rights when it comes to divorce and inheritance?

HRTQueen · 16/06/2022 23:07

do laws make people respectful of others

do you think because we have laws here that are not in place in other countries that fathers treat their daughters badly husbands treat them with no respect

and yes Muslim women do have rights to inheritance

you really think women don’t make choices for themselves and their husbands or fathers make all the decisions

good lord what ignorance

Are you saying that the fact men and women aren't equal under the law doesn't matter?

HRTQueen · 17/06/2022 08:08

What I am saying is the patronising idea of women from the ME and Asia being down trodden, having all their decisions made for them, not being able to make decisions, not being respected as equals being referred to as second class citizens

I have not said laws don’t matter I said that laws do not make people respect others more

do you need a law to tell you not to hit your partner or do you not hit them as you don’t feel you need to or want to harm them and respect them

Trouble is women do have to tow the line with their hisbands, fathers even brothers in the Gulf, Pakistan etc.

I remember one Pakistani colleague when I visited Dubai on business say proudly his wife had an MBA but she wasn't allowed to work and could only leave the house with a male chaperone.

Do some countries in the Gulf still require guardian's approval to travel work etc? If not that's only changed recently.

I know someone who wore Western dress and her husband didn't like it, he forced her to wear the abaya.
